Santa made his way along North Flatbush Avenue. Santa kicked off the holiday shopping season!
Santa loved that we kept the temps at 55 degrees for him!
The start of the holiday shopping season on Flatbush Avenue got a headstart when Santa made his annual visit to our neighborhood. He and his elf visited with all the children of the Prospect Heights and Park Slope neighborhood, handed out over 300 candy canes, parents received our handy Holiday Merchant Discount Booklet and our shopping and services guide. If you did not receive a guide, you can still find one in any one of our merchants stores along North Flatbush. This is the last of the 2010-2011 guides. In just a few short weeks, the new Shopping Guide for 2012-2013 will be published and out on the streets. View our Santa Video on our website!
Unitl next year, we bid adeau to Santa as he promises to make his venture to North Flatbush Avenue in 2012! |
15 new baby pear trees were planted along North Flatbush Avenue. NEW TREES ALONG FLATBUSH AVENUE
Take a walk along Flatbush Avenue and you will notice new tree plantings. An initative between the North Flatbush Avenue BID and NYC Dept. of Parks & Recreation Urban Forestry, approx. 15 new pear trees were planted along our district.
We like trees around us because they make life more pleasant. Most of us respond to the presence of trees beyond simply observing their beauty. We feel serene, peaceful, restful, and tranquil with more trees around us.
The North Flatbush Avcenue BID urges our merchants and/or property owners to care for any trees that are outside or near their property. Keep your tree watered on hot days, remove trash from the surrounding area and weed when necessary. We also ask that you notify the BID office when a bicycle is chained to any of our newly planted street trees. The growth and longevity of our new trees relies on your care.
The BID is working this fiscal year for additional capital funding for new tree guards surrounding the district. Let's keep o ur fingers crossed. |
New Traffic Light gets installed at Carlton and Park Place
working with the community
The North Flatbush Avenue BID works with the surrounding community groups and civic groups. We listened to complaints of speeding dollar vans and cars through the Carlton Avenue intersection and pedestrians not able to cross from the surrounding subways. Working with DOT and the Carlton Avenue Block Assoc. we were able to quickly install a new traffic light, remove the old Stop sign and enhance the crosswalks. The BID will be installing new curb outs soon that will make crossing the streets less hazardous by shortening the length of crossing. All these new additions to our busy intersection, has increased pedestrian safety and traffic calming.
The BID continues to work with the Dept. of Transportation to provide our district with additional 'bump outs" or curb outs, at many of our busy crosswalks along Flatbush Avenue to provide pedestrian safety along our district. We hope to start construction on these new initiatives by next spring. The new curbouts can be viewed on our website. |
The bottom 10% of the banner will be highlighted with our merchants name or logo. New Banners for 2012
and the winner is......
Tia Johnson, formally of Park Slope. Tia was a long time resident of Park Slope where she married, and raised her 3 children . Tia also studied at Pratt Instititue and graduated with a degree in graphic design. Tia is now a resident on Staten ISland where she enjoys being with her grandchildren, and working freelance with her comapany Bigup Design.
The BID submitted a widely published RFP to graphic artiststs at local schools, local newspapers, through Cragislist, and on our FB and website pages.
The submissions were coming in everyday from all over the country, and we were able to narrow them down to 3. At our Dec. 8th Board of Directors meeting, the decision was unanimously decided on this banner to hang on our 30 lamp posts that delineate our district. The board's decision was based on color, design and originality!
All 30 banners will be sponsored by some of our merchants that are within our district. Any merchant looking to sponsor a banner for 2013, can call or email our office and reserve a banner that can be hung as close to their business as possible. This is a great way to advertise your business that is seen by thousands of pedestrians and car passengers.
And if you would like to participate in our next banner contest, keep checking our website around September or October of 2012 where we will post the RFP. |
