DHL Express is a division of the German logistics company Deutsche Post providing international express mail services.^[1] DHL is a world market leader in sea and air mail.^[2][3]

Originally founded in 1969 to deliver documents between San Francisco and Honolulu, the company expanded its service throughout the world by the late 1970s. The company was primarily interested in offshore and inter-continental deliveries, but the success of FedEx prompted their own intra-US expansion starting in 1983. DHL aggressively expanded to countries that could not be served by any other delivery service, including the Soviet Union, Eastern Bloc, Iraq, Iran, China, Vietnam and North Korea.

The DHL Express Service has ceased domestic operations in the United States of America, as of February 2009. They are still highly popular for international shipments, for example to Iraq.

In 1998, Deutsche Post began to acquire shares in DHL. It finally reached majority ownership in 2001, and completed the purchase in 2002. Deutsche Post then effectively absorbed DHL into its Express division, while expanding the use of the DHL brand to other Deutsche Post divisions, business units and subsidiaries. Today, DHL Express shares its well-known DHL brand with other Deutsche Post business units, such as DHL Global Forwarding and DHL Supply Chain.

Genesis[link]

Larry Hillblom was studying law at University of California, Berkeley's Boalt Hall School of Law and had little money. He started running courier duty between San Francisco and Los Angeles, picking up packages for the last flight of the day, and returning on the first flight the next morning, up to five times a week.

When he graduated, Hillblom decided to go into the courier business himself. He found a niche that no other company was filling, offering to fly bills of lading from San Francisco to Honolulu. By flying the documents ahead of the freight they could be processed prior to vessel arrival and save valuable time after arrival.

Hillblom put up a portion of his student loans to start the company, bringing in his two friends Adrian Dalsey and Robert Lynn as partners, with their combined initials as the company name. All three shared a Plymouth Duster that they drove around San Francisco to pick up the documents in suitcases, then rushed to the airport to book flights using another relatively new invention, the corporate credit card. As the business took off, they started hiring new couriers to join the company. Their first hires were Max and Blanche Kroll, whose apartment in Hawaii often became a makeshift flophouse for their couriers.

The company started expanding their service through the early 1970s, first to the Philippines, then Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia. For lower-volume routes the company would hire couriers on a one-off basis, trading airline tickets for the delivery. This simple expedient would repeatedly save the company many legal hassles in the future, when would-be investigators would take them up on the open offer and make a delivery while taking their family on vacation. The first was when the FBI was tipped off about the groups of briefcase-carrying young men making repeated trips to Hawaii, and when they investigated and found nothing amiss, several agents became regular couriers for the company.^{[citation needed]}

Domestic expansion[link]

In the 1970s DHL was one of the only truly international delivery companies, and the only one offering overnight service. The only major competitor in the overnight market was Federal Express (FedEx), which didn't open its first international service until 1981, expanding to Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Nevertheless, the domestic market was extremely profitable, and DHL was the third largest courier behind FedEx and the UPS.

DHL turned their attention to the overnight market in the US, following the success of FedEx, and opened a major distribution hub in Cincinnati in 1983. However, DHL was never able to overcome FedEx's head start, capturing only 6% of the domestic market. In comparison, at the same time they were by far the largest international carrier, with 40% of that market. By the late 1980s the domestic operations were losing money, while the foreign operations continued to account for 2/3 of the company's income. A European hub opened in Brussels in 1985.^{[citation needed]} DHL may also have been reluctant to invest in the US market during the 1990s due to numerous lawsuits involving the company in the US courts, instituted by South Pacific Islanders claiming paternity of children by Larry Hillblom, who had died in an air crash over the Pacific Ocean, his body never recovered. These lawsuits persisted throughout the 90's and were only settled when DNA was, under pressure of the courts, obtained from the relatives of Mr. Hillblom.

Deutsche Post began to acquire shares in DHL in 1998, finally reaching majority ownership in 2001. Following the completion of the purchase in 2002, Deutsche Post effectively absorbed DHL into its Express division, while expanding the use of the DHL brand to other Deutsche Post divisions, business units and subsidiaries. Today, DHL Express shares its well-known DHL brand with other Deutsche Post business units, such as DHL Global Forwarding, DHL Freight, DHL Supply Chain, and DHL Global Mail.

