Anamaría Merino (born 1977), commonly known by her stage name Ana Tijoux or Anita Tijoux, is a French-Chilean musician. She became famous in Latin America as the female MC of hip-hop group Makiza during the late 1990s. In 2006, she crossed over to the mainstream of Latin pop after her collaboration with Mexican songstress Julieta Venegas in the radio hit "Eres para mí". Tijoux has often been praised for "exploring sensitive matters devoid of violence."^[1] She is currently promoting her second solo album, 1977.

Tijoux is the daughter of Chilean parents living in political exile in France during Augusto Pinochet's dictatorship of Chile.^[2]

Biography[link]

After the return to democracy in Chile, Tijoux flew back to her father's land. Being a teenager, she found home in the emerging hip-hop scene of Santiago and she started rhyming first in French, then in Spanish. For a while, she formed part of a group that included Zaturno, later of Tiro de Gracia. In 1997, she joined Seo2, Cenzi, and DJ Squat to form Makiza.

Makiza released their first cassette in 1998, Vida Salvaje. It was an independent production but gained huge acceptance in the local scene.

At the same time, Tiro de Gracia became the best selling Chilean rap group of all times with their debut Ser humano!! and that focused the interest of major record labels in rap music. As a result of this, Sony approached Makiza and offered them a record deal. Aerolíneas Makiza was the result of this deal, a CD that included new and improved versions of some songs from Vida Salvaje plus new song, including the hit single "La Rosa De Los Vientos".

Aerolíneas Makiza put Makiza instantly at the top of the game of Latin American hip-hop. Their style of rap was much more evolved than most the other Spanish speaking rap published in the continent to the moment. Their production style resembled the New York underground sound inspired by the Native Tongues. Their lyrics lacked the overwhelming machismo and violence of average rap, focusing more in more sensitive matters. That helped them receive the approval from a wider audience that was not involved in hip-hop culture.

Right before the release of their second single and their touring through neighbor countries, Tijoux decided to break off the group for personal reasons. At the moment, she announced that she was abandoning not only Makiza but hip-hop as a whole and her music career as well.

In 2001, Tijoux moved back to France where half of her relatives still lived. She stayed in France until 2004 and during that period, she did not release any music.

After her return to Chile in 2004, she started singing with a Chilean funk band called Aluzinati. That same year, she appeared as a featured artist in Control Machete's last album, Uno Dos Bandera, and she also recorded a song with Julieta Venegas for the soundtrack of the movie Subterra.

It came as a surprise to the fans when Makiza announced a reunion show to promote the re-release of Vida Salvaje, now re-mastered and in CD format. Due to the success of that historical concert, Anita and Seo2, the only two remaining members of Makiza decided to reunite the group and started working on new material.

Casino Royale was the name of the new Makiza CD, released on 2005 under the independent label Bizarro Records. The new formation of Makiza included a third MC, Sonido Acido, and instead of using only one producer like they used to do in the past, they collaborated with different producers. In 2006, Tijoux announced she was leaving Makiza again and launching her solo career.

Tijoux started recording demos for her long-awaited solo debut with different producers. At one point, she even had a full band of live musicians, straying a bit from her pure hip-hop roots and exploring new forms and collaborations. During this time, she also collaborated as a guest vocalist in Julieta Venegas' radio-hit "Eres para Mí," which suddenly launched Tijoux to the mainstream pop market all over Latin America, Spain, and the United States.

In September 2007, Tijoux finally released her solo debut, named Kaos, under the independent label Oveja Negra. . Thanks to the first single, "Despabílate", Anita was nominated for the Latin version of the MTV Video Music Awards 2007 under the categories Best New Artist and Best Urban Artist. At the same time, she was nominated for song of the year together with Julieta Venegas for "Eres Para Mí".^[3]

In October 2009, Tijoux released her second solo album, titled 1977 after the year she was born. The album was a return to her rap roots, an homage to the "golden age of hip-hop"; it was largely auto-biographical, exploring mature themes from her own life, from the death of a close friend to having a creative crises, from friendship to bad luck, amongst others. It was simple and straight to the point, as emphasized by her leaving behind a lot of the singing she had been doing of late in other more pop collaborations, and concentrating on rap, both in Spanish and French. After years of sharing the spotlight with her group, collaborating with other artists, and trying to find her way as a solo artist, she has finally arrived in her own right—a raw, direct, and mature MC.

