Routledge is a British publishing house which has operated under a succession of company names and latterly as an academic imprint.^[1] Its origins may be traced back to the 19th-century London bookseller George Routledge. He later founded a publishing company in partnership in 1851 with his brother-in-law, first formally incorporated under the name George Routledge & Co. For the remainder of the century the firm continued to grow and expand its range of popular illustrated fiction, travel and reference titles, undergoing some further partnership and name changes in the process. However by 1902 the company was running close to bankruptcy, but following a successful restructuring was able to recover and began to acquire and merge with other publishing companies. These early 20th-century acquisitions and mergers brought with them lists of notable scholarly titles, and it is from 1912 onwards as Routledge & Kegan Paul that the company became increasingly concentrated on and involved with the academic and scholarly publishing arena. It was soon particularly known for its titles in the social sciences fields.

In 1985 Routledge & Kegan Paul joined with Associated Book Publishers (ABP),^[2] which was later acquired by International Thomson in 1987. Under Thomson's ownership Routledge's name and operations were retained, and in 1996 a management buyout financed by the European private equity firm Cinven saw Routledge operating as an independent concern once more. Two years later in 1998 Cinven and Routledge's directors accepted a deal for Routledge's acquisition by Taylor & Francis Group (T&F), with the Routledge name being retained as an imprint and subdivision.^[3] In 2004 T&F became a division within Informa plc after a merger; Routledge continues as a publishing arm and imprint under the T&F division, with a majority of its titles' range issued as academic humanities and social sciences books.

As a name in Camden publishing, it originates in 1836, when George Routledge (1812–1888) founded a firm with W. H. Warne. George Routledge and Co. was set up in 1851 with Frederick Warne, becoming Routledge, Warne & Routledge in 1858, and George Routledge and Sons when Warne left. After refinancing in 1902, the company took over J. C. Nimmo Ltd in 1903. In 1912 an amalgamation with Kegan Paul, Trench, Trübner & Co. created Routledge and Kegan Paul Ltd., a major London publishing house. Taylor & Francis bought Routledge in 1998.

Adel Taarabt (Arabic: عادل تعرابت‎) (born 24 May 1989) is a Moroccan footballer who plays for Queens Park Rangers (QPR) as an Attacking midfielder and can also be used as a winger.

He began his playing career in France at Lens before moving to English Premier League team Tottenham Hotspur in 2007. He was unable to break into the first team at Spurs under either Juande Ramos or Harry Redknapp and moved to QPR, initially on loan, in July 2009 and then permanently in August 2010. He quickly established himself at Loftus Road and was made captain by manager Neil Warnock at the start of the 2010–11 season. He represented France at youth levels but opted to play for his native Morocco at senior level making his debut in February 2009.

Early career[link]

Taarabt was born in Taza, Morocco.^[2] At a young age, his family moved to a small town called Berre-l'Étang, Bouches-du-Rhône, France. He began his career at Lens in 2004, and played 14 games for RC Lens B in the Championnat de France amateur.^[3] He made one first team appearance for Lens during the 2006–07 season.^[3]

Tottenham Hotspur[link]

Taarabt signed for Tottenham Hotspur on a long-term loan on 2 January 2007 after the club offered to integrate him quickly into the first team to offer him maximum playing time.^[4] Within two months he made his first senior appearance in a Tottenham shirt, entering as a 87th minute substitute against local rivals West Ham United, which ended as a 4–3 victory.^[5] He made a second appearance in the 1–0 loss to Chelsea, again as a second half substitute, playing as a striker.

Tottenham signed Taarabt permanently on 8 June.^[6] Upon signing for Tottenham he was hyped as the next Zinedine Zidane. He scored his first goal for Spurs in a pre-season friendly against Stevenage Borough on 7 July. He made his first appearance of the 2007–08 season with Tottenham against Derby County in the 4–0 win on 18 August, which he entered at the 70th minute.

At the beginning of the 2008–09 season, Taarabt was not given a squad number by then manager Juande Ramos, though he was given his old number when Harry Redknapp took over team management.

