Ofcom publishes 4G auction details
Communications regulator Ofcom has published an official timetable for the upcoming 4G auction that is due to see a whole host of 4G networks up and running by the middle of next year. The ultra-fast mobile broadband service was launched last month in the UK by EE, who rolled out the network in 11 cities across the country after Ofcom allowed them to re-farm their own 2G spectrum. This angered rival phone networks, and prompted Ofcom to bring the bidding process forward to the end of this year. Ofcom have now announced the timetable for the auction: 11th December is the application day where prospective bidders must submit their applications plus an initial deposit. Throughout December applications are then reviewed by Ofcom to determine who can go on and bid in the auction. Bidding will then begin at the start of next year, a process that could take a number of weeks. It won't be until February of March that bidders will find out if they have been successful. License fees will then be paid by these networks and licenses will be granted by Ofcom. These providers are then expected to roll out their 4G networks from the middle of next year. Ofcom and the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games
A short film about Ofcom's involvement in managing the UK radio spectrum during the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Ofcom is the communications regulator for the UK, and part of its role during 2012 is to ensure that the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games remain interference free. By regulating the radio spectrum and by using staff to monitor the frequencies, radio devices will be able to function without interruption. This video was made with permission from the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) and the Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS).

OfCom's pressure on Press TV-News Analsis-01-12-2012
If you're not aware by now, OfCom has decided to remove the Iranian English-language news channel Press TV from the Sky platform under the pretext that Press TV made administrative errors in its application for a license in 2007. It has also fined Press TV Limited in London a hundred thousand pounds. At the same time, Ofcom has made moves to revoke the license of Press TV Limited in the UK for what it calls Press TV Ltd's lack of control over the channel's broadcast. However, media observers say these charges are merely a pretext to remove the satellite channel off the air, as indicated in the WikiLeaks revelations. We will examine Ofcom's case and actions against Press TV in this edition of the Press TV News Analysis.

4G peace talks between Ofcom and mobile networks
When EE announced plans to roll out 4G a few weeks ago, their goal of having the service available in 16 UK cities by Christmas signalled the company was leading the way in providing super-fast broadband to Britain. But rival phone networks aren't too pleased by the prospect of being left behind, with make-or-break talks between the networks, media regular Ofcom and new culture Secretary Maria Miller happening today. They're set to discuss bringing an end to legal action that could delay even further the rollout of 4G in the UK. The likes of Vodaphone and 02 were furious after Ofcom granted EE, then called Everything Everywhere, permission to upgrade their spectrum to launch 4G in the UK way before the rest of the spectrum would be auctioned to rival networks in early 2013. Vodaphone said at the time of the announcement: "The regulator has shown a careless disregard for the best interests of consumers, businesses and the wider economy through its refusal to properly regard the competitive distortion created by allowing one operator to run services before the ground has been laid for a fully competitive 4G market. Now Ofcom is set to tell the Culture Secretary that the auction can be brought forward, in an effort to appease the networks who have threatened legal action over the prospect of EE having an effective monopoly on 4G in the UK for almost a year. 4G could effectively provide download speeds over ten times faster than 3G, and when the IB Times UK technology editor ...

Press TV viewer fights Ofcom in the courts
Press TV viewer William Spring has vowed to carry on his court case against British regulator Ofcom for what he sees as the 'unjustified' decision to remove the channel from the air in the UK. Spring had his latest legal efforts to challenge Ofcom dismissed by a judge who said the case 'was unarguable.'

Everything Everywhere Gets Ofcom OK For 4G
Everything Everywhere (EE) will launch superfast mobile internet in October, according to Sky sources, which would make it the first UK provider to offer the network. Telecoms regulator Ofcom approved an application by the company that owns Orange and T-Mobile to use its existing spectrum to deliver 4G. But EE's rivals, who have to wait until the end of this year to buy new licences in an auction of frequencies, say the decision gives the company an unfair advantage. A well-placed source at EE told Sky News the next generation of mobile broadband would be available in October, when EE launches a new, 4G-specific brand. The source said the company plans to start dropping the Orange and T-Mobile brands from around March next year, with existing customers being migrated to EE. The company applied for two trademarks - 4G Everything Everywhere@ and 4GEE@ - in May. In response, an EE spokesperson said: "Everything Everywhere confirms that we are planning to launch a new brand in the UK later this year. "This new brand will sit alongside our existing brands Orange and T-Mobile. We will reveal more information on our exciting plans in due course." Ofcom gave EE the go-ahead to launch 4G - which is seen as crucial for video, gaming and downloading on your phone - any time after September 11 this year. It said that allowing EE to use its existing 1800 MHz spectrum in this way will "deliver significant benefits to consumers". "There is no material risk that those benefits will be ...

Texting Overtakes Talking In UK, Says Ofcom Study
People in the UK are now more likely to text than to make a phone call, according to new research from Ofcom. While 58% of people communicated via texts on a daily basis in 2011, only 47% made a daily mobile call, said the country's communications industry regulator. The new trends were revealed in its annual communications market report. If you like this video please subscribe to my channel to see more videos like this. RSGB GB2RS News (21/10/12)..........Ofcom Statement On AM/SSB CB Radio
After speaking with a very helpful Ofcom staff member at the Newark Hamfest at the end of September I was told a statement was going to posted on their website about their intentions on the new CEPT directive on harmonising AM/SSB CB Radio across Europe. I am a firm supporter of this and hope it may become a reality in 2013. It was also nice to hear the RSGB GB2RS news service on the new experimetal 60 meter band. Dave M0OGY.
