In Conversation: W.V. Quine - Goldfarb Panel - Section 1
The Goldfarb Panel
Professor Warren Goldfarb is chairman of the philosophy department at Harvard University. He specializes in logic, history of logic and philosophy of mathematics and as translated and edited the Logical Writings of Jacques Herbrand. He has also co-authored with Burton Dreben The Decision Problem and Solvable Classes of Quantificational Formulae.
The program begins with a discussion of Professor Quine's early philosophical career at Harvard and considers his relationship with logical positivists, most notable with Rudolf Carnap. This background sets stage for a thorough discussion of Quine's naturalism, and in particular his naturalized epistemology. Questions about the famous two dogmas are raised, and attention is drawn to his doctrines of extentionalism and ontological relativity.

The Vienna Circle and Logical Positivism
This clip briefly describes the rise of the Vienna Circle and the ideas of logical positivism. The Vienna Circle had various members, however, this clip only mentions Moritz Schlick, Rudolph Carnap, Otto Neurath, and Kurt Gödel. It then briefly discusses the relationship between logical positivism and Ludwig Wittgenstein's early work (exemplified in his "Tractatus-Logico Philosophicus").
The main thought behind logical positivism was the notion that all worthwhile knowledge is scientific knowledge. This can be best expressed in their "Verificationist Criterion of Meaning." Simply put, there exist only two types of genuine knowledge: analytic truths that are true by definition (i.e. mathematics and logic), and synthetic truths that are true by repeatable empirical observations (i.e. physics, biology, chemistry, etc.). All statements that fail to fit into these two categories (i.e. metaphysical, ethical, aesthetic, etc.) are seen as emotive and cognitively meaningless.
Another signature aspect of logical positivism is a general disdain towards metaphysical speculation. While some positivists thought we ought to suspend judgment concerning metaphysics entirely, others felt provisional commitment to a metaphysics to ground the empirical sciences was justified. Consequently, a few promoted physicalism as a metaphysical theory that could provide unification to all of the natural sciences.
The clip also mentions Otto Neurath's idea of building a ship while at sea as a metaphor for an anti-foundationalist epistemology.

Filosofia3 Aula 24/1 Rudolf Carnap

Jedna z najważniejszych monografii XX w. w filozofii i naukoznawstwie (skrótowo: Aufbau). Carnap ujawnia w niej wpływy najważniejszych nurtów kulturowych, zwłaszcza modernizmu, i filozoficznych, jak neokantyzm, pragmatyzm, empiryzm czy woluntaryzm. Jednocześnie poprzedza i zapoczątkowuje dyskusje trwające do końca XX w. w obu najważniejszych nurtach: filozofii analitycznej i filozofii kontynentalnej. Tłumaczenie, opracowanie i wstęp Paweł Kawalec

In Conversation: W.V. Quine - Fara Interview - Section 1
Willard Van Orman Quine, Professor Emeritus at Harvard University, has been described as the greatest living English-speaking philosopher. In this series, he takes part in an in-depth personal interview, and a penetrating analysis of his life's work in six panel discussions with some of today's leading philosophers. In discussions with some of today's leading philosophers. In discussions on his most important theses, Quine defends his views against the major criticisms—past and recent—to bring his position right up-to-date. The result is a comprehensive, archival document which will provide a wealth of original material for research students and faculty, as well as a fundamental teaching resource for undergraduate courses.
The Fara Interview
Professor Quine talks to Rudolf Fara, Executive Director of the international charity Philosophy in Britain, about family background and his earliest philosophical thoughts. HE recalls his years as an undergraduate at Oberlin, graduate study at Harvard under A.N. Whitehead and his meeting with Bertrand Russell. He discusses his exposure to the logical positivists of the Vienna Circle, particularly Rudolf Carnap, and to the Polish Logicians of the Lvov-Warsaw School. The lighter theme of Professor Quine's likes and dislikes is explored, and finally, his is asked what question he would most like answered.

Partially Examined Life podcast - Carnap - Aufbau
What can we know? Carnap thinks that all the various spheres of knowledge (e.g. particle physics, attributions of mental states, moral claims, the economy) are logically interrelated, that you can in fact translate sentences about any of these into sentences about sets of basic, momentary experiences. This book, better known as the Aufbau, is Carnap's attempt to sketch out how this system of linguistic reduction can work. Though it certainly doesn't work, it's a pretty damned fascinating attempt.
Carnap's hope was to integrate the language of scientific discourse with that of mathematics, and in doing so clarify traditional philosophical problems, in part by showing that anything that can't be recast in this philosophically respectable symbolic language is a bunch of vague nonsense. So we can describe the relations between the various contents of our experience, but the question of what these entities really are (i.e. the traditional realism vs. idealism debate) doesn't and can't arise in the system. Carnap at some points described himself neutral about such questions, but at others as hostile towards the dead-end sort of philosophy that generated them.
You can find the entire unabridged Carnap podcast, along with dozens of others discussing philosophers from Aristotle to Wittgenstein, at the Partially Examined Life website: http://www.partiallyexaminedlife.com
About PEL: The podcasters were all graduate students in philosophy at the University of Texas at Austin back in the Clinton years. They all left the program at some point before getting their doctorates and have consequently since had time to get outside that whole weird world of academia and reflect on it and the various philosophical topics with a different, and probably much more lazy, perspective.