On 13 March 2009, he joined Championship team Queens Park Rangers on loan until the end of the season.^[7] He scored his first goal for QPR in a 2–1 win over Bristol City.^[8] His loan spell was cut short after he suffered a knee injury which required surgery.^[9]

Taarabt rejoined QPR on a season-long loan for the 2009–10 season on 23 July 2009.^[10] On 1 October, Taarabt scored a "wonder strike" in a match against Preston North End. He collected the ball on his chest inside the QPR half and dribbling 20 yards past three players and curled in a shot from 25 yards. This led Jim Magilton to label Taarabt as a "genius" and the goal is seen as one of the Championship's finest.^[11]

Tottenham confirmed in October 2009 that Taarabt could stay at QPR for the season providing that a Premier League club did not make a bid for him in the January transfer window.^[12] QPR were unable to make the transfer a permanent one because they could not afford the £4.5 million valuation placed on Taarabt by Spurs.^[13]

In March 2010, Taarabt was quoted in an interview as being sorry that he signed for Tottenham. He had said "The big mistake was to sign for Tottenham and not go to another club when I first came over". He stated that he wished he had signed for Arsenal instead but had opted for Spurs after Damien Comolli moved from being a scout at Arsenal to director of football at Spurs. He stated that he felt he would have been given more chances to play at Arsenal and was advised at the time not to sign for Spurs by his friends Armand Traore and Abou Diaby, who play for Arsenal.^[14]

Taarabt went on to state his intention to sign for one of the top clubs in Spain "I hope to be playing for one of the top four in Spain next season – Real Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia or Sevilla. I have contact with good teams and I know that they want me. Now I just have to hope they can agree a deal with Tottenham."^[14]

In January 2011, Taarabt was interviewed by the Evening Standard, in which he stated: "The man who took me to Tottenham was Damien Comolli. He was at Arsenal then. But, when I was going to go to Arsenal, he moved to Tottenham. He told me: 'Come to Tottenham. We want to do like they do at Arsenal and take the best young players in the world. You're going to have a better chance there.' I believed him. This was a mistake and I regret it. Tottenham tried to do it like Arsenal but it's a different culture. I would have had a better chance at Arsenal. I would progress with Arsene Wenger. He is a legend in France, one of the best managers in the world".^[15]

2010–2011 season[link]

Taarabt in Premier League

Adel Taarabt was to make his debut as a full Queens Park Rangers players as the club signed the Moroccan for a reported £1,000,000. This was proved to be one of the bargains of the season as Taarabt went on to score 19 goals and make 44 appearances that season for the West London club. With his unpredictable skill and reputation for never giving the opposition defense an easy 90 minutes Taarabt went on to win the Championship Player of The Year and gained a place in The Championships best XI (also featuring teammate Paddy Kenny.

However there were some bad sides to the season for Adel. During the 2 games that he missed ( against Doncaster Rovers, away, 1-0 to QPR, and Scunthorpe, away, 4-1 to Scunthorpe) he went back to France for Family Matters as one of Taarabt's cousins had tragically been killed by Algerians. This led to Taarabt acting angrily in the international match Morocco vs Algeria which he picked up a booking and was lucky not to be sent off. In the return fixture Morocco manager Erik Gerets decided to drop Adel to the bench. Taarabt decided to not even turn up to the international fixture and vowed to never play for his country again. However several months later Taarabt wanted to play for Morocco again which Gerets reluctantly allowed but said that if Taarabt acted irrationally again he wouldnt play for his country whilst he was in charge.

Some notalble moments during the season were against Cardiff City (away, 2-2 draw) where Taarabt picked up a brace, scoring a wonder goal during the process. Also during the home game against Cardiff where Taarabt scored the winner which took QPR back to the top of the nPower Championship. Undoubtedly he would never forget lifting the trophy at Loftus Road being the proud captain of the team.

