LEW FIDLER: NYPD SHOULD STOP BABYSITTING ZUCCOTTI PARK
Recorded on November 16, 2011 BROOKLYN,NY (BROOKLYNPOLITICS) Councilman Lew Fidler's statement on the latest incident of antisemitism in Brooklyn's Jewish communities: I am deeply disturbed by the graffiti incident at the Avenue J station on the Q line today. Coming as quickly as it does on the heels of last week's horrible acts on Ocean Parkway, it is particularly chilling. We cannot and will not stand by and watch haters and hooligans demonize the entire Jewish community with impunity. Whether this is the work of one deranged person, a group of drunken idiots or some organized effort, it must be met with an immediate outcry. I am calling today on Police Commissioner Kelly to move some of those police officers that have been stationed at or near Zuccotti Park to our neighborhoods until those culpable are caught and brought to justice. People of good conscience can never be silent in the face of hate. Now is not the time to turn the other cheek or to look away. Now is the time to act. Note: The incident, which apparently occurred last night, was the spraying over of a sign that said "Avenue J" with "Avenue Jew". Assemblyman Dov Hikind was also interviewed about the incident on the local ABC station.

Simcha Felder Hires O'Brien Murray To Manage Race For New "Super-Jewish" State Senate Seat
07.17.2012 BROOKLYN,NY NYDN/GIFTERPHOTOS Can E. O'Brien Murray do it again? Simcha Felder's betting on it. The consultant known as O'B helped GOP underdog Bob Turner knock out Democrat David Weprin in the 2011 NY-9 special election to replace Rep. Anthony Weiner, and Felder, who's got his eye on that new "Super Jewish" SD-17 seat in Brooklyn, is bringing him on board as campaign manager. Murray scored a 2012 Pollie award for his work on the Turner-Weprin race, with the awards panel saying he "not only held together a hastily built campaign operation, but found a way to be aggressive despite a campaign that was basically broke." (Obviously, Turner's attempt to secure the GOP nomination to face off against Democratic incumbent Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand didn't go quite as well.) Orthodox Jewish voters played a significant role in Turner's House win over Weprin (himself an Orthodox Jew), so you can connect the dots on Felder's hire here... "I am proud to have O'Brien join my campaign," Felder, who spent eight years on the City Council before joining the city comptroller's office, said in a statement. "His addition, combined with the nearly 13000 petition signatures we collected, will continue to build on our grassroots support throughout the community." Felder is the most likely Dem to go up against GOP state Sen. David Storobin, who beat City Councilman Lew Fidler in that, er, protracted SD-27 race that kept us busy in the blogosphere.

POLITICIANS MARCH IN UNITY ON OCEAN PKWY
11-13-2011 Peaceful marchers sent a clear message Sunday to vandals who torched cars and scrawled Nazi swastikas in an Orthodox Jewish neighborhood of Brooklyn where Woody Allen was raised: Don't repeat the kind of attacks that once led to the Holocaust. About 100 Midwood residents joined elected officials for the walk past four public benches from which 16 swastikas had been removed after the pre-dawn attack Friday. "It was horrible," said Ascher Scheiner, 17, a student at a local yeshiva _ a Jewish religious high school. "My friend woke me up and said he heard a loud explosion." On Ocean Parkway, three parked cars _ a BMW, a Lexus and a Jaguar _ had been set ablaze. In addition, the letters "KKK," a reference to the racist Ku Klux Klan, were spray-painted on a van and anti-Semitic messages were scrawled on a sidewalk. State Assemblyman Dov Hikind, a Democrat who represents the area, said authorities told him they believe rags were soaked in gasoline, placed under the cars and lit. "I've never seen this level of violence here, in my 29 years representing this area," Hikind told The Associated Press. "This goes beyond the pale _ blowing up cars in the middle of the Jewish community." Hikind, who lives in the neighborhood, then rushed off Sunday to see his 90-year-old mother, an Auschwitz survivor. He said he walks past the benches with her on their way to Sabbath services. "All I could think about was my mother sitting on a bench with a swastika," he said. Police made no ...

OCCUPY WALL STREET PROTESTERS
09-26-2011 ctpost.com NEW YORK -- Ten days of living in a concrete New York City park and you'd never guess the bandana-wearing Thorin Caristo, of Plainfield, Conn., was a father of two and dealer in antiques. "I've gotten about 24 hours sleep in the last 10 days," Caristo said Monday, looking very much like a man living on the street. "It's been rough." Caristo, 37, is one of about 300 regular "residents" of Zuccotti Park in lower Manhattan, although the inhabitants -- who are there to protest what they call Wall Street's greed, the weak economy and a host of other causes -- have been calling the park by its former name, Liberty Plaza. The group's numbers rise and fall throughout the day, and by around 4 pm on Monday, levels were closer to 700. By nightfall, documentary filmmaker Michael Moore had stopped by for a surprise visit. Last weekend, the movement, which calls itself "Occupy Wall Street" drew national attention after 87 people were arrested and a girl was pepper-sprayed by police as nearly 2000 people rallied to object to Wall Street's influence over government policies. On several websites, various participants of the protest are calling for President Barack Obama to form a committee to eliminate undue influence on politics wielded by corporations. The park, located across the street from One Liberty Plaza, which houses the Nasdaq Stock Market headquarters and the Financial Regulatory Authority's Dispute Resolution office, has become its own village, complete ...

