(Manx: Inver Ayre) is one of six sheadings in the Isle of Man and consists of the parishes of Andreas, Bride and Lezayre.

Ayre is a House of Keys constituency, electing a single MHK.

The derivation of the word ayre is from Old Norse. It refers to a storm beach forming a narrow spit of shingle or sand cutting across the landward and seaward ends of a shallow bay. This may partly cut off a sheltered stretch of water from the sea to form a shallow freshwater loch. This word is still in use for the particular landform in the Northern Isles of Scotland.

Richard Ayre is a member of the BBC Trust, the governing body of the British Broadcasting Corporation. He is a former member for England of the OFCOM Content Board and chair of its Broadcast Review Committee. He was formerly a BBC journalist where he was Head of BBC Westminster (1989–93), Controller of Editorial Policy (1993–96) and Deputy Chief Executive of BBC News (1996–2000).

Richard Ayre began his career as a reporter in Northern Ireland. In 1988 the then Home Secretary Douglas Hurd banned Sinn Féin from the airwaves in response to Irish Republican Army bombing campaigns. It was seen by many as extremely damaging to freedom of speech and the press in Britain. When Ayre became Controller of Editorial Policy he took legal advice and was satisfied that the prohibition could not stop the use of actors' voices to replace the more cumbersome use of subtitling ^[1] This is credited as having rendered the prohibition increasingly ridiculous. He also re-wrote the BBC's Producer Guidelines into the most comprehensive manual of programme making ethics, which became a model for many broadcasters worldwide. He established Britain's first bi-media (television and radio) centre at BBC Millbank, introducing the first digital editing to network journalism. In 1995 Ayre played a key part in steering the Panorama interview with Diana, Princess of Wales to air - a decision which infuriated the BBC's then Chairman Marmaduke Hussey^[2].

Ian Ayre is an English businessman and the current Managing Director of Liverpool Football Club.

Born in Liverpool, he was educated at Litherland High School. Aged 14, he won a competition to take a penalty in front of the Kop, during the half time break at Chris Lawler’s testimonial in 1978.

Leaving school at age 16, he joined the Royal Navy. After leaving the senior service, he then undertook various roles in business in Asia, eventually becoming Chief Executive of Pace Systems.

Returning to the UK, he became Chief Executive and Chairman of Huddersfield Town F.C. for three years, before spending three years as Managing Director at sports TV firm Premium TV, an NTL subsidiary. He then moved to Malaysia, as CEO of Total Sports Asia, which included managing interests in Total Sports TV.

He is also currently the Chairman of The Vistor Economy Committee for The Mersey Partnership, overseeing the vistor economy for the Liverpool City Region.

Head hunted by a team working for then owners Tom Hicks and George N. Gillett, Jr., in 2007 Ayre was appointed Commercial Director at Liverpool. He then successfully built a new commercial structure, and dramatically increased revenues at the club. He sourced and negotiated the shirt sponsorship deal with Standard Chartered Bank by using the asian liverbird book to showcase the club's global fan base. The deal at the time believed to be one of the most lucrative shirt sponsorship deals in football. In 2011 he tried to negotiate a deal in which premier league clubs could choose their own TV package but this was rebuffed.