2011–12 season[link]

The 2011-12 season marked Taraabt's first real foray into the Premier League, for although having featured in English football's highest tier as a Tottenham Hotspur player, he had never made a break through into the Spurs first eleven. The start of the season held much optimism for both QPR and Taraabt, yet this soon gave way to speculation that he would move away, and his name was associated with the likes of PSG and Napoli.^[16] This was coupled with the arrival of Joey Barton in the August Transfer window, who was immediately installed as captain at the expense of Taraabt.^[17]

These factors had the unfortunate effect of unsettling the player and he was unable to recreate his form from the previous season. By early November he had amassed a total of over 20 shots and none of these had resulted in a goal.^[18] Prior to this he had often let his temper get the better of him. During the 6-0 loss away to Fulham on 2 October he was substituted at half time, which apparently led to an argument with manager Neil Warnock.^[19] This attitude provoked criticism from his teammates, with Joey Barton being particularly vocal.^[20] Taraabt was again substituted at half-time for a poor showing in the 3-1 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur and was subsequently left out of the side for the games against Manchester City and Stoke City. During this period continued speculation linked him with PSG, and Warnock even admitted he would gladly accept an offer for Taraabt if the right offer came along.^[21]

Taraabt went on international duty and also had some minor injuries which also saw him left out of the side at this stage. Warnock was highly critical of the player's agents during this period and laid much of the blame for him being unsettled at their feet. He advised him to rethink the advice these 'advisors' had given him and stated "They won't make him better and I think it is a shame. Adel can always make money but he is better than that. I will be sad if he ends up going to make some money because I think he has great ability."^[22] Still left out of the side throughout most of November, subsequent injuries to his teammates saw a recall, however, and he was commended for his performance in the 2–0 loss to Manchester United on 18 December. He sustained this level of improved performance against Sunderland and Swansea City. On the 31st of March, Taarabt scored the first goal in QPR's victory over Arsenal, and was also voted Man of the Match. Taarabt followed up his goal against Arsenal by scoring a long range free kick in QPR's 1-0 victory over his former club Tottenham on 21 April. He was also shown his first red card in English football in the same game for a second bookable offence.^[23]

2012–13 season[link]

Wolfsburg are rumoured to be readying a £4.5-6M deal for Taarabt after refusing to match QPR's £8M asking price in January. His contract has one season left to run at Loftus Road.

International career[link]

Taarabt represented France at under-16, under-17 and under-18 levels, but opted to play for Morocco, saying "I felt the time was right when I was given this opportunity".^[24] On 11 February 2009 Taarabt played his first international match with Morocco in a friendly against Czech Republic in Casablanca.^[25] He also made an appearance on 29 March during Morocco's 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifier 2–1 defeat against Gabon.

Taarabt scored his first international goal on his first start on 31 March 2009 in a friendly 2–0 victory over Angola.^[26] On 6 September 2009 he scored his first goal in a competitive international match against Togo in the 2010 World Cup qualification after he broke through the opposing defence in stoppage time.^[27]

On 3 June 2011, Taarabt decided to end his international career the day after being dropped to the bench for an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Algeria.^[28] He reneged on that decision, returning on 9 October 2011 for their last qualifier against Tanzania. Taarabt scored a free-kick that would end up being the winning goal and sealing Morocco's qualification.

Personal life[link]

Taarabt is a Muslim and stated in an interview in June 2010 that this religion has had a significant impact on his life as a footballer:

"Being a Muslim has had a big impact on my professional life. As Muslims, we don't drink alcohol, we don't smoke, so essentially we've become healthier, more professional footballers because of our lifestyle. Before every game, I perform salah. Without it, I just don't feel confident. I make sure I pray after a match, too – to give thanks and be grateful for the stamina and strength God graced me with."^[30]

Taarabt credits his parents with keeping his religion in his life, with his choice to play professional football.^[30]

Judy Valerie Cornwell (born 22 February 1940) is an English actress best known for her role as Daisy in the British sitcom Keeping Up Appearances.

Biography[link]

Cornwell's father served in the RAF and she grew up in Britain where she attended a convent school, before moving to Australia where her family emigrated. She has written about her childhood experiences in her autobiography Adventures of a Jelly Baby. She returned to Britain, where she became a professional dancer and comedienne in her teens, working her act between the nudes at the Windmill Theatre before becoming an actress. Her long career includes roles in radio's The Navy Lark, the controversial play Oh! What A Lovely War, her own TV comedy series Moody and Pegg, and several seasons with the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Cornwell's film roles include Santa Claus: The Movie (as Mrs. Claus) and Mad Cows. On television she has appeared in Dixon of Dock Green, Cakes and Ale, Bergerac, Doctor Who (the episode Paradise Towers), several episodes of Farrington of the F.O., The Famous Five, The Bill, Heartbeat, Miss Marple and Midsomer Murders. Katherine Patricia Routledge, CBE (born 17 February 1929) is an English character comedy actress and singer. She is best known for her role as character Hyacinth Bucket (supposedly pronounced "Bouquet") in the British television series Keeping Up Appearances and Hetty Wainthropp in the British television series Hetty Wainthropp Investigates. In addition to her roles in British television, she has a long and successful career in musical theatre, as well as in film.

