Opening Remarks at Senate Finance Committee Hearing with Sec. Sebelius on the President's Budget
On Feb. 15, 2012, Senator Hatch makes his opening remarks at the Senate Finance Committee Hearing with Sec. Sebelius on Pres. Obama's budget. US Senator Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), Ranking Member of the Senate Finance Committee, today questioned Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius on the Obama Administration's decision to circumvent constitutionally-guaranteed religious freedom protections by forcing religious institutions to provide preventive health services, including birth control, abortion inducing drugs and emergency contraception, even if it is against their conscience and deeply-held beliefs. The hearing was convened to examine the President's Fiscal Year 2013 budget proposal. Despite President Obama and Secretary Sebelius' announcement last Friday that the Administration intended to revise its policy, Hatch believes the only way to ensure that religious liberty is protected is through a full exemption for all religious institutions. At today's Finance Committee hearing, Sebelius could not say whether an analysis had been done to back up the Administration's claims that the mandate is consistent with constitutional and statutory protections for religious freedom. Hatch asked Sebelius, "I wrote you last July that your proposed contraceptive mandate would be 'an affront to the natural rights to life, religious liberty and personal conscience.' I note for the record that your response to my letter completely ignored this issue. Last October, 27 ...

Third Statement From Juneau Hunger Strike.wmv
Third Statement From Juneau Hunger Strike.wmv
On Day 16 a weakening Lead Coordinator attempts to communicate how the Movement came to decide upon a hunger strike as the way to move Senate Bill 3 forward. In 2009, Senator Bill Wielechowski was brave enough to put forth a School Meals Bill. It was called Senate Bill 213. It passed the Senate, reached the House Finance Committee and languished there. Senate Bill 213 died in Committee in 2010. In 2010, Brendan Joel Kelley published a cover story of Kokayi Nosakhere and his efforts to move SB 213. In 2011 Senator Bill Wielechowski bravely put forth a SECOND School Meals Bill. This is what we are fighting for now - Senate Bill 3. Again, Senate Bill 3 passed the Senate, entered the House Finance Committee and has languished there. Rather than see a Second School Meals Bill die in Committee, the Movement decided upon a Hunger Strike to bring attention to what is happening in the House Finance Committee. The Media is focusing on Rep. Bill Stoltze, Chairman of the House Finance Committee, as the one holding up the Bill. We ask that YOU please call him and leave a message at 907-465-4958.

Sen Robert Menendez (D-NJ) Defends Long-Term Unemployed - Senate Finance Committee Hearing 4/14/2010
April 14, 2010 - Senate Finance Committee Senator Robert Menendez comes to the defense of the long-term unemployed in the United States from the assertion made by Doug Holmes that providing additional weeks of benefits for the unemployed gives them no incentive to look for work by injecting common sense into the conversation. Sen. Menendez points out the jobs are simply not there with five unemployed Americans on average are competing for one job. He also continues to probe others for additional ways to help the unemployed talking to members of the panel. Senator Menendez was the only Senator on the committee to challenge the written testimony of Doug Holmes on this issue during this hearing.