All US domestic flights were handled by DHL Airways, Inc. which in 2003 was renamed ASTAR Air Cargo. DHL's first airline still remains with over 550 pilots in service, as of October 2008.^[4]

• 2001: Deutsche Post acquired a majority (51%) of DHL's shares, and the remaining 49% in 2002. The new DHL was launched by merging the old DHL, Danzas and Securicor Omega Euro Express.
• 2001: The Packstation, an automated delivery booth, is introduced as a pilot project in Dortmund and Mainz.
• 2002: Bashkirian Airlines Flight 2937, a Tupolev Tu-154 passenger jet, collided with DHL Flight 611, a Boeing 757-200 cargo jet, at 35,000 ft (11,000 m) over Überlingen, Germany, due to a miscommunication between the pilots of Flight 2937 and Swiss air traffic control. The 69 people aboard the Tupolev (consisting mainly of Russian schoolchildren) and the two pilots of the Boeing were killed.^[5]
• December 2002: Introduced red and yellow new color scheme and logo.
• August 2003: Deutsche Post acquires Airborne Express, and begins to integrate it into DHL. The Airborne Express Airline named ABX Air is to provide contract ACMI service until 2011.
• 22 November 2003: DHL shootdown incident in Baghdad: Iraqi insurgents fired an SA-7 "Grail" surface-to-air missile at a European Air Transport Airbus A300 operating on behalf of DHL. The aircraft had taken off from Baghdad airport. The missile struck the left wing, disabling all three hydraulic systems and setting the wing on fire. The aircraft began a dangerous phugoid (vertical oscillation) but the crew managed to land safely at the airport despite only being able to control the aircraft by adjusting the engine thrust.^[6]
• September 2004: a planned expansion by DHL at Brussels International Airport created a political crisis in Belgium.
• 21 October 2004: DHL Express announced that it would move its European hub from Brussels to Leipzig, Germany (Vatry, France was considered and rejected). DHL's unions call a strike in response, paralyzing work for a day.
• 8 November 2004: DHL Express invests €120 million in Indian domestic courier Blue Dart and becomes the majority shareholder in the company.^[7]

• September 2005: Deutsche Post made an offer to buy contract logistics company Exel plc, which had just acquired Tibbett & Britten Group.
• On December 14, 2005, Deutsche Post announced the completion of the acquisition of Exel plc. When integrating Exel into its Logistics division, it added its well-known DHL brand acquired with the purchase of DHL Express to form the name DHL Exel Supply Chain. Following the latest deal, DHL have a global workforce of 285,000 people (500,000 people including DPWN and other sister companies) and roughly $65 billion in annual sales.
• September 2006: DHL wins ten year contract worth £1.6 billion, to run the NHS Supply Chain (part of the UK's National Health Service). DHL will be responsible for providing logistics services for over 500,000 products to support 600 hospitals and other health providers in England. As part of this new contract, in 2008 DHL will open a new 250,000 sq ft (23,000 m²) distribution centre to act as a stock holding hub for food and other products, with another distribution centre opening in 2012. The two new distribution centres will create around 1,000 new jobs.^[8]
• September 2007: DHL Express co-founds new cargo airline AeroLogic, based at Leipzig/Halle Airport, in a 50:50 joint venture with Lufthansa Cargo. The carrier will operate up to 11 Boeing 777Fs by 2012.^[9]
• December 2007: DHL becomes the first ever carrier to transport cargo via wind powered ships flying MS Beluga Skysails kites.
• May 2008: DHL Aviation moved their central depot to Leipzig; Germany, resulting in a significant positioning for improved service and timeliness to the European Union.
• 28 May 2008: DHL Express announced the restructuring plans for its United States network, including terminating its business relationship with ABX Air and entering into a contract with competitor UPS for air freight operations.^[10] Its cargo hub would shift from Wilmington to Louisville.^[11][12] The Air Line Pilots Association, International protests.^[13] See also: Wilmington, Ohio
• October 2008: Two DHL Express Middle East senior executives, David Giles and Jason Bresler, were assassinated in Kabul, by one of their own Afghan employees; they received military honors by the U.S. military, the first of such kind in Afghanistan.^[14]
• 10 November 2008: DHL announces that it is cutting 9,500 jobs as it discontinues domestic air and ground operations within the United States to deal with economic uncertainty. It is retaining international services, and is still in talks with UPS to transport DHL packages between U.S. airports.^[15]

