It was converted to a mosque by the Turks and is now used as a museum. It is universally acknowledged as one of the great buildings of the world and a reference point in history of architecture. (The church is sometimes mistakenly called "Saint Sophia," as though it were named for a saint called Sophia.) The first great church on the site was built by Constantius II, the son of Constantine the Great, but was burned down during the Nika riots of 532. The building was rebuilt in its present form between 532 and 537 under the personal supervision of emperor Justinian the Great. It is one of the greatest surviving examples of Byzantine architecture. Of great artistic value was its decorated interior with mosaics and marble pillars and coverings. The temple itself was so richly and artistically decorated that Justinian is believed to have said Νενίκηκά σε Σολομών: "Solomon, I have surpassed you!" Hagia Sophia 3D
Hello, this is a personal project I have done. The Hagia Sophia is one of the world's greatest buildings. After visting Istanbul, I curiously thought to myself 'I wonder what the original church looked like'. After a lot research, this is how the Hagia Sophia possibly may have looked before the fall of Constantinople. It has taken me an entire year to complete, working on it on-off. I am very pleased with the result. I hope you enjoy this video. Facts: - Hagia Sophia survived many earthquakes. - The round tower located on the North East of the church is called the Skeuophylakion which was where all the Patriarchal treasure was kept. - The small building on the South side of the building was the Baptistery.

Istanbul, Turkey: Hagia Sophia
Hagia Sophia has served over the centuries as one of the greatest houses of worship in both the Christian and Muslim worlds. It was built as a church in the Byzantine style in AD 537 when Europe was on the eve of its Dark Ages. For four centuries after that, Christians in Europe looked to Constantinople (today's Istanbul) as the leading city in Christendom and this was its centerpiece. In 1453 the conquering Ottomans converted it into a mosque and it became a museum in 1934. Hagia Sophia marks the high point of Byzantine architecture and is the pinnacle of that society's 6th century glory days. It remains one of the most important and impressive structures on our planet. HAGIA SOPHIA Istanbul, Turkey
Situated on the shores of the Bosporus, Istanbul is the only city in the world that is located on two continents, Europe and Asia. Within it, a historic and religious symbol rises up into the sky, the Hagia Sophia. For nearly 1000 years, it was the main church of former Constantinople. Legend has it that Constantine, founder of the New Rome, had previously built a church of 'Holy Wisdom' here in 4th century AD Thus, the name of this church derives from the Greek. Although the first church, as well as a later building, were destroyed by fire, the Emperor Justinian erected a larger church in the year 532 AD, the church known today as Hagia Sophia. Throughout the centuries, Hagia Sophia served both as a church and a mosque but, due to the Turkish leader, Ataturk, it was transformed into a museum in 1935. As a result of Turkish influence and its function as a mosque, four minarets were constructed adding yet another architectural feature in addition to its magnificent dome.

Istanbul 3 Hagia Sophia
www.tourvideos.com Hagia Sophia was not only the world's biggest church but the tallest, largest man-made enclosed space when it was constructed in 532-537AD for the Emperor Justinian. There was no other building in the ancient world that could compare to this -- nothing came close to this absolute masterpiece of Byzantine architecture. Words and photographs can never truly capture the feeling of standing inside this awesome building. You feel very small looking up at the dome, which reaches 184 feet from the ground and appears to float above the church without any apparent support, "as if suspended by a chain from heaven," according to the ancient historian Procopius. This illusion of weightlessness and vast space is enhanced by 40 windows circling the dome's base and by two half-domes on either side of the central dome, along with four semi-domes that enlarge the corners. The main walls have dozens of huge windows that flood the interior with light and further expand the apparent size of this great church. The architectural beauty is enhanced by an elaborate richness of mosaics from the Christian era and Muslim calligraphy decorations.

