Edward Villella: An Intimate Evening
chicagohumanities.org - See more Chicago Humanities Festival events. You know the cliché about the little boy who is dragged along to his big sister's ballet lesson and then gets hooked? That was Edward Villella. From 1957 to 1977, he performed with the New York City Ballet, earning acclaim as the greatest male ballet dancer the United States had ever produced. His consummate blend of masculinity and grace made him a favorite of choreographer George Balanchine, for whom he originated many great roles. In 1986, he founded the Miami City Ballet, where he continues to serve as artistic director and CEO. The Festival welcomes Villella for an intimate evening in which he reflects on his history as a dancer for one of ballet's greatest visionaries, as well as on his own vision for dancers today. This program was generously underwritten by Gilda and Henry Buchbinder.

"Viscera" World Premiere Ballet by Liam Scarlett
Liam Scarlett is the youngest choreographer ever to have been commissioned by Britain’s Royal Ballet to create a new ballet for its main stage. That work, named Asphodel Meadows and triumphantly premiered when Scarlett was just 24 years old, was seen in London by Edward Villella, who promptly invited him to make a new piece for Miami – his first American commission, and a considerable coup for the company.
Using a challenging score for orchestra and piano by the renowned American composer Lowell Liebermann, Scarlett has given us a complex and urgent ballet, specifically created to reflect what he sees as MCB’s outstanding dance qualities of energy, passion, musicality and radiance. Viscera is beautifully structured (a ravishing pas de deux is book-ended
by two driven group sections), meticulously crafted and gut-wrenching.

Carousel Waltz! 15 Minute Music Video From The Movie & Broadway!!!

Carousel is the second stage musical by the team of Richard Rodgers (music) and Oscar Hammerstein II (book and lyrics). The work premiered in 1945 and was adapted from Ferenc Molnár's 1909 play Liliom, transplanting its Budapest setting to the Maine coastline. The story revolves around carousel barker Billy Bigelow, whose romance with millworker Julie Jordan comes at the price of both their jobs. He attempts a robbery to provide for Julie and their unborn child; when it goes wrong, he has a chance to make things right. A secondary plot line deals with millworker Carrie Pipperidge and her romance with ambitious fisherman Enoch Snow. The show includes the well-known songs "If I Loved You", "June Is Bustin' Out All Over" and "You'll Never Walk Alone". Richard Rodgers later wrote that Carousel was his favorite among all his musicals.
Following the spectacular success of the first Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, Oklahoma! (1943), the pair sought to collaborate on another piece, knowing that any resulting work would be compared with Oklahoma!, most likely unfavorably. They were initially reluctant to seek the rights to Liliom; Molnár had refused permission for the work to be adapted in the past, and the original ending was considered too depressing for the musical theatre.
After acquiring the rights, the team created a work with lengthy sequences of music and made the ending more hopeful.
The musical required considerable modification during out-of-town tryouts, but once it opened on Broadway on April 19, 1945, it was an immediate hit with both critics and audiences. Carousel initially ran for 890 performances and duplicated its success in the West End in 1950.
Though it has never achieved as much commercial success as Oklahoma!, the piece has been repeatedly revived, and has been recorded several times. A production by Nicholas Hytner enjoyed success in 1992 in London, in 1994 in New York and on tour. In 1999, Time magazine named Carousel the best musical of the 20th century.
A film version of the musical was made in 1956, starring Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones. It follows the musical's story fairly closely, although a prologue, set in the Starkeeper's heaven, was added. The film was released only a few months after the release of the film version of Oklahoma!. It garnered some good reviews and did well at the box office, and the soundtrack recording was a best seller. As the same stars appeared in both pictures, however, the two films were often compared, generally to the disadvantage of Carousel. Thomas Hischak, in his The Rodgers and Hammerstein Encyclopedia, later wondered "if the smaller number of Carousel stage revivals is the product of this often-lumbering[film] musical".
There was also an abridged (100 minute) 1967 network television version that starred Robert Goulet, with choreography by Edward Villella. - Wikipedia
