Five Truths: Peter Brook
This video features two films from the Five Truths installation that focus on a Peter Brook influenced approach to the character of Ophelia. What are the differences between five of the most influential European theatre practitioners of the 20th century? How would these five directors work with the actress playing Ophelia in the famous mad scene in Shakespeare's Hamlet? What would they ask the actress to do and how would they ask the actress to behave? A video installation looking at these questions, called Five Truths and commissioned by the V&A; in partnership with the National Theatre was created by a group of contemporary theatre makers lead by director Katie Mitchell. The multi-screen installation brings together five interpretations of Ophelia's madness in Hamlet. Ten screens of varying sizes simultaneously play films of Ophelia interpreted dramatically through the lens of Constantin Stanislavski, Antonin Artaud, Bertolt Brecht, Jerzy Grotowski and Peter Brook. Curated by Kate Bailey, created by director Katie Mitchell, video designer Leo Warner, set designer Vicki Mortimer, lighting designer Paule Constable and sound designer Gareth Fry, starring Michelle Terry as Ophelia. The Five Truths will appear at a number of venues in the UK in 2012 including the Howard Assembly Room at Opera North in Leeds, the Lowry, the V&A; and the National Theatre. Meetings With Remarkable Men (Part 1 of 11)
Filmed in 1979 by Peter Brook. A classic spiritual movie of GI Gurdjieff struggles beginning with his childhood until his discovery of The Fourth Way, an ancient spiritual tradition that used sacred movements as meditation. The story in this film is based on Gudjieff's book with the same title, which is the second book of his trilogy: "All and Everything". During his long career, director Peter Brook has conducted a wide range of theatrical experiments, pushing audiences and performers well beyond their typical experience of theater, in an effort to achieve not a temporary catharsis but a transcendent, transformative event. As the narrator of THE MAHABHARATA says, "If you listen carefully, at the end, you'll be somebody else." This interest in transformation that has characterized the latter part of Brook's career continues with this adaptation of the autobiography of famed mystic GI Gurdjieff, which stars Dragan Maksimovic. Driven by a sense of unwavering dedication to unraveling the meaning of human existence, he journeys throughout the most unattainable areas of the East, encountering an array of Hindu fakirs, Buddhist monks, whirling dervishes, and gurus of every stripe. In search of enlightenment, he climbs the Himalayas, walks across the desert on stilts, and uncovers evidence of an ancient order, guards of an arcane wisdom. Most fascinating, perhaps, is the form of dance he created as a form of meditation and later taught in the West. A film that may be best ...

Peter Brook - King Lear (1971) (full movie)
A classic directed by Peter Brook, based on the Shakespeare drama. No copyright infringement intended. All rights belong to their respective owners. This video is for educational purposes only. If you like the movie, please purchase the official DVD. ------------------------------------------------------------ "Here we have what must surely be the bleakest Lear on film. Peter Brook has cut the play to the bone (cutting over half) and liberally re-arranging and conflating events. But much like Olivier's Hamlet the edits are almost always intelligently done and finely stitched together. If Brook has reduced the majesty of the play, what he's substituted it with is a painfully intimate cinematic experience. Brook's Lear feels like Lear a la Ingmar Bergman's chamber period with its emphasis on stark faces, starker landscapes and naked emotional impact. In the role of Lear we have Paul Scofield, whose performance was voted the best Shakespearean performance of the 20th Century by the Royal Shakespeare Company. Scofield's Lear matches the severity of Brook's production. This is not a sympathetic, pathos-filled Lear; rather, Scofield's Lear is a menacing, terrifying, stone-cold figure. What he lacks in the dynamics of an Olivier or McKellen he makes up for in sheer oppressive power. When Scofield looks into the camera, you feel the seething internal forces of Lear. His inimitable voice alone is enough to make one quake." -- Jonathan Henderson, Cinelogue John Murphy's review: www ...

King Lear (1971) Directed by Peter Brook CLIP #1
King Lear, played by Paul Scofield, is ridiculed by his fool and chided by his eldest daughter Goneril. This is my favorite film version of Shakespeare's famous play. It is grim, graphic, and flawlessly casted.
