What is ISO or how to use ISO? Digital Photography Tutorial. Basic lesson for beginners
razzi.me www.facebook.com www.PhotographersOnUTube.com https Photography Tutorials & Tips: A detailed tutorial of "ISO" with picture samples. Important Notes: * The higher the ISO the more sensitive the sensor is going to be to light. * The lower the ISO the less sensitive the sensor is going to be to light. You use low ISO when shooting in daylight or with studio light. You use high ISO when there is not a lot of light available. The drawback of high ISO is graininess/noise in picture. Do post this on Facebook so others can also learn and don't forget to join the facebook fan page. www.facebook.com If this video has helped you, please THUMBS UP, COMMENT and SUBSCRIBE. Digital Photography - ISO
froknowsphoto.com One of the very first things in photography you will want to understand is ISO. ISO controls the sensitivity of your images sensor or how much light gathering ability your sensor will have. When we were shooting FILM it was called film speed, examples are 100-200-400-800 and 1600 ISO. Now, we no longer have film but it is still called your "film speed". In the digital camera you still have the ability to change your ISO generally from 100-3200 and in some cameras all the way up to 120000 ISO. You are no longer locked into one film speed until you finish the roll, you can change your ISO for every picture if you would like. Would it be a good idea to let the camera select the ISO for you? Absolutely not, you, are better able to determine what your settings should be. Let's dive into this head first and make it as simple as possible. Before I get into what ISO you should set for what situation lets look at what ISO directly controls. It controls how sensitive your sensor is meaning how much light it will gather. The brighter it is outside or in the situation you are photographing the lower your ISO can be. Keep in mind that ISO will directly effect your shutter speed. As you raiser your ISO your shutter speed will follow. For example if your shutter speed is 1/60th of a second at 100 ISO and you bump your ISO to 200 your shutter speed will jump one stop and go to 1/125th. The brighter the situation the lower the ISO, the darker the situation the higher ...

Photography Tutorial for Beginners: Aperture, Shutter Speed, ISO
Photography Tutorial for Beginners: APERTURE Tutorial SHUTTER SPEED Tutorial ISO Tutorial There three things that affect the exposure of an image: The APERTURe, SHUTTER SPEED and ISO. You need to find the perfect balance between these three elements to get the right look that you want, as well as the right exposure. The aperture affects the amount of light that comes into the sensor and the depth of field. The depth of field will determine how much of the image is in focus. The shutter speed will determine the length of the exposure. The longer the shutter speed, the more light comes in, and the shorter the shutter speed, the less light comes into the image. It also determines the amount of blur that appears in the photo. A longer exposure is more susceptible to blur and camera shake. The ISO is the sensitivity of the sensor to light. Lower ISOs mean that the sensor is less sensitive and therefore going to need more light to expose an image. Higher ISO requires less light to expose and image, but adds noise the the image. Noise will saturate color, making them look unrealistic. Getting the right exposure is all about balancing these three elements. It will take time, but if you learn the basics, it gets easier! What is ISO? Photography Lessons by Berger Bros Camera
Berger-Bros.com What is ISO? Yvonne Berger - instructor at Berger Bros Camera in Amityville and Syosset Long Island, New York explains the basics of what you need to know about ISO. An ISO is basically what your ASA used to be on your film. The ISO is the sensitivity of your camera to the available light. So, if you are shooting in a place where it is very bright light, like at the beach or at the park and it is a bright sunny day, a 100 ISO suits. If however you are going to be inside and maybe using your flash where there is not as much light, you maybe want it to be at something like 400 ISO.

What is ISO in photography / digiscoping? Lions in Kruger National Park, South Africa
Essentially, ISO as a camera function describes how sensitive the sensor is to the light that it receives. This means that a high ISO number means that the sensor very quickly gathers information (ie allows me to use a fast shutter speed) but because the picture information is gathered so quickly, the smooth quality of the photo is "penalised", introducing more grain/noise in to the photo. At the opposite extreme, a low ISO gives you great images with very little noise, but you will only have slower shutter speeds at your disposal. Every camera handles ISO and noise slightly differently, but let's split them generally in to the average compact cameras that are used for digiscoping and DSLRs. ISO 800 on Canon A590IS. faster shutter speed from the high ISO made this shot possible, despite being at night. Had to sacrifice image quality through noise. Compact digital cameras for digiscoping: With, by way way of example, a Nikon P6000 or P5100 (both very common digiscoping cameras), using the minimum ISO of 64 gives nice images, but anything above 200 tends to bring a lot of noise in to the images and is then only really interesting for key rare-bird identification photos when nothing else will work. DSLRs for digiscoping: Entry level DSLRs like the Canon 1000D or Nikon D3000 have effective ISOs going up to 1600. This range is fairly usable, and for various reasons, when using one of these cameras, I would normally start digiscoping with an ISO1600 and drop it down to ISO800 ...

