Mani Nasry an exceptionally talented filmmaker, actor and artist with a sophisticated breadth of education, skills, experience, and professional accomplishments. He trained as an actor and director in New York with Salem Ludwig and with Donna DeMatteo for playwriting. For Mani, the decision to work in the film industry guided his academic decisions from an early age. He attended a Toronto high school renowned for excellence in the arts, and was accepted into one of the highly competitive film program at Ryerson university. It is notable that he went to Ryerson with an already well-established career in theatre, film, television and commercial work, and a range of multi-faceted achievements including producing, cinematography, casting, writing, directing, acting, and editing. On his own he added stints in New York and Los Angeles with leading acting teachers, as well as learning the grace and style of many forms of dance and athletics. With courses perceptively, he has also recognized the importance of acquiring an understanding of the business side of the industry, and the varied aspects of technology and production. There are some people clearly born to follow the path they have chosen from the start. Mani Nasry has the passion to succeed, the curiosity and ingenuity required to lead and collaborate in an industry known for its impact and appeal, and the strength of character and work ethic to immerse himself in finding and telling an unforgettable story.

Well I'm going to a spot where I think I may be able to get archaic voices on the Electronic Voice Apparatus, which I've got with me. And it's an experiment, we'll see how it goes. It'll be interesting if it happens.
NARRATOR:
ALEC IS AN INTERNATIONAL DESIGNER OF VOICE COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS. HE DEVELOPED SPEECH ENHANCERS FOR NASA'S SPACE SHUTTLE ASTRONAUTS, AND WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR RADIO LINKS FOR LONDON'S UNDERGROUND TRAINS. IT WAS TWENTY YEARS AGO THAT ALEC READ ABOUT THE ELECTRONIC VOICE PHENOMENA, KNOWN AS EVP.
Alec McRae:
I sort came across of EVP by accident, and I rejected I totally at first when I read about it. It was something about tape recording the voices of people where they had died. I knew that was nonsense and that couldn't be done, so I slung that back on the shelf. A couple of weeks later I found there were people prominent in the electronics industry involved, and I thought, if it was good enough for them, I'd take a look at it as well.

It is like a radio transmitter, which one controls by placing one's hands on those plates here, and this modifies the radio signal, which is picked up by the radio here, and which is converted into sound of course within the radio, that is recorded on the tape recorder. Then when we listen back to that, we find that sometimes you will get a voice sound on there.

NARRATOR:
WHEN ALEC LISTENED TO HIS VERY FIRST RECORDING HE WAS CONVINCED HE COULD HEAR THE VOICE OF A DEAD MAN.
EVP Voice:
Karl Johnson.
Alec in front of computer.
Alec McRae:
That was the first EVP voice that I ever recorded; what it seemed to me to be saying in a very strange, sick, kinda voice was: Karl Johnson, Karl die here. It tails off at the end, as though somebody really was on their last legs.

They are definitely speech forms and not static. It had quite an impact, really, it was quite convincing.

Alec at father's graveside
Alec McRae:
This is the grave of my father. He died on fifth January 1982. It spurred on my interest in EVP because here was a person who I had known who was gone, all that life was gone, and it made one think, what is it about, and we don't know, so EVP is a way of finding out a bit more.

BUT AFTER 20 YEARS OF LISTENING, ALEC HAS HEARD NOTHING BUT THE VOICES OF STRANGERS.

Celebrating the legacy of Lady Bird Johnson
Devoted wife of the 36th president, environmentalist and revered first lady, the woman who became known as Lady Bird Johnson walked the crowded corridors of power with grace and uncommon courage. Her warmth, graciousness and Southern courtesy helped her beloved husband, Lyndon Baines Johnson, negotiate a difficult path as president after John F. Kennedy’s assassination in 1963.
Celebrating Lady Bird Centennial 1912-2012
She would say later that her joy and her solace came from her connection to nature, and that her life’s work sprang from a hope that future generations could experience nature’s beauty as she had.
Her legacy to us is wildflowers and wilderness. She lives on in Texas bluebonnets and native plants along the nation’s roadsides, urban parks and trails – and an unprecedented portfolio of legislation devoted to clean air, clean water and the conservation of our magnificent natural heritage. As Lady Bird Johnson noted in 1967, “The environment is where we all meet; where all have a mutual interest; it is the one thing all of us share. It is not only a mirror of ourselves, but a focusing lens on what we can become.”
In honor of Mrs. Johnson’s 100th birthday, centennial celebrations have been planned throughout the year.
From March 17 to May 28, “A Bouquet for Mrs. J,” an outdoor sculpture exhibit of giant metal wildflowers by Logan Stollenwerck will be on display in the gardens at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center.
Stollenwerck created this exhibit in loving tribute to Lady Bird Johnson to commemorate what would have been her 100th birthday year.

