Herbicide-resistant Weeds Threaten Soil Conservation Gains: Finding a Balance...
Herbicides were developed during the twentieth century to be used with conventional tillage for weed control. Conservation (or minimum) tillage subsequently evolved, which enabled less soil damage when used with herbicides. Selection pressure, however, has resulted in weed species that have made adaptations for survival in conjunction with tillage. The US government has put several federal policies and programs in place that help determine the selection and implementation of crops and conservation programs in relation to herbicides and tillage. This Issue Paper examines the impact of certain weed management practices on soil conservation objectives and addresses ways to mitigate negative effects. Chair: David R. Shaw, Office of Research and Economic Development, Mississippi State University, Mississippi State. IP49, February 2012, 16 pp. FREE. Available online and in print (fee for shipping/handling).

2,4-D Herbicide: "Death to Weeds" 1947 Dow Chemical
more at quickfound.net "Shows new herbicides incorporating 2,4-D." Public domain film from the Library of Congress Prelinger Archive, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and 1-pass exposure & color correction applied (cannot be ideal in all scenes). The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and/or equalization (the resulting sound, though not perfect, is far less noisy than the original). en.wikipedia.org 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (usually referred to by its abbreviation, 2,4-D) is a common systemic pesticide/herbicide used in the control of broadleaf weeds. It is one of the most widely used herbicides in the world, and the third most commonly used in North America. 2,4-D is a synthetic auxin (plant hormone), and as such it is often used in laboratories for plant research and as a supplement in plant cell culture media such as MS medium. It was a major ingredient in Agent Orange alongside its chemically similar relative, 2,4,5-T (2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid). History 2,4-D was developed during World War II by a British team at Rothamsted Experimental Station, under the leadership of Judah Hirsch Quastel, aiming to increase crop yields for a nation at war. When it was commercially released in 1946, it became the first successful selective herbicide and allowed for greatly enhanced weed control in wheat, maize (corn), rice, and similar cereal grass crops, because it only ...

New Herbicides in Fireweed Management
Dr. James Leary, CTAHR Invasive Weed Specialist, conducts new field trials on windy Waimea ranchland, Hawaii Island, targeting fireweed (Senecio madagascariensis). He demonstrates a modified spray system for high wind conditions. Herbicides tested were: 2,4-D® (active ingredient: 2,4-Dichlorophenol), Cimarron® Plus (active ingredient: metsulfuron methyl and chlorsulfuron), and Milestone® VM (active ingredient: aminopyralid). Preliminary results are shown 30 days later. Partial funding provided by the USDA via the RREA and TSTAR programs.

Precision Application of Foam Herbicide to Canada Thistle.wmv
This video demonstrates the precision foam herbicide system from Green Shoots. The system creates a foam herbicide that sticks well to plant surfaces. As shown in the video, it works great with the herbicide wiping technique commonly used for foliar applications (ie, ones to green leaves and stems). The system is available for purchase at greenshootsonline.com Why use the precision foam herbicide system from Green Shoots to control invasive weeds like Canada thistle? Use of the Green Shoots foam herbicide system can help you: protect non-target, desirable plants from off-target spray and herbicide drift; save money by cutting back on the amount of herbicide used; and reduce the amount of herbicide introduced into the environment. Background on the Herbicide Glyphosate If you use any herbicide, you must read and follow the label provided with it. The herbicide used in this video contains the active ingredient glyphosate. The United States Environmental Protection Agency has commented on glyphosate's "low acute toxicity" and the absence of other toxicological concerns (ie, carcinogenicity)." It also determined in it's last reregistration decision for glyphosate that "the effects of glyphosate on birds, mammals, fish and invertebrates are minimal." See EPA, Reregistration Eligibility Decision (RED): Glyphosate, February 16, 1994. www.epa.gov/espp/litstatus/effects/glyphosate-red.pdf Background on Canada Thistle Canada thistle (Cirsium arvense) an invasive thistle in North ...