Recorded between May and September 2009, the new album was produced by Hordatoj, Foex y Tee, of the label Potoco Discos, together with Habitación del Pánico. Guests on the record include the saxophonist Agustín Moya with whom she worked with in Aluzinati, Andrés Celis, Solo Di Medina, Bubaseta, Stailok from the group Movimiento Original, DJ Dacel, Quique Neira from Godwana, Cómo Asesinar A Felipes, and the Detroit-based MC Invincible, whom she met over MySpace and did a virtual collaboration for the song "Sube".

The album and its first single 1977 were an immediate hit in the underground rap circles of Chile, where she was welcomed back after a bit of a stray. The record was amongst the top 10 of 2009 for the blog [worldhiphopmarket.com], and it was soon picked up by the U.S.-based Latin Alternative label Nacional Records, who released it in April 2010. She was invited to attend the prestigious South By South West Music Festival in Austin, Texas, in March 2010, and from there went on to her first ever North American tour. The song 1977 is featured in FIFA 11 soundtrack, and it also appears in episode five of the fourth season of Breaking Bad.

Pierre Bensusan (born 30 October 1957) is a French-Algerian guitarist. As sephardic Jews, his family came from Spain, Spanish Morocco and French Algeria. The genre of his acoustic guitar music is often characterized as Celtic, Folk, World music, New Age, or Chamber jazz. He has also published three books of music and tablature. A wide variety of musical styles and influences can be heard in his music.

Born in 1957 in Oran, French Algeria,^[1] he moved to Paris with his family when he was four years old. He took up the piano at the age of seven and, at the age of eleven, began to teach himself guitar. He signed the contract for his first album, Près de Paris, when he was just seventeen; it was released one year later, winning him the Grand Prix du Disque at the Montreux Festival. His many influences include Davey Graham, Larry Carlton, Django Reinhardt, Martin Carthy, Nic Jones, Ry Cooder, Big Bill Broonzy, Reverend Gary Davis, Mississippi John Hurt, Doc Watson, Jimi Hendrix, John McLaughlin, Bert Jansch, John Renbourn, Ralph Towner, Wes Montgomery, Pat Metheny and Paco de Lucía.

Pierre Bensusan's solo acoustic guitar work has featured use of the DADGAD tuning system and electronics such as delays, distortions and volume pedals, which have been largely abandoned on recent tours.

He includes scat-singing is in his compositions, both pre-composed and improvised. He has collaborated extensively with saxophonist Didier Malherbe, but today his tours are largely solo. He also performed the song "ELM" for the Cowboy Bebop soundtrack Cowboy Bebop No Disc for Yoko Kanno.

In 2001 Bensusan released Intuite, his first new studio recording in eight years and his first totally acoustic one. It won him critical acclaim^{[citation needed]} and was followed up with Altiplanos in 2005. He continues to write and tour, playing occasional gigs with Malherbe, as well as holding guitar workshops and writing guitar books.

Composer Michael Hedges wrote a piece for Bensusan. After Hedges' death, Bensusan wrote and recorded the song "So Long Michael" in tribute to Hedges' own playing.

Anna Lovisa Johnsson better known by her stage name Ana Johnsson (Swedish pronunciation: [ˈana ˈjoːnsɔn]) (born October 4, 1977 in Gothenburg, Sweden) is a Swedish singer and songwriter. Her first longplay disc titled Cuz I Can was released in April 2004 in Sweden. The international version was retitled The Way I Am and was released some months later. Her second album Little Angel was released in October 2006.

