Haruki MURAKAMI: In SEARCH of this elusive WRITER (DOCUMENTARY)
Haruki Murakami (村上春樹, Murakami Haruki?, born January 12, 1949) is a Japanese writer and translator.[1] His works of fiction and non-fiction have garnered him critical acclaim and numerous awards. He is considered an important figure in postmodern literature. The Guardian praised him as "among the world's greatest living novelists" for his works and achievements.[2] Murakami was born in Japan during the post--World War II baby boom.[3] Although born in Kyoto, he spent his youth in Shukugawa (Nishinomiya), Ashiya and Kobe.[4][5] His father was the son of a Buddhist priest,[6] and his mother the daughter of an Osaka merchant.[7] Both taught Japanese literature.[8] Since childhood, Murakami has been heavily influenced by Western culture, particularly Western music and literature. He grew up reading a range of works by American writers, such as Kurt Vonnegut and Richard Brautigan, and he is often distinguished from other Japanese writers by his Western influences.[9] Murakami studied drama at Waseda University in Tokyo, where he met his wife, Yoko. His first job was at a record store, which is where one of his main characters, Toru Watanabe in Norwegian Wood, works. Shortly before finishing his studies, Murakami opened the coffeehouse (jazz bar, in the evening) "Peter Cat" in Kokubunji, Tokyo with his wife[10] (1974-1981).[11] Many of his novels have themes and titles that invoke classical music, such as the three books making up The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle: The Thieving ...

"Write what you know" - Nathan Englander on Misunderstood Advice
Author Nathan Englander explains that the age-old writing advice "write what you know" isn't about events, it's about universal emotions like love, loss, and longing. Directed / Produced by Jonathan Fowler and Elizabeth Rodd Nathan Englander: I think the most famous piece of writing advice that there is, is "write what you know." And I think it's, honestly, I think it's the best piece of advice there is, but I think it is the most misunderstood, most mis-taught, most misinterpreted piece of advice that there is. It's so simple and so obvious and it used to terrify me, this idea of "write what you know." I was dreaming . . . I was in suburbia, you know, in my house, dreaming of being a writer, and I thought, what am I going to do with " write what you know?" What I know from childhood is, I was on the couch watching TV, so I should simply rewrite a whole series of sitcoms for you. I should write a book called What's Happening, and then I should write a book called Little House on the Prairie's on at Five O'Clock. You know what I'm saying? That was my childhood experience, and this didn't feel to me when I thought of the books that I love and the kind of stuff that I wanted to write, it felt like, I am going to be very limited by "write what I know." You know, this idea, like, my family history . . . we don't . . . you know, I'm very American. I don't know my family history. That's something I address in the new book. I wrote a story about that very idea. But I don't know ...

Bring me to my epiphany For I have seen the world for what It is. Questioning my realisation till it comes As I am swept away from feeling numb. With my back against the world With everything I have seen Just take a look around, compassion is dead. With my back against the world With everything I have seen Just take a look around, everyone thinks they wear a crown. After all thats done and said With all we've been through Everyone leaves in the end Just take a look around Compassion is dead! Bring me to my destiny For I have sailed these seas. Bring me to my epiphany For I have seen the world for what It is. Questioning my realisation till it comes As I am swept away from feeling numb. There is one thing you must understand. We all need a hand To pull ourselves though, Oh. There is one thing you must understand! We all need a hand After all that's done and said with all we've been through everyone leaves in the end Just take a look around Compassion is dead! Don't take your close ones For granted Some friendships are just pretend. With my back against the world With everything I have seen Just take a look around, compassion is dead. Made by Hand / No 2 The Knife Maker
A project from http://bureauofcommongoods.com, Made by Hand is a new short film series celebrating the people who make things by hand—sustainably, locally, and with a love for their craft.
In our second film, we meet writer turned knife maker Joel Bukiewicz of Cut Brooklyn. He talks about the human element of craft, and the potential for a skill to mature into an art. And in sharing his story, he alights on the real meaning of handmade—a movement whose riches are measured in people, not cash.
