Charles Gounod - Funeral March of a Marionette
Charles Gounod (1818-1893) The "Funeral March of a Marionette," slight as it is, has never lost its charm. It was originally written as one of the movements of a Suite Burlesque, which was never completed. BBC Philharmonic conducted by Yan Pascal Tortelier The music in the beginning is supposed to tell the listener that two of the members of the Marionette troupe have had a duel and one of them has been killed. A party of pallbearers is organized and the procession sets out for the cemetery in march time. The music soon takes on a more cheerful spirit, for some of the troupe, wearied with the march, seek consolation at a wayside inn, where they refresh themselves and also descant upon the many virtues of their late companion. At last they get into place again and the procession enters the cemetery to the march rhythm -- the whole closing with the bars intended to reflect upon the briefness and weariness of life, even for marionettes. Alfred Hitchcock Presents is well known for its title sequence. The camera fades in on a simple line-drawing caricature of Hitchcock's rotund profile. As the program's theme music, Charles Gounod's Funeral March of a Marionette, plays, Hitchcock himself appears in silhouette from the right edge of the screen, and then walks to center screen to eclipse the caricature. He then almost always says "Good evening."

Charles Gounod - Symphony No. 2 in E Flat (1855)
Symphony No. 2 by Charles Gounod. Conducted by Patrick Gallois with the Sinfonia Finlandia Jyvaskyla. I. Adagio - Allegro Agitato - 00:00 II. Larghetto - Non Troppo - 12:30 III. Scherzo - Allegro Molto - 21:52 IV. Finale - Allegro - Leggiero Assai - 29:22 The Symphony in E flat major starts with an Adagio introduction, followed by a cheerful sonata-form Allegro agitato, the classical form presented with French clarity and precision. There is something initially ominous about the central development before the themes of the exposition emerge, to be heard in fuller form in the final recapitulation. The hymn-like B flat major Larghetto slowly unfolds, leading to a central passage of jauntier, dotted rhythms, after which the first theme returns, with an accompanying first violin counterpoint, later taken up by violas and cellos, as the violins take charge of the melody. There is something of Beethoven about the G minor Scherzo, and the contrasting G major Trio duly finds a place for woodwind instruments. There is a light-opera elegance about the Finale, with its delicate first subject entrusted to the first violins and the second to the woodwind. The traditional form leads to a triumphantly emphatic conclusion.

Charles Gounod - Symphony No. 1 in D Major (1855)
Symphony No. 1 by Charles Gounod. Conducted by Patrick Gallois with the Sinfonia Finlandia Jyvaskyla. I. Allegro Molto - 00:00 II. Allegretto Moderato - 5:58 III. Scherzo - Non Troppo Presto - 12:03 IV. Finale - Adagio - Allegro Vivace - 19:48 The French composer Charles Gounod stemmed from a formidable cultural family tradition going back to the seventeenth century. His father François-Louis, who died when his son was five, was a painter, a friend of Ingres, and had won the second Prix de Rome in 1783. His mother, to whom he owed his early musical training, was a pianist, a pupil of Louis Adam, father of the composer Adolphe Adam. Born in Paris in 1818, Gounod had his schooling at the Lycée Saint-Louis, taking lessons in harmony and counterpoint from Anton Reicha. In 1836 he entered the Conservatoire, studying counterpoint with Halévy, composition first with Berton and then with Le Sueur and finally with Paer, and taking piano lessons with Zimmermann, whose daughter he later married. His early ability is witnessed by the fact that he won the second Prix de Rome in 1837 with the cantata Marie Stuart et Rizzio. He failed to win a prize in 1838, but the following year took the first Prix de Rome with his cantata Fernand. Gounod's skill as a composer is seen particularly in his two symphonies, written in 1855. The first of these, the Symphony in D major, shows a masterly treatment of traditional form and deft handling of instrumentation. The exposition of the first movement ...

