Austrian composer Georg Friedrich Haas is fast becoming one of the leading composers of his generation. Morgen und Abend (Morning and Evening) marks his first commission from The Royal Opera. Award-winning Norwegian author, poet and playwright Jon Fosse provides the libretto – an adaptation of his acclaimed 2000 novel of the same name, which describes with meditative, near incantatory simplicity the life of a fisherman from birth to death. This world premiere is directed by Graham Vick, Artistic Director of Birmingham Opera Company and former Director of Productions with Scottish Opera and Glyndebourne Festival Opera.
Haas shot to international fame with in vain (2000), described by Simon Rattle as ‘an astonishing work of art and an acknowledged masterpiece of the 21st century’. Common to all of his works is an intense and highly charged atmosphere, constructed from shifting sound worlds that coalesce suddenly into opulent richness. Haas’s latest works have continued his experimentation with sound and the interplay of light and dark, in works such as ins Licht (2007) and ATTHIS (2009, heard in the Linbury Studio Theatre spring 2015).

Stiffelio non smette mai di destare scandalo, oggi come alla sua prima messa in scena, nel 1850. Già all'epoca, Verdi dovette riadattare l'opera in chiave medievale per sfuggire alle critiche dovute ai contenuti 'peccaminosi'. Il protagonista, un pastore protestante tradito dalla moglie, affronta un doloroso percorso di perdono e riconciliazione, diviso tra la sua matrice religiosa ed umana.
Anche in questo caso l'evento, accolto dal Teatro Farnese, ha generato contestazioni e perplessità: Parma ha accolto con riserve questa nuova forma di mise-en-scèn che vuole il coinvolgimento diretto degli spettatori, in piedi per l'intera durata dello spettacolo così da muoversi sulla scena ed entrare in contatto diretto con gli artisti. Già dalla première di lunedì 25 settembre, riservata agli under 30, il regista Graham Vick è riuscito a riscattarsi e proprio il coinvolgimento dello spettatore si è rivelato del suo successo.

Graham Vick
Graham Vick CBE (born 30 December 1953 in Birkenhead) is an English opera director known for his experimental and revisionist stagings of traditional and modern operas. He has worked in many of the world's leading opera houses and is currently artistic director of Birmingham Opera Company.
Life and career
Vick studied at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. At age 24, he directed a production of Gustav Holst's Savitri for Scottish Opera, and became the company's director of productions in 1984. From 1994 to 2000, Vick was director of productions at Glyndebourne Opera.
In 1987, he founded the Birmingham Opera Company and remains its artistic director. Vick's productions with Birmingham Opera include the first UK production of Othello to feature a black tenor in the title role in 2009, and the 2012 world premiere of Karlheinz Stockhausen's notoriously difficult Mittwoch aus Licht.
Vick was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2009 Birthday Honours.

Stiffelio non smette mai di destare scandalo, oggi come alla sua prima messa in scena, nel 1850. Già all'epoca, Verdi dovette riadattare l'opera in chiave medievale per sfuggire alle critiche dovute ai contenuti 'peccaminosi'. Il protagonista, un pastore protestante tradito dalla moglie, affronta un doloroso percorso di perdono e riconciliazione, diviso tra la sua matrice religiosa ed umana.
Anche in questo caso l'evento, accolto dal Teatro Farnese, ha generato contestazioni e perplessità: Parma ha accolto con riserve questa nuova forma di mise-en-scèn che vuole il coinvolgimento diretto degli spettatori, in piedi per l'intera durata dello spettacolo così da muoversi sulla scena ed entrare in contatto diretto con gli artisti. Già dalla première di lunedì 25 settembre, riservata agli under 30, il regista Graham Vick è riuscito a riscattarsi e proprio il coinvolgimento dello spettatore si è rivelato del suo successo.

Austrian composer Georg Friedrich Haas is fast becoming one of the leading composers of his generation. Morgen und Abend (Morning and Evening) marks his first commission from The Royal Opera. Award-winning Norwegian author, poet and playwright Jon Fosse provides the libretto – an adaptation of his acclaimed 2000 novel of the same name, which describes with meditative, near incantatory simplicity the life of a fisherman from birth to death. This world premiere is directed by Graham Vick, Artistic Director of Birmingham Opera Company and former Director of Productions with Scottish Opera and Glyndebourne Festival Opera.
Haas shot to international fame with in vain (2000), described by Simon Rattle as ‘an astonishing work of art and an acknowledged masterpiece of the 21st century’. Common to all of his works is an intense and highly charged atmosphere, constructed from shifting sound worlds that coalesce suddenly into opulent richness. Haas’s latest works have continued his experimentation with sound and the interplay of light and dark, in works such as ins Licht (2007) and ATTHIS (2009, heard in the Linbury Studio Theatre spring 2015).

Graham Vick
Graham Vick CBE (born 30 December 1953 in Birkenhead) is an English opera director known for his experimental and revisionist stagings of traditional and modern operas. He has worked in many of the world's leading opera houses and is currently artistic director of Birmingham Opera Company.
Life and career
Vick studied at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. At age 24, he directed a production of Gustav Holst's Savitri for Scottish Opera, and became the company's director of productions in 1984. From 1994 to 2000, Vick was director of productions at Glyndebourne Opera.
In 1987, he founded the Birmingham Opera Company and remains its artistic director. Vick's productions with Birmingham Opera include the first UK production of Othello to feature a black tenor in the title role in 2009, and the 2012 world premiere of Karlheinz Stockhausen's notoriously difficult Mittwoch aus Licht.
Vick was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2009 Birthday Honours.