• 30 January 2009 DHL ends domestic pick up and delivery service in the United States, effectively leaving UPS and FedEx as the two major express parcel delivery companies in the United States^[16] Limited domestic service is still available from DHL, provided that the packages are tendered to USPS for local delivery. NewEgg is one such company that uses this option as of May 10, 2011.
• April 2009: UPS announced that DHL and UPS have ended negotiations for an agreement for UPS to provide airlift for DHL packages between airports in North America. DHL said in a statement, "We have not been able to come to a conclusive agreement that is acceptable to both parties." DHL will continue to use its current air cargo providers, ASTAR Air Cargo and ABX Air for now.^[17]
• On 18 March 2010 a DHL Antonov An-26 aircraft made an emergency landing on the frozen Lake Ülemiste, close to Lennart Meri Tallinn Airport. Initial reports indicated problems with the landing gear and one of the engines. The flight was being operated by Exin on behalf of DHL. The aircraft involved was SP-FDO and the flight had departed from Helsinki Airport. Two of the six crew members were injured.

Services[link]

DHL Express's global headquarters are part of the Deutsche Post headquarters in Bonn.

Headquarters for the Americas are located in Plantation, Florida, USA, while its Asia-Pacific and Emerging Markets headquarters are located in Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong. The European hub is in Leipzig.

Most of DHL Express' business is incorporated as DHL International GmbH.

Major competitors include FedEx, UPS, TOLL, TNT and national post carriers such as United States Postal Service and Royal Mail. However, DHL has a minor partnership with the USPS, which allows DHL to deliver small packages to the recipient through the USPS network. It is also the sole provider for transferring USPS mail in and out of Iraq and Afghanistan.

DHL offers worldwide services, including deliveries to countries such as Iraq, Afghanistan and Burma. As it is German-owned, DHL is not affected by U.S. embargoes or sanctions and will ship to Cuba,^[18] Iran and North Korea.^[19] However there are strict codes for delivering to North Korea, as the country has shaky relations with the West.^[20]

As DHL is not a US company, it is not allowed to make domestic flights between U.S. airports. DHL contracts these services to other providers.^[15]

Environmental record[link]

Measures have been taken to physically control the amount of polluting by use of the alternative fuel examples. DHL changed vehicles in certain delivery fleets in accordance to their use of newer fuel ideas. The fuel was switched to compressed natural gas which they hope to accomplish with 50% of their vans.^[21]

On 16 September 2005 DHL won a High Court injunction establishing an exclusion zone around each of its 288 buildings in the UK as well as the homes of its 18,000 UK employees. The firm has been the subject of a campaign of intimidation because of their business with Huntingdon Life Sciences. The judge banned protesters from coming within 50 yards (46 m) of any DHL premises or the homes of their employees as well as any organized demonstration within 100 yards (91 m) unless the police had been given four hours' notice. The injunction also protects anyone doing business with DHL from intimidation.^[22]

DHL Aviation[link]

Deutsche Post owns five airline subsidiaries operating for DHL Express, operating a total of 96 aircraft and another 21 aircraft on orders, which are collectively referred to as DHL Aviation:

• DHL Aero Expreso, Panama City, Panama, services destinations in Central and South America.
• DHL Air UK, Hounslow, United Kingdom, provides services for the European network from East Midlands Airport.
• European Air Transport, Brussels Airport, Belgium, runs the European network. Its base has been moved to Leipzig/Halle Airport.
• SNAS/DHL, Muharraq, Bahrain, provides services from Bahrain International Airport for a wide variety of Middle East destinations, including Afghanistan, Iraq and Pakistan.
• Blue Dart Aviation, Chennai, India, provides services for the Indian network from Chennai Airport.

Sponsorships[link]

For several years, DHL was the primary sponsor of the Porsche RS Spyder Le Mans Prototypes in the IMSA American Le Mans Series. DHL also sponsors Ryan Hunter-Reay's #28 IndyCar Series car for Andretti Autosport. Manchester United Football Club announced their first training kit sponsor in August 2011, agreeing a four-year deal with DHL reported to be worth £40 million; it is believed to be the first instance of training kit sponsorship in English football.^[23][24]

DHL is a major sponsor of Surf Life Saving Australia.