Charles Gounod: Ave Maria (piano solo)
It's me playing my Yamaha P140 digital piano again, but there's no usual video this time. It was too hot outside to bake myself under the offhand lighting system. Listen to my rendetion of famous Gounod's Ave Maria. Actually Gounod copied JS Bach's prelludium, added text and solo melody. But it's nice and really well-known piece. Besure to choose high quality link under video (if available) to hear much better stereo sound. I optimized this video for the best possible sound, picture quality wasn't important. If you want only to listen, I recommend Deezer playlist with most of my music in good MP3 audio quality: www.deezer.com You can also download all music tracks in MP3 from SkyDrive: cid-40ecf9ec99af041e.skydrive.live.com

AVE MARIA (Bach/Gounod) -- Anna Moffo: Dazzling!
This exquisite rendition of the technically challenging Gounod "Ave Maria" is simply the best. Anna Moffo, justly known as 'La Splendissima,' was never better! It took years of searching to find this recording. Having heard scores of other versions (while searching for this one), I can state that this is simply the best.

Hidden treasures - Charles Gounod - Messe solennelle de Sainte Cécile (1855) - "Domine Deus"
Painting: "Noah's descent from Mount Ararat" by Ivan Aivazovsky. History (based on materials from allmusic.com and Grove Dictionary of Music): After its premiere on 18 October 1854, Gounod's "La nonne sanglante" received little support from a new Opera directorship intent upon turning a page in the destiny of that institution. The failure earned the composer a personal rebuke from the librettist, Scribe, Gounod, however, remained undaunted and as prolific as ever, consoling himself by writing in rapid succession with two symphonies, six melodies and the important "Messe solennelle de Sainte Cecile". Although Gounod is today better known for his operas, his contemporary, Camille Saint-Saens, once contended that "when the operas of Gounod are forever in repose in dusty libraries, "Messe de Sainte Cecile", "Redemption" and "Mors et Vita" will still retain life". This ultimately faulty analysis was actually not completely without logic, considering the fact that Gounod's works for the church far outnumber his operas. Indeed, given his earliest predilections (he undertook a course in theology at Saint-Sulpice and referred to himself for a time as "Abbé Gounod"), he might easily have confined himself to the composition of sacred works. Gounod approached the writing of the new Mass with the same reverence that had informed his creative life from the beginning. The triumphant premiere took place at the church of Saint-Eustache on the 22nd of November, 1855, and led Saint-Saans to ...

Jessye Norman - O Divine Redeemer (Charles Gounod)
Ah! Turn me not away, Receive me tho' unworthy; Hear Thou my cry, Behold, Lord, my distress! Answer me from thy throne Haste Thee, Lord to mine aid, Thy pity shew in my deep anguish! Let not the sword of vengeance smite me, Though righteous thine anger, O Lord! Shield me in danger, O regard me! On Thee, Lord, alone will I call. O Divine Redeemer! I pray Thee, grant me pardon, and remember not, remember not my sins! Forgive me, O Divine Redeemer! Night gathers round my soul; Fearful, I cry to Thee; Come to mine aid, O Lord! Haste Thee, Lord, haste to help me! Hear my cry! Save me Lord in Thy mercy; Come and save me O Lord Save, in the day of retribution, From Death shield Thou me, O my God! O Divine Redeemer, have mercy! Help me, my Saviour!

Charles Gounod - Faust (1859) - Ballad for Marguerite - "Il etait un roi" (Victoria de los Angeles)
Just as a point of interest, I'm also presenting the version of the King of Thule ballad that was composed by Gounod for his own version of the play, albeit a full operatic work, unlike Schubert's unrelated settings of various scenes. Though the basic idiom is preserved, Gounod, unlike Schubert or, indeed, Goethe, treats the piece slightly more lightheartedly (though in no way is his piece inferior to the already posted German Lied). Indeed, the melody is less sombre and, moreover, one can feel that Marguerite, in contrast to Schubert's Gretchen, is less preoccupied with the narrative of the song itself which serves as a background for her pensive meditation on the identity of the man she just met, in fact, the title hero himself. This notion is further reinforced by several breaks in the melodic development, as the young woman is reminded, for example, of "the blushing of my cheeks, when we spoke", which provide a more realistic context for the song's appearance. The melody, again in contrast to Schubert's rendition, more life-affirming, despite the slightly morbid theme (however, Gounod's librettist cuts an important symbolic gesture that appeared in the original: the mirror reflection of the cup's sinking and the King's passing, thus, the ballad is much less important dramatically, though less disturbing on its' entrance); the orchestral opening to each couplet, in particular, has a strange buffo element to it that does not, however, detract from the enjoyment. A ...