The sound of Hagia Sofia CONSTANTINOPLE (Istanbul)
Hagia Sophia is one of the greatest surviving examples of Byzantine architecture. Of great artistic value was its decorated interior with mosaics and marble pillars and coverings. The temple itself was so richly and artistically decorated that Justinian proclaimed, "Solomon, I have surpassed thee!" (Νενίκηκά σε Σολομών). Justinian himself had overseen the completion of the greatest cathedral ever built up to that time, and it was to remain the largest cathedral for 1000 years up until the completion of the cathedral in Seville in Spain. Justinian's basilica was at once the culminating architectural achievement of late antiquity and the first masterpiece of Byzantine architecture. Its influence, both architecturally and liturgically, was widespread and enduring in the Eastern Orthodox, Roman Catholic, and Muslim worlds alike. Under Justinian's orders, eight Corinthian columns were disassembled from Baalbek, Lebanon and shipped to Constantinople for the construction of Hagia Sophia.

HAGIA SOPHIA ISTANBUL
Hagia Sophia (from the Greek: Ἁγία Σοφία, "Holy Wisdom"; Latin: Sancta Sophia or Sancta Sapientia; Turkish: Aya Sofya) is a former Orthodox patriarchal basilica, later a mosque, and now a museum in Istanbul, Turkey. From the date of its dedication in 360 until 1453, it served as the cathedral of Constantinople, except between 1204 and 1261, when it was converted to a Roman Catholic cathedral under the Latin Patriarch of Constantinople of the Western Crusader established Latin Empire. The building was a mosque from 29 May 1453 until 1934, when it was secularized. It was opened as a museum on 1 February 1935.[1]
The Church was dedicated to the Logos, the second person of the Holy Trinity,[2] its dedication feast taking place on December 25, the anniversary of the incarnation of the Logos in Christ.[2] Although it is sometimes referred to as Sancta Sophia (as though it were named after Saint Sophia), sophia is the phonetic spelling in Latin of the Greek word for wisdom - the full name in Greek being Ναός τῆς Ἁγίας τοῦ Θεοῦ Σοφίας, "Church of the Holy Wisdom of God".[3][4]
Famous in particular for its massive dome, it is considered the epitome of Byzantine architecture and is said to have "changed the history of architecture."[5] It was the largest cathedral in the world for nearly a thousand years, until Seville Cathedral was completed in 1520. The current building was originally constructed as a church between 532 and 537 on the orders of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian and was the third Church of the Holy Wisdom to occupy the site, the previous two having both been destroyed by rioters. It was designed by Isidore of Miletus, a physicist, and Anthemius of Tralles, a mathematician.[6]
The church contained a large collection of holy relics and featured, among other things, a 49 foot (15 m) silver iconostasis. It was the seat of the Patriarch of Constantinople and the religious focal point of the Eastern Orthodox Church for nearly one thousand years. It is the church in which Cardinal Humbert in 1054 excommunicated Michael I Cerularius - which is commonly considered the start of the Great Schism.
In 1453, Constantinople was conquered by the Ottoman Turks under Sultan Mehmed II, who subsequently ordered the building converted into a mosque.[7] The bells, altar, iconostasis, and sacrificial vessels were removed and many of the mosaics were plastered over. Islamic features — such as the mihrab, minbar, and four minarets — were added while in the possession of the Ottomans. It remained a mosque until 1935, when it was converted into a museum by the Republic of Turkey.
For almost 500 years the principal mosque of Istanbul, Hagia Sophia served as a model for many other Ottoman mosques, such as the Sultan Ahmed Mosque (Blue Mosque of Istanbul), the Şehzade Mosque, the Süleymaniye Mosque, the Rüstem Pasha Mosque and the Kılıç Ali Paşa Mosque.

Travel Istanbul, Turkey - Hagia Sophia in Istanbul
Take a tour of Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, Turkey -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats. Istanbul's famous Hagia Sophia is a classic example of Byzantine architecture. Its uniquely constructed dome is a source of interest for many. The church served as a Christian place of worship from the year 360 until the 1300s. Under the Ottoman Empire, it was converted into a mosque. As a result, the Hagia Sophia features both Christian and Muslim religious iconography. In 1934, at the start of the Turkish Republic, it was ordered to be transformed into a museum. It is now forbidden to worship openly here. The ancient and iconic Hagia Sophia has inspired similar architecture the world over.