One of the challenges in making this video, was trying to get good storm with stars shots. The opportunity doesn't come along very often, the storm has to be moving the right speed and the lightning can overexpose the long exposures. I had several opportunities this summer to get storm and star shots. In one instance, within a minute of picking up the camera and dolly, 70mph winds hit. One storm was perfect, it came straight towards the setup, then died right before it reached it.
Extended cut available here http://dakotalapse.com/?p=448
At the 1:57 mark a Whitetail buck came in to check out the setup. It was caught on 20 frames, and was there for about 10 minutes. It was only 50 yards from the camera, dolly and light.
At the 3:24 mark, a meteor reflects on the water of the small lake, see still below in Photos. There are also quite a few other meteors in the timelapse.
This was all shot in central South Dakota from June-August.
Canon 5D Mark II for a few shots, Canon 60D and T2i
Canon 16-35, Tokina 11-16
Shot in RAW format. Manual mode, Exposure was 30 seconds on most Milky Way shots, 20-25 on some of the storm shots, ISO 1600 or 3200 F2.8.

Canon EOS C300 = Awesome
In early Fall 2011, I shot some footage with a pre-production model of the Canon EOS C300 for one week in NYC. I created an article and a video for Canon based on my experiences with the camera. The video is meant to poke fun at most camera test videos I've seen over the years. Canon, not thrilled with my sense of humor, does not credit or condone this video, but I think it shows a lot of the camera's strengths.
You can read my full article about the EOS C300 here: learn.usa.canon.com/resources/articles/2011/c300_for_cinematographers.shtml
I believe that Canon made a beautiful camera that is sensible, reliable and portable in a way that I've always dreamed a camera could be. It prioritizes great skin tone and has higher ISO sensitivity than any other camera out there.
I know there's nothing I can say to change the minds of the RED fan club. For the rest of the skeptics, I think once you get your hands on it you'll understand how great this camera really is. Please buy this camera in January and go film some good skin tones in the dark. You'll love it.
Thanks go out to all my friends for helping me with this.

What you see is real, but you can't see it this way with the naked eye. It is the result of thousands of 20-30 second exposures, edited together to produce the timelapse. This allows you to see the Milky Way, Aurora and other Phenonmena, in a way you wouldn't normally see them.
In the opening "Dakotalapse" title shot, you see bands of red and green moving across the sky. After asking several Astronomers, they are possible noctilucent clouds, airglow or faint Aurora. I never got a definite answer to what it is. You can also see the red and green bands in other shots.
At :53 and 2:17 seconds into the video you see a Meteor with a Persistent Train. Which is ionizing gases, which lasted over a half hour in the cameras frame. Phil Plait wrote an article about the phenomena here http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/badastronomy/2011/10/02/a-meteors-lingering-tale/
There is a second Meteor with a much shorter persistent train at 2:51 in the video. This one wasn't backlit by the moon like the first, and moves out of the frame quickly.
The Aurora were shot in central South Dakota in September 2011 and near Madison, Wisconsin on October 25, 2011.
Watch for two Deer at 1:27
Most of the video was shot near the White River in central South Dakota during September and October 2011, there are other shots from Arches National Park in Utah, and Canyon of the Ancients area of Colorado during June 2011.

Plains Milky Way
During the month of May, I shot Milky Way timelapse in central South Dakota, when I had the time, and the weather cooperated. The biggest challenge was cloudy nights and the wind. There were very few nights, when I could shoot, that were perfectly clear, and often the wind was blowing 25mph +. That made it hard to get the shots I wanted. I kept most of the shots low to the ground, so the wind wouldn't catch the setup and cause camera shake, or blow it over. I used a Stage Zero Dolly on the dolly shots and a "Milapse" mount on the panning ones.
This was all shot at night. If you see stars and it looks like daylight, it is actually moon light. 20+ second exposures make it look like daylight.

Shot in RAW format, the Milky Way shots were 30 seconds exposure F2.8 or F1.8 with 2 second interval between shots, for 3-4 hours run time. ISO 1600
