Virginia Opossum - HD Mini-Documentary
Transcript: "The Virginia Opossum also known as the North American Opossum is the only marsupial in North America. Marsupials have pouches for carrying their young through early infancy. Baby opossums live in these pouches for 2-3 months and then ride on their mothers backs for an additional month or two. This is a huge portion of their life, considering that opossums have an average life span of only two years in the wild. Opossums are slow, solitary, nocturnal animals and prefer to be left alone. When threatened they will hiss and bear their teeth, but under extreme circumstances they will play dead. Playing Possum serves two purposes it discourages predators that only eat live prey and it convinces some larger animals that they are not a threat to their young. Virginia Opossums are the largest Opossums in the world. They are 15-20 inches long and weigh 9 to 13 lbs about the size of a domestic cat. They have clawless thumbs on their hind feet and hairless prehensile tails that can grab objects and help them to balance when they are climbing."

Brazilian Short Tailed Opossum Care
I've had many questions on how to care for these animals. This quick video explains some of the basics. Here is some repeated + more information. Brazilian Short Tailed Opossums: In nature STO's could be considered scavengers. They will eat a variety of things from fruits, veggies, nuts, and insects, to small rodents. They are small animals only reaching about 5" body length. Cage - STO's love to run around. Provide the largest cage possible. 1/4" or 1/2" bar spacing. Inside the cage you need a wheel, food dish, water bottle, and sleeping area/hide. Food - For their food dish which should be kept full at all times: Dog food, cat food, ferret food, sugar glider food, hedgehog food. "Treats" such as fruits, veggies, worms, chicken, or rodents should be fed 3 to 4 nights a week. *If you feed rodents - please only feed pinkie or fuzzy mice live. Adult mice pose a threat to your STO. My STO's have been raised on live foods. Lucy was born in my house, and she has eaten live rodents since she was 3 months old. She is a trained/experienced hunter. ***I am one of the few STO owners who feeds LIVE rodents! If you purchase a STO from a pet store or another breeder it is unlikely they have ever eaten a live rodent! This puts them at a MUCH GREATER risk of being bitten/hurt/killed by the mouse as they are un-experienced and may not know what to do! STO's as pets: STO's are wonderful pets! They can really connect/bond with their human. Some people even carry their STO's around with ...

Cross-Eyed Opossum Captures the Hearts of Germans
Heidi, the cross-eyed opossum, becomes Germany's newest star. Thousands of fans are already following the animal's Facebook page. She's middle-aged, grey-haired and stays up all night. Still, Heidi the cross-eyed opossum is Germany's biggest media sensation, and she has not even made her debut at the Leipzig Zoo. Heidi appears to be the next in a line of animal celebrities in Germany. The two-and-a-half-year-old opossum has grown popular on Facebook, pushing 82000 fans. She has sparked a popular song on YouTube and will soon star as a soft toy. Zoo officials believe that Heidi's crossed eyes could be the result of a poor diet when she was young, causing fat deposits to develop behind her eyes -- neither of which causes her pain or poses a health risk. [Stephan Kraa, Vet]: "There could be many reasons for this. In the majority of cases it is inherited and is caused by a lack of synchronization with the eye muscles of the opossum. It can also be as a result of fat deposits behind her eyes and as Heidi's sister also has squint eyes, it is probably a genetic problem with them." Poor vision is not much of a problem for Heidi. As a nocturnal animal, opossum's rely heavily on their sense of smell instead of their sight to get around. The public will not get their first glimpse of the opossum until July when the zoo opens its tropical wildlife exhibit. Demand for information about Heidi has been so high the zoo has dedicated a portion of its website to answering Heidi-related ...

Heidi the Cross-Eyed Opossum: Germany's latest love
An opossum in Germany has become a worldwide internet sensation. The cross-eyed 2 year old, named Heidi, is yet to make her debut at Leipzig zoo, but already she's attracted over 110000 Facebook fans. That's more than the German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Heidi's the latest in a line of much-loved creatures to be given celebrity status by the German media after Knut the orphan polar bear and Paul the psychic octopus. Baby opossum eating a grape
This little opossum is between three and four months old. She arrived as a very tiny, very late season orphan about two months ago and is too small to be released this year. She'll be overwintered and released in the spring. As you can see, opossum table manners include picking things up with your fingers and chewing with your mouth wide open.
