Galaxy Collision- The Milky Way vs Andromeda!
The Milky Way and Andromeda galaxy are on a collision course! In about 3 billion years, the two galaxies will collide. Then over a span of 1 billion years or so after a very complex gravitational dance, they will merge to form an elliptical galaxy.

ESO- Zooming in on the centre of the Milky Way. HD 720P
This zoom sequence stars with a view of the Milky Way. We zoom in towards the crowded central region, in the constellation of Sagittarius (The Archer). By shifting to an infrared red view we see through the dusty clouds in this direction and get a close up view of the objects orbiting the supermassive black hole that lies at the centre of the Milky Way. The final views show the motion of a newly-discovered gas cloud that is falling rapidly towards the central black hole. Credit:ESO/MPE/Nick Risinger (skysurvey.org)/VISTA/J. The Church - Under The Milky Way
"Under the Milky Way" is a 1988 song by Australian alternative rock band The Church. Written by the band's vocalist and bassist, Steve Kilbey, and his then-girlfriend Karin Jansson, the song was originally released on The Church's Starfish album and won the Australian ARIA award for best song in 1989. The song was the band's only international hit, staying in the US top 40 for several weeks, and charting in Canada (#69) and the UK (#90). In their native Australia, "Under The Milky Way" was also a hit, peaking at #22. However, it was not their biggest homeland hit: The Church placed two singles slightly higher in the Australian charts in their career ("Almost With You" at #21, and "Metropolis" at #19). Unlike most of the band's songs, "Under the Milky Way" featured a 12-string acoustic guitar melody along with a solo that, although sounding like a bagpipe, was actually an EBow on a Fender Jazzmaster. According to a press release issued with Starfish, the song was written about an Amsterdam music and cultural venue called Melkweg (Dutch for "Milky Way"), which Kilbey used to frequent. The single was released in several configurations (7", double 7", 12", CD single), in many countries, with at least five different cover art designs. The main b-sides were "Musk" and "Warm Spell." Spanish versions added "Anna Miranda" and "Perfect Child." Sheet music for "Under The Milky Way" was published by Hal Leonard. A colorfully cinematic music video was filmed for the song; it is <b>...</b>

Milky Way Versus Andromeda As Seen from Earth
From HubbleCast. Scientists have been using Hubble observations to predict the future of the Andromeda Galaxy and the Milky Way, and how the collision will look from Earth. Projecting the motion of Andromeda's stars over the next 8 billion years, the astronomers now know the path that galaxy is taking through space. And it's heading straight for us! Computer simulations based on Hubble observations show how the two galaxies will crash together in around 4 billion years' time. The Andromeda Galaxy, some 2.2 million light-years away, is the closest spiral galaxy to our home, the Milky Way. For around a century, astronomers have known it is moving towards us, but whether or not the two galaxies would actually collide, or simply fly past each other, remained unclear. Now, a team of astronomers has used the Hubble Space Telescope to shed light on this question, by looking at the motion stars in the Andromeda Galaxy. We wanted to figure out how Andromeda was moving through space. So in order to do that we measured the location of the Andromeda stars relative to the background galaxies. In 2002 they were in one place, and in 2010 they were in a slightly different place. And that allowed us to measure the motion over a period of eight years. The motion is actually incredibly subtle, and not obvious to the human eye, even when looking at Hubble's sharp images. However, sophisticated image analysis revealed tiny movements that the scientists were able to project into the future <b>...</b>

This was filmed between 4th and 11th April 2011. I had the pleasure of visiting El Teide.
Spain´s highest mountain @(3718m) is one of the best places in the world to photograph the stars and is also the location of Teide Observatories, considered to be one of the world´s best observatories.
The goal was to capture the beautiful Milky Way galaxy along with one of the most amazing mountains I know El Teide. I have to say this was one of the most exhausting trips I have done. There was a lot of hiking at high altitudes and probably less than 10 hours of sleep in total for the whole week. Having been here 10-11 times before I had a long list of must-see locations I wanted to capture for this movie, but I am still not 100% used to carrying around so much gear required for time-lapse movies.
A large sandstorm hit the Sahara Desert on the 9th April (http://bit.ly/g3tsDW) and at approx 3am in the night the sandstorm hit me, making it nearly impossible to see the sky with my own eyes.
Interestingly enough my camera was set for a 5 hour sequence of the milky way during this time and I was sure my whole scene was ruined. To my surprise, my camera had managed to capture the sandstorm which was backlit by Grand Canary Island making it look like golden clouds. The Milky Way was shining through the clouds, making the stars sparkle in an interesting way. So if you ever wondered how the Milky Way would look through a Sahara sandstorm, look at 00:32.

