Tribute to Greta Garbo
Greta Garbo (18 September 1905 -- 15 April 1990), born Greta Lovisa Gustafsson, was a Swedish film actress and an international star and icon during Hollywood's silent and classic periods. Many of her films were sensational hits, and all but three of her twenty-four Hollywood films were profitable. Garbo was nominated four times for an Academy Award and received an honorary one in 1954 for her "luminous and unforgettable screen performances". She also won the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actress for both Anna Karenina (1935) and Camille (1936). In 1999, the American Film Institute ranked Garbo fifth on their list of greatest female stars of all time, after Katharine Hepburn, Bette Davis, Audrey Hepburn, and Ingrid Bergman. Garbo launched her career with a secondary role in the 1924 Swedish film The Saga of Gosta Berling. Her performance caught the attention of Louis B. Mayer, chief executive of Metro Goldwyn Mayer (MGM), who brought her to Hollywood in 1925. She immediately stirred interest with her first silent film, Torrent, released in 1926; a year later, her performance in Flesh and the Devil, her third movie, made her an international star. With her first talking film, Anna Christie (1930), she received an Academy Award nomination. MGM marketers enticed the public with the catch-phrase "Garbo talks!" That same year she won a second Oscar nomination for her performance in Romance. In 1932, popularity allowed her to dictate the terms of her contract and ...

Greta Garbo: I Vant to be Alone
I have decided to start making tribute videos for my other favorite actresses, and Greta is going to be my first. Greta Garbo (1905-1990) was the "Swedish Sphinx" of MGM during the '20s and '30s. She is best remembered for her work in "Ninotchka" (1939), "Camille" (1936), "Anna Christie" (1930), and "The Temptress" (1926). She is also remembered for her relationship with actor John "Jack Gilbert (1897-1936). They were engaged in the late '20s and had planned to marry but when the big day came Greta got cold feet and left John at the altar. Photos courtesy of: Dr. Macro's High Quality Movie Scans. 7 Illusionist P1 - Martin Scorsese - A Personal Journey Through American Movies (1995)
"The Cinema is the greatest means of expression ever invented, but it is an illusion, more powerful than any other and should therefore be in the hands of the magicians and the wizards who can bring it to life." King Vidor Chapter 7 The Director as Illusionist Part 1 from A Personal Journey with Martin Scorsese Through American Movies (1995). Martin Scorsese is a master craftsman in the art of cinema with an encyclopaedic knowledge of Movies. It is a pleasure to hear his views on early American cinema where his love of the silverscreen was awakened and "coloured his dreams". Greta Garbo (1905 - 1990)
My video of Greta Garbo from my old youtube channel OldHollywoodVideos08...hope you all like it enjoy! Background Information (From Wikipedia) Greta Lovisa Gustafsson (18 September 1905 -- 15 April 1990), better known as Greta Garbo, was a noted Swedish actress and recluse. She was a major star in the United States during the silent film era and the Golden Age of Hollywood. In 1999, the American Film Institute ranked Garbo fifth on their list of greatest female stars of all time, after Katharine Hepburn, Bette Davis, Audrey Hepburn, and Ingrid Bergman. Garbo launched her career with a major role in the Swedish film The Saga of Gosta Berling. Her performance caught the attention of Louis B. Mayer, who brought her to Hollywood in 1925 to work at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM). She became a star of silent films. Garbo was one of the few actresses to negotiate the transition to sound[according to whom?]. Her first talking film was Anna Christie (1930), for which she was nominated for an Academy Award. MGM marketers enticed the public with the catchphrase "Garbo talks!" In 1932, her popularity allowed her to dictate the terms of her contract, and she became increasingly choosy about her roles. She received the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actress for Anna Karenina (1935), but she considered her performance as the courtesan Marguerite Gautier in Camille (1936) her best performance; the role gained her a second Academy Award nomination. After working exclusively in ...

Blanche Sweet- "The Trouble with Sailors" from ANNA CHRISTIE (1923)
Produced by Thomas Ince, and Starring the beloved Blanche Sweet..Based upon the Pulitzer Prize Winning Stage Play by Eugene O' Neil of the same name. Reunited after 15 years with her wayward Father, a drunken Sailor who now runs a Cole Barge, Anna soon meets the Bane of her Father's existence, Another good for nothing Sailor! And a young one at that! There is bound to be trouble! An Acclaimed hit for Sweet in 1923 at First National, the play was later remade in 1930 with Greta Garbo for her first Talkie at MGM in both English and German language versions. Although the Talkie was very successful and nominated for an Academy Award, author O'Neil always felt that the earlier Silent was a superior adaption of ANNIE CHRISTIE and much closer to his original story.