For the 2011-2012 Volvooceanrace DHL is one of four race partners providing logistics for this worldwide event.^{[25] [26]}

In 2012, the company became the main sponsor of League of Ireland giants Bohemian F.C.^[27]

Jonathan Grant "Jonny" Evans (born 2 January 1988) is a Northern Irish^[4] footballer who plays as a defender for Manchester United and Northern Ireland. Evans was born in Belfast and started his career at Greenisland FC, where he was spotted by Manchester United scouts. He progressed through Manchester United's football Academy to play in several foreign tours in the summer of 2006. He then went on loan to Royal Antwerp and had two spells with Sunderland. He made his Manchester United first team debut in the 2007–08 League Cup, becoming a regular first-team squad member the following season. While playing for United, he has been their only Northern Irish first team player.^[5]

Club career[link]

Evans was scouted while playing for Greenisland FC, the same club that his brother, Corry, and Craig Cathcart played for before moving to Manchester United.^[6][7] At the age of nine, he was invited to attend the Manchester United Centre of Excellence in Belfast, before being invited for a trial in Manchester a year later. Rule changes within The Football Association at the time meant that clubs were limited to players who lived within an hour and a half of the club, so Evans' opportunities were limited. However, the Evans family soon relocated to Manchester, allowing Jonny to train with Manchester United full-time. Evans progressed through Manchester United's Academy, featuring in two of the club's three games during the 2006 summer tour of South Africa, as well as domestic friendlies against Celtic and Preston North End. Evans also made a surprise appearance in the Amsterdam Tournament against Ajax. Evans spent the first half of the 2006–07 season on loan at Manchester United's Belgian feeder club Royal Antwerp, alongside fellow youngsters Darron Gibson, Danny Simpson and Fraizer Campbell.

Sunderland loans[link]

In December 2006, Evans agreed to join Sunderland on loan until the end of the 2006–07 season,^[8] with Manchester United and Antwerp team-mate Danny Simpson joining on a similar deal in the January transfer window. The pair helped Sunderland clinch the Football League Championship title, with Evans winning the club's "Youth Player of the Year" award at the end of the season. Although manager Roy Keane was hopeful of re-signing Evans on loan following promotion to the Premier League, it was confirmed in June 2007 that Evans would be staying at Manchester United to push for a place in the first team.^[9]

On 4 January 2008, Evans rejoined Sunderland on loan for the second time, and was immediately drafted into the first team squad.^[10] Evans played the 90 minutes in his first game, losing 3–0 to Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup. Evans was criticised for granting Wigan the second goal of the game, for which he lost the ball on the edge of his own box, resulting in a deflected own goal by Paul McShane.^[11] His half-season with Sunderland was generally successful, however, and the team avoided relegation.

Manchester United[link]

Evans made his Manchester United debut on 26 September 2007 against Coventry City in the Football League Cup. Unfortunately, his debut ended in a 2–0 defeat. He then appeared as a late substitute for Gerard Piqué in a UEFA Champions League match at home to Dynamo Kyiv on 7 November 2007 to secure Manchester United's qualification to the knockout stage of the competition. He subsequently made his first Champions League start on 12 December 2007 against Roma.

Evans made his league debut for United against Chelsea on 21 September 2008, filling in for Nemanja Vidić who was unavailable due to suspension. The game ended 1–1.^[12] In December 2008, Evans made two substitute appearances for Manchester United at the FIFA Club World Cup, including one in the final after Nemanja Vidić was sent off shortly after half time. Evans continued to deputise throughout the rest of the season, appearing in a number of league games and in the League Cup final.

At the beginning of the 2010–11 football season, Evans became a regular fixture in the United team, partnering Nemanja Vidić in the centre of defence in the absence of the injured Rio Ferdinand. On 19 March 2011, Evans injured Bolton Wanderers and United States international Stuart Holden with a tackle which left Holden out for six months. Evans was given a straight red card however, Manchester United went on to win the game 1–0 with a Dimitar Berbatov goal.^[13]

2011-12 season[link]

Before the start of the 2011-12 season, Evans was handed the No. 6 shirt after Wes Brown was transferred to Sunderland.^[14] On 14 August, he wore his new shirt number for the first time in United's opening day 2-1 win at West Bromwich Albion, he came on for the injured Nemanja Vidić in the 52nd minute at The Hawthorns.^[15] On 23 October, he was sent off in United's 6-1 defeat against Manchester City after bringing down Mario Balotelli in a last-man challenge.^[16] Evans made his 100th appearance for the Red Devils on 30 November, he played the full 120 minutes as United lost 2-1 to Championship side Crystal Palace in the League Cup quarter final.^[17] On 18 March 2012, he scored his first goal for United after opening the scoring in the 5-0 league win at Wolverhampton Wanderers.^[18]

International career[link]

Despite having not yet made his senior debut for Manchester United, Evans was called up to the Northern Ireland squad for the first time in September 2006, making his debut in the memorable 3–2 victory over Spain. Evans has since retained his place in the squad.^[19]

Evans' younger brother, Corry, is a footballer who plays as midfielder for Hull City.

