RCA SelectaVision VideoDisc demonstration
A friend recently gave me an old RCA VideoDisc player and a bunch of discs. This is a format that originated in 1981 and died in 1986. The format was not very popular. However, there are quite a few technological innovations to be found here. The discs are stored in protective caddies, and the player pulls them out and puts them back in. The result is that no dust or fingerprints ever gets on the discs. An automatic stylus playhead is used, which allows index skip, fast forward, and fast rewind. The FF and RW doesn't suffer from the video quality loss that VHS rewind/fastforward does. The image quality is about on par with a VHS tape. Not as good as laserdisc by far. The player needed some dusting to get it going, and one of the buttons was stuck, but it is now in perfect working condition. It's very quiet when operating and in general the video quality is quite good, considering that the newest disc made is 22 years old. I don't think that 22-year-old VHS tapes would hold up quite so well. Obviously, we've opened up the player here so you can see the inner workings. When it's closed, it protects the disc from dust and other contaminants. Music: Pictures at an Exhibition, which was the intro music for the system Movie: Bladerunner

1980 RCA Video Disc Player Commercial
This is a rare commercial from an even rarer form of technology, the RCA Video Disc Player. I'm jealous of the size of those discs! I can't stand these rink-a-dink sized DVDs :-) **This is from Echoes of the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s commercials and promos collection**

RCA Videodisc Demo- Bring The Magic Home
This is from the first in-store demo disc for the RCA SelectaVision CED VideoDisc player, which went on the market in March 1981. The disc repeats this segment several times over. During the "Lady Sings the Blues" clip you can see the CED format's trademark skipping- almost every disc does this. The second half of this clip shows the first player in action. The later players had motorized disc loading. I've had this posted on some of the better video sites but decided to post it here too. Most of the movie clips are copyrighted by Paramount Pictures, who I thank in advance for not pulling this. Paramount was one of the biggest supporters of the format from the get-go, strangely when DVD came out they waited more than a year to put out anything on that format.

Microwaving a Video Disc
The first ever microwaving video of a video disc titled "The Longest Day". The video disc measures 16" across. This is the original laser disc made by RCA. Do not let later smaller versions fool you. After microwaving one I found the material to be something between a compact disc and a record warping instead of sparking like a normal CD. To learn more about this state of the fart technology if it was before your time: en.wikipedia.orgRemember, microwaving food is for morons. This show is for entertainment purposes only, so please DO NOT ATTEMP these experiments at home. Experiments are produced in a professional enviroment with proper saftey equipment. Intro to Memories Of Videodisc
This is from the very last CED (Selectavision) Videodisc title ever made, given to the remaining RCA Videodisc employees when production of discs shut down for good in June 1986. (The format had been on life support for about 2 years after player manufacturing was discontinued in 1984- new movies were still being released in the meantime.) This is considered the Holy Grail of CED videodiscs since it was the very last and wasn't available to anyone outside RCA. The disc begins with a speech by Dr. Jay Brandinger, General Manager of Videodisc Operations. Audio for this part is only in the left channel, when this disc is played on one of the SJT models (or any others, like the Hitachis, which can automatically detect dual-audio tracks) the player is forced into mono mode. I transferred this on an SJT-250 to keep a constant stereo signal.

1985 MIT Media Lab Videodisc Holography Video
Chapter 6 of the MIT Media Lab's videodisc is entitled "Synthetic Holography." I was the writer/director/editor of this video chapter as a graduate student and member of the MIT Media Lab's Spatial Imaging Group (SPI) under the direction of late professor Stephen Benton. Note that majority of the work done at MIT at that time was Horizontal Parallax Only (HPO). We have made many advances since this video was produced. For example, most of Zebra Imaging's holographic technology is Full Parallax (including both Horizontal and Vertical parallax).

Here is a demonstration of the RCA SGT-075 CED Videodisc Player. In this video, I show the consumer removable panel on top, for changing the stylus. I also show the pick-up assembly, and open the stylus door to remove the stylus and show it to you. I demonstrate a few movies, showing both RCA beginning of disc fanfares. This player is going to a new YouTube friend's home. Enjoy!

RCA Selectavision CED player in action
A couple of my CED players and a quick look at my disc collection. I have over 260 discs and six players. I'll be making a few more vids on CED, this is cool technology that took 17 or so years to bring to the market only to fail after only four years.

RCA VideoDiscs 1981 opening in mono and stereo
This is the 1st version opening for RCA SelectaVision videodiscs featuring an edited rendition of Isao Tomita's "Promenade" from his electronic interpretation of "Pictures at an Exhibition" by Modest Mussorgsky. This video clip features the original monaural sound and a remastered stereo track that I have furnished for this clip. The opening was sourced from a monaural CED copy of "Tora! Tora! Tora!" The videodisc was played on an RCA SJT-200 CED VideoDisc player.

WORLD'S FIRST: Laser Video Disc Player made in 1982
Philips invented the first Laserdisc Player and Recorder in 1972, however this was an industrial machine and though demonstrated successfully, it was too large to be used by broadcasters or domestic users. Through further development and the use of microchip technology it was considerably reduced. However being a recorder it created additional problems of copyright protection. In the end it was decided to work on reducing its size further by having it as Player only. Capable of playing pre-recorded video discs in a similar manner to the videos available for the video recorder. Sony saw the disadvantage of having a competitor with a new far more powerful device to offer consumers. The sharp image and clear slow motion and search facilities were unmatched by the VHS video machine. As sony had bought up several film production houses at this stage it decided to use its influence to put a stop to the Laserdisc Player. New films would not be made available for the new machine, and from the old films only a limited number would be made available. Needless to say the player failed in the face of a large initial cost, expensive laserdiscs, but most importantly a total lack of films. As expected people opted for the video recorder and Philips faced near bankruptcy. Eventually it was Sony who came to their aid, offering future co-operation in exchange for sharing laser technology and profits. Out of this co-operation came the world's first CD Player in 1982, a Philips invention ...
