Secularism v Religion in national affairs - post-Warsi discussion on BBC Newsnight 14/2/12
participants: Prof Richard Dawkins Bishop Michael Nazir-Ali Ruth Gledhill, Religious Affairs Editor, The Times Newsnight anchor: Gavin Esler This discussion results from recent articles in national newspapers by Sayeeda Warsi, the co-chairman of the UK Conservative Party, and a tax-payer-funded visit by her to the Vatican. I suspect Warsi, a Muslim, is using her position to further her personal agenda, viz to promote religion in national affairs, including government policy. She trended all day on twitter (London), with the overwhelming majority of tweeters expressing very strong opposition to her views. She might just find that her strategy backfires.

Please subscribe. During filming, if a powerpoint slide is just a reiteration of what the speaker is saying, without any new information, I do not cut to it. If you are screaming, "What the fuck is on the projector!"... This is the answer. All Skepticon videos will be monetized this year with ads. 100% of the proceeds with be used to purchase micro-loans through Kiva.org. I know the ads are annoying, but there is no reason to not use the money for a good cause.

Atheists, Secularism Are The Enemy - Rick Perry
"...Rick Perry, who is still Governor of the State of Texas for reasons that modern science cannot explain, would still like to be Commander in Chief of something, even if it's not the United States. In a teleconference with wingnut pastor Rick Scarborough, Perry called on "Christian warriors" to engage in "spiritual warfare" against that most Satanic of foes, the Constitution of the United States. Of course, Perry claims to like the Constitution a whole bunch; he thinks the real enemy is a "growing tide of secularism and atheism" that has spread the false notion that the establishment clause of that document somehow mandates "separation of church and state." Clear enough?...".* Cenk Uygur, comedian Jimmy Dore, and Michael Shure (host of TwenTYTwelve) discuss on The Young Turks. *Read more here from DOKTOR ZOOM via Wonkette: wonkette.com Atheist Q & A: www.youtube.com Support The Young Turks by Subscribing bit.ly Like Us on Facebook: www.fb.com Follow Us on Twitter: bit.ly Buy TYT Merch: theyoungturks.spreadshirt.com Find out how to watch The Young Turks on Current by clicking here: www.current.com

The History of American Secularism - Charles Taylor
Complete video at: fora.tv Charles Taylor discusses the history of the first amendment and America's separation of church and state. He discusses the dichotomy between secularism and religiousness and how it has changed over the centuries. ----- Charles Taylor, Professor Emeritus of Philosophy, McGill University treats the term "secular" with several different meanings which, for a variety of reasons can't be simply ironed out and reduced to one, hence the inevitability of confusions and cross-purposes. - The New School Charles Margrave Taylor, CC, GOQ, BA, MA, Ph.D, FRSC (born November 5, 1931) is a Canadian philosopher who has made significant contributions to political philosophy, philosophy of social science, and the history of philosophy. He is often classified as a communitarian, though he is uncomfortable with the label. He is a practicing Roman Catholic. Taylor was educated at the McGill University (BA in History in 1952) and at Balliol College, Oxford (BA in Philosophy, Politics and Economics in 1955, MA in 1960, D.Phil in 1961), where he studied under Isaiah Berlin and GEM Anscombe. He succeeded John Plamenatz as Chichele Professor of Social and Political Theory in the University of Oxford and Fellow of All Souls College and was for many years Professor of Political Science and Philosophy at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, where he is now professor emeritus. Taylor is now Board of Trustees Professor of Law and Philosophy at Northwestern University.

Ken Robinson on Passion
Ken Robinson believes that everyone is born with extraordinary capability. So what happens to all that talent as we bump through life, getting by, but never realizing our true potential?
For most of us the problem isn’t that we aim too high and fail - it’s just the opposite - we aim too low and succeed.
We need to find that magic spot where our natural talent meets our personal passion. This means we need to know ourselves better. Whilst we content ourselves with doing what we’re competent at, but don’t truly love, we’ll never excel. And, according to Ken, finding purpose in our work is essentially to knowing who we really are.
Get ready to unleash your inner fervor as Ken takes to our pulpit to inspire you to follow your passion.
Sir Ken Robinson is a leader in the development of creativity, innovation and human resources, working with governments and the world’s leading cultural organizations. Born in Liverpool, he was Director of The Arts Project (1985-89), and is Emeritus Professor of Education at the University of Warwick. He was knighted in 2003 for his contribution to education and the arts. Recent publications include Out of Our Minds: Learning to be Creative (2001) and The Element: How Finding Your Passion Changes Everything (2009).

Alain de Botton - On Pessimism
In the constant search for happiness, philosopher Alain de Botton believes that we should all learn to be a bit more pessimistic.
In this secular sermon, Alain challenges the great bourgeois promise that everyone can find happiness in love and work and suggests that we take on the joys of pessimism instead. He argues that the chances of anyone succeeding in both areas (let alone in one) are extremely remote - and that it is therefore peculiar, and deeply cruel, to base our societies around these values. Indeed, in denying a place for misery and despair, the modern world denies us the possibility of collective consolation, condemning us instead to solitary feelings of shame and persecution.
Alain de Botton is the author of numerous essayistic books that have been described as a 'philosophy of everyday life.' For more information, visit his website at: www.alaindebotton.com

The New Tithe
Mega-churches have used religion as fund-raising tool for too long. They shower their followers in sanctimonious platitudes, then clamor for their cash. This video encourages a new definition of tithing by giving to causes with accountability.
