QIZILBASH People: Afshars, Shahsevans, Qashqais
The Afshar tribes of Iran are two distinct Turkic-speaking ethnic groups. The larger group is concentrated in the north of the country, and the smaller in the south. The Turkic dialect spoken by the Afshar of the north is closely related to the Azeri language, while the dialect spoken by the southern Afshar is more closely related to the Qashqai language. . Having arrived in Iran in two waves under the Seljuks and the Mongols in 11th and 13th centuries, respectively, Afshars are pastoral nomads. They have their summer quarters on the slopes of the Sabalan mountain at 4, 860 meters (Azarbaijan), between Lake Orumieh and Qazvin and Hamadan, and their winter quarters are in the hot plains of Moghan, near the Caspian Coast. Some Afshar tribes are also scattered in areas between Kerman and Bandar-e Abbas in southern Iran. Today, an ever-increasing number of Afshars have settled down and became farmers. Living in the northeastern Azarbaijan province, Shahsevans (renamed II Sevan after the victory of Islamic Revolution) were organized by Shah Abbas I in the 17th century as a militia from tribes of diverse origin. Mainly Turkish speaking, they were used to put down rebellions of other tribes. They were divided between Iranian Azarbaijan and the Russian or former Soviet Azarbaijan after the occupation of part of our country by the aggressive Russian forces during the Qajar Ka'ab. Tamim and Khamis. A small population of Arab tribes, descendants of early emigrants, lives in eastern ...

The Downfall of the Qizilbash - Presentation by Saif Tahir Ali Beg
This was for the Undergrad History Association at York University on Saturday 25th of February 2012. The presenter was Saif Tahir Ali Beg at York University in North York, Ontario, Canada. PLEASE NOTE: The last 30 seconds of the closing statement are missing from the program. This details the fall of the Qizilbash under the Safavid Shah's Shah Tahmasp 1 (1524 - 1576) and Shah Abbas 1 (1571 - 1629) due to their military, economic and political policies which once implemented reduced the Qizilbash power. Although done trying to improve the state and reduce its instability this did the opposite increased it. The end result was that the Safavid state collapsed in 1722 and the Turkmen dynasties of the Afsharids and the Qajar's came into being. However they were much weaker than and were unable to control the vast empire that the Safavids once had. In the end, they destroyed the state instead of strengthening it.

Kuch Khaas: Asad Qizilbash, acclaimed sarod player, performing live
Asad Qizilbash is the only recognised Sarod player in Pakistan since 1992, keeping this traditional stringed instrument from the sub-continent and its music alive. The Sarod is known for a deep, weighty, introspective sound, with a tonal quality somewhat resembling the classical guitar. Asad was born to the famous violinist KH Qizilbash, who was responsible for closing the gap between western and eastern classical music. After attending a concert performed by India's most legendary Sarod player, Amjad Ali Khan, Asad was inspired to devote himself to learning and mastering this difficult instrument. The discovery of his master's live performance became the paradigm for his music. In 1992 Asad became the only recognised Sarod player in the country and five years later he received Ganda Band Shagerd of Ustad Amjad Ali Khan in New Delhi.