Early life[link]

Johnsson was born in Gothenburg, Sweden to Rolph Johnsson and Carina G. but later moved to Sunne, a village in the province of Värmland. The parents - both architects - contributed to her big interests in design, she has studied economics and multimedia, and had the dream of being a graphic designer, but in the end music became her main focus. As a teenager she moved to Karlstad and later, as an exchange student in Minneapolis, USA. She took up skiing as a hobby and was for a while a semi-professional snowboarder. Back in Sweden she combined studies with jobs in a record shop and as nightclub croupier.

1999-2005: The beginning and Excellence[link]

Johnsson's singing talents became obvious when she was a teenager she moved to Karlstad and fronted cover bands named @groove and Soulcream together with her brother, Petter who played drums. The bands played cover versions of tracks by Jamiroquai, Lenny Kravitz to Blur and Red Hot Chili Peppers, etc.

Her big breakthrough started when she heard about the first season of the TV series Popstars. She succeeded in the final and Johnsson, Jenny Bergfoth, Malin Olsson, Johanna Landt and Susanna Patoleta formed the band Excellence. They were a success, scoring five top 10 hits, sold many albums and completed a sold out tour. However, Excellence was not Johnsson's style of music, and she left the band (who only released one further song as a four-piece).

After the end of the group Excellence Johnsson started working as a solo artist. Johnsson chose to go as solo with the name 'Ana' instead of her real name (Anna) to be able to distinguish some of her personal life and her life as an artist and also because "Anna" is a more common name.^[1] In the autumn of 2003, she released "The Way I Am" on the radio and it developed into a radio hit in Sweden and Germany and it gave her a nomination for the 2004 NRJ Awards in Stockholm. Followed up by the singles "Life" and "Cuz I Can" from the fist solo album Cuz I Can in 2004 soon after, only released in Sweden. It was later released internationally as The Way I Am with some different tracklist.

She was approached by the head of Columbia Tristar during a cruise and was invited to contribute a song to the soundtrack of Spider-Man 2 (soundtrack). The song was called "We Are" and it became the first single to come off the soundtrack and was released worldwide. It became a big hit and she released her second album The Way I Am, which features songs from Cuz I Can and half a dozen new songs. "We Are" reached top 10 in several key territories – including the UK, Germany, Japan – and took the album to high positions in the album charts of close to 20 countries. In the long run, album sales exceeded 500,000 and "We Are" alone was featured on five million sold compilations throughout the world.^{[citation needed]} Next singles releases included "Don't Cry for Pain" which was co-written and produced by Max Martin, and "Coz I Can". In the summer of 2005, "Coz I Can" was picked as the official song for the German DTM's.^[2] racing, and Johnsson performed live at the event. In Japan, the album sold over 100,000 copies, earning her a gold certification charting number #1 for four weeks in a row.

In 2005 at the NRJ Music Awards, Johnsson won the award for Best Swedish Female, and Best Swedish Song. In Sweden, Johnsson was nominated to all of the most prestigious domestic awards including the Grammy Award. She won the Rockbjörnen award as Best Newcomer and the European Border Breakers Award with the album 'The Way I Am" in 2005. She hosted NRJ Radio Awards ceremony in 2006.

[edit] 2006-2007: Little Angel

Johnsson's second album Little Angel was released in Sweden on October 18, 2006. The album did not chart in the Swedish albums chart, despite both the first as the second singles debuting in the ten of the country's singles chart. It includes the lead single "Days of Summer", that charted and peaked at number seven (#7) in Sweden. The second single from the album, "Exception", is the theme song to the Swedish thriller movie Exit. The song debuted and peaked at number ten (#10) in the Swedish singles chart.

"Fate" was the title song for Finnish-Chinese movie Jadesoturi (Jade Warrior). The song was by the Finnish rock band Bleak, featuring Johnsson duetting with Caleb (lead singer of Bleak) on vocals, and the Finnish accordionist Kimmo Pohjonen, who also composed the score for the film along with Samuli Kosminen. "Fate" was on the Jadesoturi soundtrack that was released on October 11 in Finland. The film premiered on October 13 in Finland. A music video has also been shot for the song courtesy of Eyesonlymedia. On January 19, 2007, the song received the award for 'Best Nordic Song' at the NRJ Radio Awards.