Evans attended Belfast High School in Newtownabbey, Northern Ireland, before moving to Ashton-on-Mersey High School in Manchester once he had been signed by Manchester United. He holds nine GCSEs, all A* or A grades.^[20]

On 19 December 2007, Evans was arrested in connection to an alleged rape that occurred at the hotel where Manchester United's Christmas party was held.^[21] On 8 March 2008, it was reported that Evans would not be prosecuted for any offence.^[22]

Christopher Lloyd "Chris" Smalling (born 22 November 1989) is an English footballer who plays as a centre back for Manchester United and the England national team.

During his youth, Smalling played for the Millwall academy before joining local non-league side Maidstone United. He was selected for the Kent Schools Under 16 squad in 2005 before progressing to the Under 18's in 2007, and his performances for Kent Schools resulted in him being selected to play for the England Schools Under-18 squad in 2008. During this time Smalling had also established himself in the Maidstone United first team, and his impressive displays for club and country led to him signing a two year deal with Middlesbrough in May 2008.

Barely a month after signing for Middlesbrough however, Smalling had his contract with the club terminated after raising concerns with home sickness. Shortly after, in June 2008, he signed for Premier League side Fulham. He made his professional debut with them in May 2009 in the final game of the 2008–09 season and helped them reach the 2010 Europa League final the following season.

In January 2010, Smalling signed a pre-contract agreement with Manchester United and joined them officially on 1 July. He made his competitive debut in the 2010 Community Shield victory over Chelsea which earned him his first career medal. Since his debut, he has gone on to make more than 30 appearances for the club.

Smalling has represented England at various levels and is currently a member of the England senior squad. He played for the England Schools Under-18 team in early 2008 before making his debut for the Under-20 side and the Under-21 side in 2009. He made his debut for the England senior squad in the 3-0 win over Bulgaria on 2 September 2011.

Early life and Maidstone United[link]

Born in Greenwich, London, Smalling started playing football at the age of nine for Walderslade Boys. After a short spell at Millwall's academy and Bredhurst Juniors, a sixteen-year-old^[3] Smalling joined Maidstone United's youth set-up and continued his education at Chatham Grammar School for Boys.

After rising through Maidstone's youth and reserve team set-up under the tutelage of coaches Peter Nott and Tony Cornwell,^[4] Smalling made his first team debut for 'The Stones' on 11 April 2007 in a 4–1 loss against Tonbridge Angels in the Kent Senior Cup.^[5] After making further appearances in the FA Trophy and Isthmian League Cup, December 2007 saw Smalling made his league debut for the club playing the full 90 minutes in a 1–1 draw against Harlow Town.^[6] Smalling impressed and quickly established himself as a vital part of Maidstone's backline, however injury and international duty restricted him to making only 11 more appearances for the Kent side.^[7] Smalling scored one goal for Maidstone, scoring in a 4–2 win at East Thurrock United on 24 March 2008, a game which was also his last for the club.^[8]

Fulham[link]

After attracting strong interest from Fulham, Gillingham, Charlton Athletic and Reading,^[9] Smalling signed for Middlesbrough on a two-year deal on 30 April 2008.^[9][10] However soon after his contract with Boro was cancelled with Smalling concerned about homesickness,^[11] and in June 2008 he signed for Premier League side Fulham.^[12] Smalling was not on a contract at Maidstone (as it would have prohibited him from playing for England Schoolboys), and as such the Isthmian League club were not entitled to a fee for the player, however Fulham struck a deal which saw Maidstone given £10,000 upon the transfer and £10,000 for every ten league games he played.^[13] He was made captain of the club's Development Squad by manager Billy McKinlay.^[14]

