AB 32 Now and in the Future
A brief overview of the primary programs within California's landmark climate change legislation -- Assembly Bill 32: The Global Warming Solutions Act. In 2006, the California Legislature passed and Governor Schwarzenegger signed AB 32, the Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006, which set the 2020 greenhouse gas emissions reduction goal into law. It directed the California Air Resources Board (ARB or Board) to begin developing discrete early actions to reduce greenhouse gases while also preparing a scoping plan to identify how best to reach the 2020 limit. The reduction measures to meet the 2020 target are to be adopted by the start of 2011. http://www.arb.ca.gov/cc/ab32/ab32.htm Assembly Bill 32 (AB 32) required the California Air Resources Board (ARB or Board) to develop a Scoping Plan that describes the approach California will take to reduce greenhouse gases (GHG) to achieve the goal of reducing emissions to 1990 levels by 2020. The Scoping Plan was first considered by the Board in 2008 and must be updated every five years. On May 22, 2014, the California Air Resources Board today approved the first update to the AB 32 Scoping Plan.
