Asin; Pagbabalik : Masdan Mo Ang Kapaligiran Mayon Volcano, also known as Mount Mayon, is an active stratovolcano in the province of Albay, in the Bicol Region, on the island of Luzon, in the Philippines. Renowned as the "perfect cone" because of its almost symmetrically conical shape, Mayon forms the northern boundary of Legazpi City. Local folklore refers to the volcano as Bulkang Magayon (Filipino: 'Magayon Volcano'), after the legendary heroine Daragang Magayon (Bikol: 'Lady Beautiful') Mayon Volcano is an active stratovolcano. The current cone was formed through pyroclastic and lava flows from past eruptions. Mayon is the most active of the active volcanos in the Philippines, having erupted over 49 times in the past 400 years. It is located on the eastern side of Luzon, beside the Philippine Trench which is the convergent boundary where the Philippine Sea Plate is driven under the Philippine Mobile Belt. Where a continental plate or belt of continental fragments meets an oceanic plate, the lighter continental material overrides the oceanic plate, forcing it down into the Earth's mantle. Magma, formed where the rock melts, may be forced through weaknesses in the continental crust caused by the collision of the tectonic plates. One such exit point is Mayon. Like other volcanoes located around the rim of the Pacific Ocean, Mayon is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire. The southern islands are situated on the great Eurasian Plate, and fare the best because this plate is massive and stable. The northern islands are on a tongue of the great N American Plate, but this tongue is likewise stable although it comes under extreme stress particularly at its tip, sometimes called the Okhotsk Plate. It is the pressure from the Pacific that is the issue, as the Pacific is compressing. Likewise, the Philippine Plate is at issue, as it loses in the compression game and in essence is pushed under and lost. The Philippine Plate is tipping, rising at the Mariana Islands and diving under the tongue of the Eurasian Plate that holds Indonesia. This tongue is itself being pushed down. Imagine the domino effect of the Mariana Trench folding against the Philippine Plate, tipping this sideways to drive the western edge under the tongue holding Indonesia, which is at the same time breaking and bending to subduct under the curve of the Indo-Australian Plate. This is a domino pressure, happening almost simultaneously. The scenario guarantees that the islands of southern Japan will be doing mountain building, particularly at the point where these plates converge at Mt. Fuji. Es gibt einfach alles was sich ein Taucherherz nur wünschen kann. Großfisch, Wracks, Drifttauchgänge und Höhlen. Palau ist nicht ohne Grund eins der sieben Unterwasser Wunder der Welt. Tauchen ist das ganze Jahr über möglich. Von Januar bis April sind sogar Begegnungen mit Walhaien möglich. Alle Arten von Haien, Mantas und riesige Fischschwärme sind vor Palau keine Seltenheit. Die Artenvielfalt beruht auf die Lage des Archipels das zwischen zwei extrem tiefen Gräben liegt. Im Westen den „Philippine Deep" und im Osten den „Palau Trench". Das kalte nahrungsreiche Wasser aus den extremen Tiefen läst das Leben im Wasser explodieren. This interview was conducted in Honiara, Solomon Islands, on April 4, 1987, by Gerald Heslinga (NMFS/NOAA), who was traveling on assignment by ACIAR, the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research.
