Purifying OTC Chemicals: Dichloromethane from Paint Stripper
Another installment in my series on purifying and isolating over-the-counter reagents. Here, I perform a distillation of paint thinner to extract dichloromethane (DCM) from the other components in the mix (methanol and "stoddard solvent"). Out of the can, the material is an extremely viscous goop, presumably for easy spreading and so it doesn't evaporate in your face instantly upon opening the can. After distillation, I collect about 100mL of crystal clear, water thin liquid. This is almost entirely DCM, with some methanol and water contamination. I'm not too concerned with purity at this time, but in the future I may post a video on how to purify the product as it's a pretty simple process. A note on the thermometer reading a lower temperature: user 'xenomancer40k' posted a good description about why that actually happens: "Condensation on the thermometer would make the temperature reading higher than the true vapor temperature as the latent heat would be transferred to the thermometer. Given the interaction of two light dipoles amid an assortment of (relatively) larger (relatively) non-polar compounds, it is far more likely that the VLE of your mixture had a lower bubble point than the lightest pure component due to mixture thermodynamics."