On 24 May 2009, Smalling made his Premier League debut for Fulham, replacing Aaron Hughes in the 77th minute in the final game of the 2008–09 season in a 2–0 home loss to Everton.^[15] Smalling made his first start for Fulham in on 17 September, in an away tie with CSKA Sofia in the UEFA Europa League with the match ending 1–1.^[16] On 28 December, Smalling made his first league start for Fulham, in a 2–1 loss against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in Fulham's final game of 2009 and scored a decisive own goal in the 75th minute of the match.^[17]

Manchester United[link]

On 27 January 2010, Manchester United announced that they had signed Smalling, for an undisclosed fee thought to be in the region of £8 million, with the player staying at Fulham for the remainder of the 2009–10 season before joining United for the beginning 2010–11 campaign.^[18] The transfer officially went through on 1 July.^[19] He made his Manchester United debut in a 3–1 friendly win over Celtic on 16 July and conceded a penalty which led to Celtic's goal.^[20] He scored his first goal for the club in a 3–2 friendly defeat against Chivas Guadalajara on 30 July, heading in a corner from Darron Gibson.^[21]

2010–11 season[link]

Smalling made his competitive debut for United on 8 August in the 2010 Community Shield, appearing as a second-half substitute in a 3–1 win over Chelsea.^[22] His Premier League debut for United came in their 3–0 home win over West Ham United on 28 August, coming on as a 74th-minute substitute for Jonny Evans.^[23] On 15 September, he made his Champions League debut, playing the full 90 minutes in a 0–0 draw at home against Rangers.^[24] Eight days later Smalling scored his first goal for Manchester United, which was also his first senior career goal, in a 5–2 away win over Scunthorpe in the League Cup.^[25] Smalling then made his full Premier League debut for United on 4 January 2011, partnering Nemanja Vidić for the full 90 minutes in a 2–1 home win against Stoke City.^[26] On 8 July 2011, Smalling signed a new five-year contract with United.^[27]

2011-12 season[link]

Smalling scored his first goal of the 2011–12 season in the 2011 Community Shield against United's local rivals Manchester City, volleying home an Ashley Young free kick from close range to reduce the deficit to 2–1. Manchester United went on to win the game 3–2 and take the shield. The new season also saw Smalling adapt to a new role, as early injuries to Nemanja Vidić, Rio Ferdinand and Rafael allowed Smalling, Jonny Evans and new signing Phil Jones to replace them. Evans and Jones played as central defenders whereas Smalling was deployed as a right full back. Smalling scored his first ever Premier League goal against title rivals Chelsea at Old Trafford on the 18th September 2011, rising unmarked to place a header into the far corner to open the scoring, in a game United went on to win 3–1. Chris Smalling has been ruled out of the last EPL fixture and also for England's Euro 2012 campaign with a groin injury which Smalling sustained during Manchester United's 2-0 win over Swansea in the penultimate week of the EPL 2011-2012 season. ^[28].

England youth teams[link]

At the age of 17 and studying for his A Levels, Smalling was selected to represent his county (Kent), and the Kent Schools' Football Association then nominated him for trials for the England Schoolboy international squad.^[29] His trial was successful, and Smalling was selected to represent England Schools against Australia in January 2008.^[30] England won 2–0,^[31] and Smalling went on to play for England in the Centenary Shield, playing all four matches which including 1–0 victory against Wales Schools in which he scored the only goal.^[32]

Smalling made his debut for the England Under–20 team 31 March 2009, playing 45 minutes in a 1–1 draw against Italy at Loftus Road.^[33] On 11 August, four months after his Under-20 debut, he made his debut for the Under–21 squad in a friendly fixture against the Netherlands, coming on as a substitute in the 58th minute of a 0–0 away draw.^[34] On 14 November, Smalling made first start for the Under-21's in a 2011 U21 European Championship qualifier against Portugal at Wembley Stadium in a 1–0 win.^[35] He scored his first goal for the Under–21's on 8 October 2010 against Romania in England's 2011 U21 European Championship play-off first leg, converting from inside the area after an assist from Danny Sturridge. The goal, scored in the 83rd minute, proved to be the winner as England won 2–1.^[36]

On 13 November 2010, Smalling was called up to the England senior squad for the first time for their friendly against France on 17 November;^[37] however, he was an unused substitute in the 2–1 loss.^[38] He made his senior debut in the Euro 2012 qualifier against Bulgaria on 2 September 2011 in which he played at right back.^[39]