One of the challenges in making this video, was trying to get good storm with stars shots. The opportunity doesn't come along very often, the storm has to be moving the right speed and the lightning can overexpose the long exposures. I had several opportunities this summer to get storm and star shots. In one instance, within a minute of picking up the camera and dolly, 70mph winds hit. One storm was perfect, it came straight towards the setup, then died right before it reached it.
Extended cut available here http://dakotalapse.com/?p=448
At the 1:57 mark a Whitetail buck came in to check out the setup. It was caught on 20 frames, and was there for about 10 minutes. It was only 50 yards from the camera, dolly and light.
At the 3:24 mark, a meteor reflects on the water of the small lake, see still below in Photos. There are also quite a few other meteors in the timelapse.
This was all shot in central South Dakota from June-August.
Canon 5D Mark II for a few shots, Canon 60D and T2i
Canon 16-35, Tokina 11-16
Shot in RAW format. Manual mode, Exposure was 30 seconds on most Milky Way shots, 20-25 on some of the storm shots, ISO 1600 or 3200 F2.8.
Simon Wilkinson at http://www.thebluemask.com created the music "Tempest" and sound for it.

I used the Dynamic Perception Stage Zero Dolly on most of the shots as well, it is awesome. http://www.dynamicperception.com

Two and a half billion infrared pixels are exposing our own Galaxy in this new image from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope! Science is all about getting the big picture, but some pictures are definitely bigger than others. You may have used your computer to make a large panorama yourself by stitching together a few shots from your camera. Depending on the camera the final picture may contain ten or twenty million pixels. Now can you imagine taking over 800000 images and combining them into a single two-and-a-half billion pixel image? Two teams of astronomers have not only imagined it... they've used NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope to make one. And it's online for everyone to explore. Most questions about this, are answered in the description below. Download this in full HD here - for home use only dakotalapse.com Windows Media Quicktime During the month of May, I shot Milky Way timelapse in central South Dakota, when I had the time, and the weather cooperated. The biggest challenge was cloudy nights and the wind. There were very few nights, when I could shoot, that were perfectly clear, and often the wind was blowing 25mph +. That made it hard to get the shots I wanted. I kept most of the shots low to the ground, so the wind wouldn't catch the setup and cause camera shake, or blow it over. Supermassive Black Hole in the Milky Way Galaxy
Watch this and other space videos at SpaceRip.com From a distance, our galaxy would look like a flat spiral, some 100000 light years across, with pockets of gas, clouds of dust, and about 400 billion stars rotating around the galaxys center. Thick dust and blinding starlight have long obscured our vision into the mysterious inner regions of the galactic center. And yet, the clues have been piling up, that something important, something strange is going on in there. Astronomers tracking stars in the center of the galaxy have found the best proof to date that black holes exist. Now, they are shooting for the first direct image of a black hole. From a distance, our galaxy would look something like this. A flat spiral, some 100000 light years across, with pockets of gas, clouds of dust, and about 400 billion stars rotating around the galaxy's center. That center -- bulging up and out of the galactic disk -- is tightly packed with stars. Thick dust and blinding starlight have long obscured our vision into the mysterious inner regions of this so-called "bulge." And yet, the clues have been piling up, that something important...something strange... is going on in there. The first to take notice was the physicist Karl Jansky back in the 1930s. He was asked by his employer, Bell Telephone Labs, to investigate sources of static that might interfere with what it saw as the killer app of its time... radio voice transmissions.
