Southern Steam - The Westerham Branch [1 of 3]
The Westerham Valley Line was a 4 1/2 mile branch from Dunton Green (on the South Eastern Main Line) to Westerham in Kent which opened in 1881 and closed as a result of fierce competition from buses in 1961. An early preservation attempt failed, and much of the trackbed is now buried under the M25 London Orbital road. This film was made in the summer of 1961, shortly before closure. Here we see an ex-South Eastern & Chatham Railway H Class 0-4-4T No. 31533 propelling an ex-London Brighton & South Coast Railway push-pull set along the branch, then call at Brasted Halt, Chevening Halt (now Junction 5 of the M25) and back for another view of Dunton Green as a rebuilt Bulleid Pacific storms past. We now switch to another film of the line. At Dunton Green on the penultimate day, we see a rare visitor to the line, ex-SECR L1 (31739) 4-4-0 on an enthusiast's special. The follwing day we witness the end of operations, as the "Westerham Flyer" takes it's final bow, propelled by an H Class 0-4-4T bedecked with a Union Flag on the smokebox door.

Westerham A Tale of Two Heroes.wmv
Westerham England was the home to two very famous men, Winston Churchill at his home, Chartwell and Maj Gen James Wolfe who beat the French during the Battle of Quebec in 1759. His victory is the reason Canada is British today. We visited Westerham, Chartwell, Tudor Rose tea house and ate at the the George and Dragon pub.

Grasshopper on the Green Westerham
Grasshopper on the Green stands in the centre of Westerham overlooking the green which was for many years the local market place. Please note that the pub is "on the Green" by the Churchill Statue. Grasshopper on the Green is run professionally by Neale and Anne Sadlier and their efficient team. The pub welcomes locals, tourists and walkers alike. At around 700 years old, the low ceilings decorated with antique jugs makes the lounge feel homely and friendly.

Spa Valley Railway - Westerham Branch Gala - 30/10/2011
50 years to the day after the closure of the Westerham Branch, the Spa Valley Railway recreated the line for one weekend only. Tunbridge Wells West becoming Westerham, High Rocks becoming Chevening Halt, Groombridge becoming Brasted and Eridge becoming Dunton Green. The weekend also saw the happy homecoming of L&SWR M7 No. 53, which was shedded at Tunbridge Wells West in 1965. A two train service operated throught the weekend, the Westerham Flyer between 'Dunton Green' and 'Brasted'. And a second train operating the full line.

An early preservation attempt failed, and much of the trackbed is now buried under the M25 London Orbital road. This film, made in 1961 on the eve of closure, begins at Dunton Green behind an H Class 0-4-4T and a push pull set. We proceed to Chevening Halt, Brasted Halt and the teminus at Westerham. In the next sequence, a 4EPB electric unit arrives at Dunton Green and we embark on another journey up the line. We call at Chevening Halt for a look around, and to witness trains in operation from the lineside. We then skip to Westerham for more views of this once extensive station complex. Next we see footage from the final days of operation, including L1 4-4-0 No. 31739 and Q1 0-6-0 No.33027 on entusiasts specials.

Southern Steam - The Westerham Branch [3 of 3]
The Westerham Valley Line was a 4 1/2 mile branch from Dunton Green (on the South Eastern Main Line) to Westerham in Kent which opened in 1881 and closed as a result of fierce competition from buses in 1961. An early preservation attempt failed, and much of the trackbed is now buried under the M25 London Orbital road. In latter days the line was operated in the main by former South Eastern & Chatham Railway H Class 0-4-4T tanks (one of which survives thanks to the efforts of those early, unsuccessful preservationists) on short push pull trains. This short film takes in Westerham and Chevening halt, concluding with a shot of a rebuilt Bulleid pacific storming through Dunton Green.

WESTERHAM PICNICS REMEMBERED (Sunrise by Llewellyn)
MUSIC, SUNRISE by LLEWELLYN " WESTERHAM PICNICS REMEMBERED " IN MEMORY OF DEAR MUM AND DAD. PLEASE TAKE A WALK WITH ME AND, RE LIVE SOME NOSTALGIC AND HAPPY CHILDHOOD MEMORIES. As a family back in the 1950s, we visited this area on many many happy Summer Sundays in Mum and Dads black Austin 10, for a picnic amongst the beautiful Oak Trees, followed by lots of kids fun. This place was paradise to us City kids back then.Today it is a time warp and has not changed at all I can clearly remember Dad parking his car amongst the trees that you will see, along with lots of other young families. These are the very same Oaks. And the memories came flooding back on that lovely October Autumn morning. please see my other video; STREATHAM CLOSE SW 16 THANKS FOR WATCHING