Early life and education[link]

Katherine Patricia Routledge was born in Tranmere, Birkenhead to parents Catherine and Isaac Routledge. Her father was a haberdasher, and, during WWII, the family lived weeks at a time in the basement of her father's shop. She was educated at Mersey Park Primary School, Birkenhead High School, now a state-funded Academy school, and the University of Liverpool. At Liverpool she graduated with Honours in English Language and Literature^[1] and was not on a path to pursue an acting career. She was, however, involved in the school's Dramatic Society where she worked closely with the academic Edmund Colledge who both directed and acted in several of the society's productions. It was Colledge who persuaded her to pursue an acting career.^[2] After graduating from Liverpool, she trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and launched her acting career at the Liverpool Playhouse.

Routledge has had a prolific career in theatre, particularly musical theatre, in the UK and the US. She has been a long-standing member of the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC), appearing in such acclaimed productions as the 1983 Richard III, which starred Anthony Sher, who played the title role on crutches.^[3] Her West End credits include Little Mary Sunshine, Cowardy Custard, Virtue in Danger, Noises Off, The Importance of Being Earnest, and The Solid Gold Cadillac, as well as a number of less successful vehicles. A classically trained singer, she has occasionally made forays into operetta; including portraying the title role in an acclaimed production of Jacques Offenbach's La Grande-Duchesse de Gérolstein at the 1978 Camden Festival.

Routledge made her Broadway debut in the short-lived 1968 musical Darling of the Day, for which she won the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical, sharing the honour with Leslie Uggams of Hallelujah, Baby!. Following this, Routledge had roles in several more unsuccessful Broadway productions including a musical called Love Match, in which she played Queen Victoria; the legendary 1976 Leonard Bernstein flop 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, in which she portrayed every First Lady from Abigail Adams to Edith Roosevelt; and a 1981 musical called Say Hello to Harvey based on the Mary Coyle Chase play Harvey, which closed in Toronto before reaching New York.

In 1980, Routledge played Ruth in the Joseph Papp production of The Pirates of Penzance co-starring American actor Kevin Kline and pop vocalist Linda Ronstadt, at the Delacorte Theatre in New York City's Central Park, one of the series of Shakespeare in the Park summer events. The show was a hit and transferred to Broadway the following January, but Estelle Parsons replaced Routledge. A DVD of the Central Park production, with Routledge, was released in October 2002.

Routledge won a Laurence Olivier Award in 1988 for her portrayal of the Old Lady in Leonard Bernstein's Candide in the London cast of the critically acclaimed Scottish Opera production. She also played the role of Nettie Fowler to great acclaim in the 1993 London production of Carousel. In a 2006 Hampstead Theatre production of The Best of Friends, she portrayed Dame Laurentia McLachlan. In 2008, she played Queen Mary in Royce Ryton's play Crown Matrimonial. More recent work include the narrator in The Carnival of the Animals with the Nash Ensemble in 2010^[4] and the role of Myra Hess in the play Admission: One Shilling in 2011.

Routledge's screen credits include To Sir, with Love (1967), Pretty Polly (1967), The Bliss of Mrs. Blossom (1968), Don't Raise the Bridge, Lower the River (1968), and If It's Tuesday, This Must Be Belgium (1969).

Routledge's early television appearances included a role in Steptoe and Son, in the episode "Seance in a Wet Rag and Bone Yard" (1974) as a clairvoyant called Madame Fontana. She also appeared in Coronation Street, and as a white witch in Doctor at Large (1971). However, she did not come to prominence on television until she featured in monologues written for her by Alan Bennett from 1978 (A Visit from Miss Protheroe) and later Victoria Wood in the 1980s. She first appeared in Alan Bennett's A Woman of No Importance in 1982, and then as the opinionated Kitty in Victoria Wood As Seen On TV in 1985. She performed two further monologues in Bennett's Talking Heads in 1987 and 1998.