TRIBUTE TO AMERICAN JEWRY
05-16-2012 WASHINGTON DC/GIFTERPHOTOS On April 20, 2006, President George W. Bush proclaimed that May would be Jewish American Heritage Month. The announcement was the crowning achievement in an effort by the Jewish Museum of Florida and South Florida Jewish community leaders that resulted in resolutions introduced by Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida and Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania urging the president to proclaim a month that would recognize the more than 350-year history of Jewish contributions to American culture. The resolutions passed unanimously, first in the House of Representatives in December 2005 and later in the Senate in February 2006. The month of May was chosen due to the highly successful celebration of the 350th Anniversary of American Jewish History in May 2004, which was organized by the Commission for Commemorating 350 Years of American Jewish History. This coalition was composed of the Jacob Rader Marcus Center of the American Jewish Archives, the American Jewish Historical Society, the Library of Congress and the National Archives and Records Administration. Leading the way in implementation of the annual celebration is the Jewish American Heritage Month Coalition, formed in March 2007 and convened by United Jewish Communities, the Jacob Rader Marcus Center of the American Jewish Archives and the American Jewish Historical Society.

NYC ING MARATHON 2011
Created on November 6, 2011 NYC New York, November 6, 2011—Geoffrey Mutai of Kenya and Firehiwot Dado of Ethiopia won the ING New York City Marathon 2011 titles today in perfect marathon weather. Amanda McGrory of the USA reprised her 2006 women's wheelchair win, and Masazumi Soejima became the first Japanese winner in any division of the marathon by winning the men's wheelchair race in 1:31:41. Mutai, also the reigning Boston Marathon champion, ran 2:05:06 to slice an incredible 2 minutes and 37 seconds off the old course record, set by Ethiopia's Tesfaye Jifar in 2001. McGrory's 1:50:24 also shattered the course record of 1:52:38, which Edith Wolf-Hunkeler set in 2007. Dado and New York-resident Ethiopian Buzunesh Deba passed Kenya's Mary Keitany at the 24-mile mark after Keitany had gone out in a brave but self-destructive 1:07:56 first half--pace for a sub-2:17 marathon. Dado won in 2:23:15; Deba finished second, only four seconds back, and Keitany hung on for third, the same place she took last year. The quality of the men's field was illustrated by the finish of 2009 champion Meb Keflezighi of the USA, who ran a personal-best 2:09:13--two seconds faster than his winning time two years ago--and finished sixth, more than four minutes behind Geoffrey Mutai. Emmanuel Mutai of Kenya (no relation) finished second and secured the 2010-2011 World Marathon Majors title (Russia's Liliya Shobukhova had already clinched the women's title), worth $500000; Tsegaye Kebede of ...

BLOOMBERG SODA BAN
08.14.2012 BROOKLYN,NY NYT/ "Strong Words From Both Sides at a Hearing on Bloomberg's Soda Ban" (news article, July 25) offers a glimpse into some of the perspectives shared at the public hearing on Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg's proposal to restrict sales of large sweetened beverages in New York City. With 475 restaurants in the city, Dunkin' Donuts has joined several other restaurants and associations to fight this proposal. Any regulation to eliminate people's right to buy beverages in sizes of their choice is not in the public interest and not an appropriate answer for battling obesity. Restaurants have a responsibility to offer a variety of menu options and easy-to-read nutritional information. But then it should be up to individuals to make choices that are right for them. The proposed regulation is flawed because it includes certain businesses and leaves out others, notably convenience stores. This will create some absurd scenarios. Imagine going to Dunkin' Donuts and being denied a medium iced coffee with skim milk and sugar, only to walk across the street to a convenience store and buy a Super Big Gulp soft drink, containing considerably more sugar. There's no single answer to the issue of obesity in New York, but restaurants can and should play a role in finding a fair and effective solution.

BRONX RIVER PARKWAY CRASH
04-29-2012 BRONX,NY (AP) - The section of highway where an accident sent seven members of a Bronx family flying over a guardrail and plummeting to their deaths has narrow lanes, steep hills, tight turns, inadequate guardrails and no breakdown lane, an auto safety group said Monday. The Bronx River Parkway "lacks modern transportation engineering features," said Robert Sinclair, spokesman for the American Automobile Association's New York City affiliate. He said it was conceived in 1907 and opened in 1925 as "the first limited access multilane highway in the US" Three sections of the parkway in the Bronx, including one at or near the accident site, are on the state Transportation Department's 5 Percent List, a federally mandated report of locations "exhibiting the most severe highway safety needs." The driver, Maria Gonzalez, clipped a highway divider and damaged a tire Sunday afternoon before her SUV plunged off a highway and six stories down into a ravine on the grounds of the Bronx Zoo, killing three generations of a family, including three children, police said. Juan Gonzalez, the driver's husband, blamed the state, at least in part, for the crash. "He says it's very careless of the state to let that happen," a relative said, translating Gonzalez's Spanish at a funeral home. "There's been several incidents before this. Accidents such as this and they haven't done anything to prevent this." The state Department of Transportation's only comment was an email message that ...
