Day at Night: Katherine Anne Porter, novelist and short story writer
CUNY TV is proud to re-broadcast newly digitized episodes of DAY AT NIGHT, the popular public television series hosted by the late James Day. Day was a true pioneer of public television: co-founder of KQED in San Francisco, president of WNET upon the merger of National Educational Television (NET) and television station WNDT/Channel 13, and most recently, Chairman of the CUNY TV Advisory Board. The series features fascinating interviews with notable cultural and political figures conducted in the mid 1970's. (Taped:06/25/73) Watch more at www.cuny.tv/show/dayatnight

Inspired by the Life in a Day project I spontaniously set out on a quest to videotape the most important moments of one day of my life. Armed only with a Nikon I faced the most terrifying of settings: High School. Set in my very own Katherine Anne Porter Highschool in Wimberley, Texas. Use of the Beatles song 'A Day in the life' is for purely entertainment purposes

The Ann Porter Memorial Symposium
Excerpts from the Ann Porter Memorial Symposium. The purpose of this event was to: * Raise awareness of the coal mining industry's impact on education in Appalachia. * Explore strategies to fund new schools situated away from areas affected by mining operations. * Visit Marsh Fork Elementary School in the Coal River Valley of WV - a seeping dam sits just 400 yards from the school's playground, along with a silo which loads powdered coal onto trains and sprays it with a chemical binding agent. * Honor Ann Porter, a champion and a friend to Marsh Fork Elementary, whose passion and conviction continue to motivate us today. sierraclub.org challengewv.org crmw.net thecolemanfoundation.org

Horton Foote On Carson McCullers
Horton Foote is one of our national treasures and is missed by all who had the honor to know him even though his work will remain as a piece of southern family trial-by-fire and comfort for the ages. I learned through a mutual friend of his daughter, Daisy, that Mr. Foote and his wife were friends with Carson and Dr. Mercer while they were neighbors in Nyack. After a couple of lovely phone conversations, he invited me down to the Soho apartment of his daughter, the actress Halley Foote. He tells some beautiful tales and adds to the mystery that is Carson McCullers. He tries to dispel the rumors of her alcoholism and only describes a loving, chid-like Carson. Mr. Foote was not sweetening the truth for the interview - this was the truth about Carson as it was shown to him. I am beginning a feature article to be title "Unravelling the McCullers" that will present all the contradictions in the perceptions of Carson and Reeves by those who knew them and thought they knew them - and think they know them now. Not to give away the ending but there is no resolution but it has been an interesting 20 years learning about the couple and talking to every who was still alive who ever knew, loved and hated them - including some of mine and Reeves shared distant relatives.