First Lady Michelle Obama's "100,000 Strong" China Study Abroad Initiative Event
Transcript from
First Lady Michelle Obama’s Event
at Howard University
Washington, D.C.
January 19, 2011
SIDNEY A. RIBEAU, President, Howard University: Our University takes pride in our historic preparation of students for involvement in the world community. Today we’re building on more than 142 years of commitment to our international connections and working vigorously to ensure that we expand our international footprint so that every, I say, every Howard student has an international experience. [applause & cheering] Let’s hear it for that.
This is one of our institutional priorities and one that we will fulfill. Many of our students have traveled or are studying abroad through programs sponsored by their units and departments. In addition, our Ralph J. Bunche International Affairs Center remains the hub for a variety of academic and public affairs programs.
I am happy to report that last year, 17 of our Howard MBA students spent two weeks studying in China as a part of their global business environment course. This is only one of several programs connecting our student and faculty to their Chinese counterparts.
We want to build on these successes. We are delighted therefore that we are joined today by the Ambassador Chen, the wife of the People’s Republic of China Ambassador to the United States. We at Howard are happy that we can play a small part in helping the President and First Lady host China for this state visit. Ladies and gentlemen please give a warm Howard University welcome to Ambassador Chen [applause & cheering]
CHEN NAIQING, Wife of Chinese Ambassador to the United States: Thank you. Thank you very much. Honorable Michelle Obama, the First Lady. Mr. President Sidney Ribeau, Assistant Secretary Ann Stock, ladies and gentlemen, friends, it’s my great honor to join the first lady and others in today’s panel discussion.
Let me first extend my sincere thanks to the First Lady and Howard University for hosting this important event during President Hu Jintao’s state visit to the United States. It highlights the gratifying progress we have achieved in the cultural and people to people contact between our two nations. It also shows and reassures all of us that the torch of friendship is in good hands and will be handed down to younger generations like you. [applause]
The educational exchanges between China and the United States have a long history. In 1854 the first Chinese student came to Yale University to study. Subsequently quite a large number of Chinese youth followed his footsteps. They later returned to China and became the pioneers and trailblazers in their respective field of studies.
As early as in 1870 Harvard University opened the Chinese course and has since produced many prominent scholars on China studies.
In October 1978, the two countries signed, MOU, on educational exchanges, just before the establishment of formal diplomatic relations.
In December the same year as a result, the first group of 52 Chinese students arrived in Washington, D.C. and educational exchanges began to flourish.
Since then, educational exchanges have grown and made some really remarkable progress.
In 1989, China for the first time became the number one source of foreign students in the United States and has stayed within the top two ever since. In 2010 there will be in total some 127,000 Chinese students in the United States. And the number of American students in China has also been increasing very rapidly. It reached almost 20,000 in 2009. The second largest in foreign students in China. At present we face some great opportunities to bring our educational collaboration to greater depth.
When President Obama visited China in November 2009, he announced the initiative that the United States will send 100,000 students to China in the following four years.
This initiative has been written into the joint statement. In May 2010 the first meeting of China, US high level consultation mechanism for people to people exchanges was held in Beijing.
The two sides launched a series of educational programs.
For example China will send 10,000 students here for doctorate studies in the next four years. And about 10,000 American students will go to China for training courses under the Chinese Bridge program. We look forward to working closely with the United States to make sure that these programs are implemented smoothly as expected and bring our educational exchanges to a higher level. [applause]
Ladies and gentlemen to take forward the 21st Century China - US partnership that features mutual respect and mutual benefit would not be possible without the involvement and support from our people, particularly the young people. I sincerely hope that your experience of studying or working in China will stay with you long after you return home. And you will continue to reach out to China as much as you can. And engage in efforts and deeper understanding and friendship between

Redwood Creek, Lady Bird Johnson Grove, 3D
Old-growth redwood forest, Lady Bird Johnson Grove in 3D. Coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) trees grow in the fog belt of coastal northern California. These clips accompany a video of a bicycle ride from the Redwood Creek trail-head (elevation 50 feet) to the Redwood Creek overlook (2100 feet): youtu.be The Lady Bird Johnson grove is 3 miles from US Highway 101, so one of a few quiet, old-growth, coast redwood groves. The Bald Hills Road intersects Highway 101 a mile north of Orick, California. The view from the overlook is beautiful, this day obscured by fog.
