Kumeyaay Dance - Ensenada, Baja California
Grupo Shiaw Kayumi of the indigenous Kumeyaay (Kumiai) people of San Jose de la Zorra, Baja California, Mexico, performing in Ensenada. www.wilderutopia.com The Kumiai on both sides of the border have retained much of their traditional knowledge, and many in Baja still subsist by harvesting natural resources from their land like yucca, pine nuts, honey, firewood, and by raising livestock and crops. Some of the Kumiai earn their living by making traditional arts and crafts for sale such as pottery, bows and arrows, and by weaving willow, pine and juncus baskets, including agave fiber carrying nets. Some of the men also work in Guadalupe Valley as cowboys or farmers as well as on their own ranches.

Kumeyaay Winter Solstice Double Sunrise 12/23/2011
Friday, 23 December 2011, 6:53 am PST Double sunrise from Kumeyaay Winter Solstice archaeoastronomy observatory site on Cowles Mountain, San Diego, California. The 2011 Winter Solstice occurred at 0530 UTC Thursday, 12/22/2011 (9:30 PM on Wednesday, 12/21/2011 in San Diego). This morning's sunrise at 6:52 AM PST was 33 hours 20 minutes after true solstice. In contrast to yesterday's viewing when the air was calm and the sky very hazy, especially to the southeast, this morning's conditions were cold, clear, and windy as result of Santa Ana winds that arose last night. In fact there was a wind warning advisory from the National Weather Service. In addition to noise and camera wobble from the gusty wind, there was considerable air turbulence, causing the skyline features to jiggle much more than during typical viewing. The large boulders are approximately 17 miles distant. I have now made this trek an annual tradition since the early 90s. I use records of prior year observations to help determine the best places to stand for seeing a symmetric double sunrise as a function of days and hours before or after true solstice, Today I only needed to adjust my position 5 meters south of the solstice viewing turnaround point. Notice how far to the right of the boulder piles the sun appears to move as it rises. That angle contributes to the challenge of identifying a good position for the symmetric view and most attractive doubling. This recording was made with a Nikon D7000 DSLR and ...
