Banjul!
Streets of Banjul full of sand but with little traffic & hassle. A tiny capital that hardly can be taken as a city. Although the long stretch of the beaches is not seen on the video but the cost line is great for anybody who want to build his house in a capital city with ocean view :).

19.2 Dumb & Dumber - Arrive in Banjul!
19 February 2007. A long, interesting(!) and very warm wait at the Barra Ferry compound ends with a slow crossing of the Banjul river. Vehicles and animals are wedged on the boat so tight there's no hope of getting out for air! With a cheer, and armed with only a tourist leaflet sketch map of coastal Gambia we follow Team USIMW (Trev & Jonah in their old Escort) down the ferry ramp & into Banjul. We soon lose them, and after a few wrong turnings, arrive in the Sahara Gardens finishing line (in Fajara, about 8 miles from Banjul docks) more or less by accident. We are all really excited, can't believe that we are actually here, in our little Pug in Banjul, after all the effort and preparations! Again filmed by Life Mechanics (Keith & Graham) and edited by travelling companions Dumb & Dumber. Sorry about the quality, I had to use a free download to rip the footage from Keith & Graham's DVD! I also lifted one or two stills from the PBC07 wiki but don't have info to credit them. If you see your photo, I hope you don't mind us using it. The 2007 Challenge raised about £130000 for Gambian good causes, mainly through the sale of the rally cars. We hope our Pug is now giving good service as a taxi in Banjul!

Guelewar Band of Banjul : Wollou ( Photostories by Jason Florio & Helen Jones )
Guelewar Band of Banjul : Wollou / LP : Tasito ( taken from : African Pearls vol.4 -The Teranga Spirit ) Photos by Jason Florio & Helen Jones : 930kmafricanodyssey.tumblr.com Guelewar Band of Banjul has been further developing the afro-manding sound of Ifang Bondi during a short period in the late 1970s and early 1980s. With strong percussion, a psychedelic tinge, prominent keyboards and saxophones, Guelewar's music is an "Aha-Erlebnis", but surprisingly enough, not a single album has ever been reissued on CD, whereas their LPs are sometimes offered at horrendous prices. Not much is written on the group apparently lead by Laye N'gom since the 1970s. Youssou N'Dour considers Guelewar as a main inspirational influence, partly because of the use of lyrics in a noble wolof as opposed to "street" wolof, and partly because Guelewar had resolutely moved forward from latin and highlife. Lead singer Moussa N'Gom has had a strong imprint on Guelewar's music with his expressive voice. He later left to join Omar Pene's Super Diamono before starting a solo career. Moussa also made a cassette with the Ensemble Lyrique Traditionnel du Senegal (1995) and he has recorded with Thione Seck. His current band is called le Groupe Talibe. From : www.musiques-afrique.com

Freestyle cycling...in The Gambia
Remember the feeling of freedom you had when you first rode a bike as a child? Some people never lose that. Bikes help people carry themselves to schools, work or homes all over the world but in some places they do more – they free you to have fun.
In the Gambia, people live by the philosophy “feel free”. What better place to start a freestyle bicycle stunt team in the heart of West Africa…
Mamadou Wuri Bah is the founding member of Topcycle freestyle team in Banjul, The Gambia. He and the guys in his workshop repair bikes in the day before sneaking off to do freestyle in the evening. They don't have helmets or protection but they love to ride.

The Republic of the Gambia, located in West Africa, is the smallest country on the African continent. The Gambia River, at which river mouth the country’s capital, Banjul, is located, crosses the centre of the territory and flows out into the Atlantic ocean. In this video I have recorded the essence of the population, with its various ethnic groupings, customs and immense profusion of colours.