In 1990, Routledge landed the role of Hyacinth Bucket in the comedy series Keeping Up Appearances. She portrayed a formerly working-class woman with social pretensions (insisting her surname be pronounced "bouquet") and delusions of grandeur (her oft-mentioned "candlelight suppers"). Routledge delighted in portraying Hyacinth as she claimed she couldn't stand people like her in real life. In 1991 she won a British Comedy Award for her portrayal, and she was later nominated for two BAFTA TV Awards in 1992 and 1993. The series ended at Routledge's request in 1995.

In 1995, Routledge accepted the lead in another long-running series, playing Hetty Wainthropp in the mystery drama Hetty Wainthropp Investigates, co-starring rising star Dominic Monaghan as her assistant and Derek Benfield as her husband. It first aired in January 1996, and ran until the autumn of 1998, with one special episode in 1999.

She has also played several real-life characters on television including Barbara Pym and Hildegard of Bingen.

In 2001, Routledge starred in Anybody's Nightmare, a fact-based television drama in which she played a piano teacher who served four years in prison for murdering her elderly aunt, but was acquitted following a retrial.

Radio and audio books[link]

Routledge's extensive radio credits include several Alan Bennett plays and the BBC dramatisation of Carole Hayman's Ladies of Letters, in which she and Prunella Scales play retired women exchanging humorous correspondence over the course of several years. A tenth series of Ladies of Letters premiered on BBC Radio 4 in 2009.

Having a distinctive voice, Routledge has also recorded and released a variety of audiobooks including unabridged readings of Wuthering Heights and Alice's Adventures In Wonderland and abridged novelisations of the Hetty Wainthropp series.

In 1966 she sang the role of Mad Margaret in Ruddigore, the title role in Iolanthe, and Melissa in Princess Ida, in a series of BBC radio Gilbert and Sullivan recordings. She took part in a studio broadcast of Tchaikovsky's opera Vakula the Smith (narrating excerpts from the work by Gogol) in 1990. In 2006 she was featured in a programme of the 'Stage and Screen' series on Radio 3.^[5]

She has never married and has no children and currently resides in Chichester, West Sussex.^[6] She was appointed OBE in 1993, and CBE in 2004.^[1] She is the current patron of the Beatrix Potter Society. ^[7]

Clive Walter Swift (born 9 February 1936) is an English character comedy actor and songwriter. He is best known for his role as character Richard Bucket in the British television series Keeping Up Appearances, but has played many other notable film and television roles, including that of Roy in the British television series The Old Guys.

Swift was born in Liverpool, Lancashire, England, the son of Lily Rebecca (née Greenman) and Abram Sampson Swift.^[1] His older brother, David Swift, is also an actor. Both brothers were educated at Clifton College and Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, where Clive read English literature. He was previously a teacher at LAMDA and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.

In the 1970s, he appeared as Doctor Black in two of the BBC's M.R. James adaptations: The Stalls of Barchester and A Warning to the Curious. He is most noted for his performance in Keeping Up Appearances, starring as Richard Bucket, the long-suffering husband of Hyacinth. He also starred in the BBC adaptation of The Barchester Chronicles and appeared in the Doctor Who story Revelation of the Daleks. On 25 December 2007, he appeared in a Doctor Who Christmas special as Mr Copper. He also played Sir Ector, the adoptive father of King Arthur in John Boorman's 1981 film Excalibur.

Swift was formerly married to novelist Margaret Drabble (1960-75). He is the father of one daughter, Rebecca, who runs the Literary Consultancy in London's Free Word Centre and two sons, Adam Swift, an academic, and Joe Swift, a TV gardener.

As well as acting, he is a songwriter. Many of his songs are included in his show, Richard Bucket Overflows: An Audience with Clive Swift, which toured the UK in 2007 and Clive Swift Entertains, performing his own music and lyrics, which toured the UK in 2009. He also played the part of the Reverend Eustacius Brewer, which aired on BBC 1, from 2002-05.
