Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings

Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings are an American funk/soul band signed to Daptone Records. They are spearheads of a revivalist movement that aims to capture the essence of funk/soul music as it was at its height in the mid-1960s to mid-1970s. In December 2014, the band was nominated for their first Grammy, in the Best R&B Album of the Year category for Give the People What They Want.

Desco: the early years

The original incarnation of the band, the Soul Providers, were formed in the mid-1990s by Philip Lehman and Gabriel Roth, AKA Bosco Mann. The Soul Providers began recording an album consisting of James Brown inspired instrumentals and vocal collaborations with Deep Funk recording artist Lee Fields. During these sessions Roth and Lehman discovered vocalist Sharon Jones after she recorded backing vocals for a Fields track. They were impressed enough to record a solo track with Jones entitled "Switchblade", a track that had originally been intended for a man to record. This track along with another Jones solo, "The Landlord", were included on the Soul Providers debut release Soul Tequila, released circa 1996 on the French label Pure Records (defunct). Lehman and Roth then started a new label in Brooklyn, New York. Desco Records was born taking its name from Desco Vacuum, a vacuum cleaner store in West 41st Street underneath which they utilized the basement as studio space and an office to administer and distribute the label. Sugarman 3 organist Adam Scone just happened to live upstairs in the same building. The Soul Tequila album was then reissued as a vinyl only LP renamed Gimme The Paw. The record, which featured Lehman's pet dog Spike on the cover, only kept one of the Sharon Jones collaborations, "Switchblade", omitting "The Landlord".

In some countries (like Israel), Sharon is a unisex name. It derives from the name the Israelite place name Sharon plain, referring to a fertile plain near the coast of Israel. This gives its name to a type of flowering shrub, the rose of Sharon. Sharon is one of many names that could formerly be applied to males (as in the 19th-century historian Sharon Turner), but is now nearly always used of females (cf. Vivian, Ashley, Beverly, etc.).

It began being used as a female name sometime in the early part of the 20th century, first being listed as one of the 1000 most popular names for females born in the United States in 1925. By the mid-1940s, it had become an extremely popular name for newborn American girls, remaining a top 10 name for most of the decade, peaking at #8 in both 1943 and 1945. Its popularity began to steadily decline thereafter; the name fell out of the top 100 after 1977, and out of the top 500 after 2001.

Daptone Records is a funk and soul independent record label formed by Gabriel Roth and Neal Sugarman and based in Brooklyn, New York. After the demise of the Desco label Gabriel Roth teamed up with Neal Sugarman to create a new label, Daptone Records. In addition to Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, Daptone has recorded and released the music of Antibalas, The Sugarman 3, The Budos Band, The Poets of Rhythm, The Daktaris, The Mighty Imperials, Lee Fields, Charles Bradley, Binky Griptite, and Naomi Davis.

The core of their music is the Dap-Kings. Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings features Sharon Jones on vocal, Gabriel Roth aka Bosco Mann on electric bass, Binky Griptite on guitar, Tommy 'TNT' Brenneck on guitar, Fernando 'Bugaloo' Velez on percussion, Homer Steinweiss on drums, David Guy on trumpet, Neal Sugarman on tenor sax and Ian Hendrixson-Smith on baritone sax.

The Sugarman 3 features Neal Sugarman, saxophone; Adam Scone, Hammond organ; Al Street, guitar; Rudy Albin, drums; Dave Guy, trumpet. Soul singer Lee Fields often sings with the Sugarman 3, and Daisy Sugarman plays flute.