In December 2006, it was announced that one track from the album, "Catch Me If You Can", had been picked the official song for the FIS 2007 Alpine World Ski Championships in Åre, Sweden, held in early February. The song was released as the third single off Little Angel on January 17, 2007.

Little Angel was released in Japan on February 14, 2007, containing two bonus tracks. The first one is "Falling to Pieces," the B-side of the "Days of Summer" single. The second was a new track "If I'm Not Dreaming." A new Japanese official website was created for the release of the album in Japan. In a message on the official website, Johnsson stated that she will be doing some promotion in Japan in the last days of January. The Japanese version is available in two formats, CD and CD+DVD: in both versions the CD contains the two bonus tracks and the DVD features the music video for "Exception" plus promotional and rare videos and an acoustic performances. The album peaked at number 28 on the Oricon albums chart.^[3] The album has sold over 20,500 copies in Japan as of April 13. "Exception," which was the second single in Sweden, was released as the first single in Japan.

2008-Present[link]

In 2008, Johnsson emboided the new face of Invercote! (Iggesund Paperboard). Part of the inspiration for the new Invercote communication campaign came from a song, "Catch Me If You Can". Johnsson performed live in two of Iggesund private displays. An EP (cover) was also made featuring the tracks "We Are", "Break Through Time" and "Catch Me If You Can".

In the issue of the magazine Inspire #31 from Iggesund the Swedish singer gave an interview where she said that she would take her big break moving to United States, take some time off, and start writing songs for a new album.

In 2009 Johnsson moved to San Diego, California where she lived until 2010 when she returned to Stockholm, Sweden where she currently lives.

Johnsson's musical career is currently in 'standby' due to her personal life.

Jorge Drexler (born Jorge Abner Drexler Prada; September 21, 1964) is an Uruguayan musician, actor, and doctor specialized on otolaryngology.

In 2004 Drexler won wide acclaim after becoming the first Uruguayan ever to win an Academy Award. He won for composing the song "Al Otro Lado del Río" from The Motorcycle Diaries.

Early life[link]

Drexler was born in Montevideo.^[1] His father, a German Jew, fled to Uruguay with his family at the age of four to escape the Holocaust.^[2] His mother is a Christian of mixed Spanish, French and Portuguese descent.^[2] Drexler was raised Jewish, but embraces Christian tradition as well.^[2]

Like much of his family, he studied medicine and became an otolaryngologist ear, nose and throat specialist.^[3] Drexler began playing piano at age five, before attending guitar and composition classes.^[4] Although he had an interest in music, he became a doctor like both of his parents.^[5] He attended medical school in Montevideo.^[2] During his time in medical school, Drexler took a break to hitchhike through Brazil.^[2]

He also studied music and recorded two albums, which were only released in Uruguay.

In 1995 he was invited to Madrid by well-known Spanish songwriter Joaquín Sabina, who introduced him to other important Spanish singers. Drexler went to Spain to record the album Vaivén in 1996 with Spanish musicians. Vaivén included some old songs from his previous releases mixed with new compositions. He moved to Spain and recorded another four albums: Llueve (1997), Frontera (1999), Sea (2001) and Eco (2004).

Although he lives most of the year in Spain, his latest three albums were partially recorded in Uruguay with Uruguayan musicians. Juan Campodónico and Carlos Casacuberta, former members of rock band El Peyote Asesino, have produced Drexler's albums since Frontera.

His music is a combination of Uruguayan traditional music (candombe, murga, milonga, tango), bossa nova, pop, jazz and electronic music, which results in very personal compositions with original arrangements. The words also play an important role in his songs. Apart from love, reflections about identity, race and religions are a constant in his work.

Drexler's song "Al otro lado del río" appeared in the internationally acclaimed film "The Motorcycle Diaries" (Spanish title: "Diarios de motocicleta"). Though Drexler himself sang the song on the movie soundtrack, it was performed together by Antonio Banderas and Carlos Santana at the Academy Awards ceremony. Upon his winning the Oscar for Best Original Song, Drexler's "speech" consisted mostly of him singing a portion of the song a cappella.^[6]
