Ancient Precision Technology at Serapeum of Saqqara
The Serapeum of Saqqara is a serapeum located north west of the Pyramid of Djoser at Saqqara, a necropolis near Memphis. It was the burial place of the Apis bulls, living manifestations of the god Ptah. It was believed that the bulls became immortal after death as Osiris Apis, shortened to Serapis in the Hellenic period. The most ancient burials found at this site date back to the reign of Amenhotep III. In the 13th century BCE, Khaemweset, son of Ramesses II, ordered that a tunnel be excavated through one of the mountains, with side chambers designed to contain large granite sarcophagi weighing up to 70 tonnes each, which held the mummified remains of the bulls. A second tunnel, approximately 350 m in length, 5 m tall and 3 m wide (1,148.3×16.4×9.8 ft), was excavated under Psamtik I and later used by the Ptolemaic dynasty. The temple was discovered by Auguste Mariette, who had gone to Egypt to collect coptic manuscripts but later grew interested in the remains of the Saqqara necropolis. In 1850, Mariette found the head of one sphinx sticking out of the shifting desert sand dunes, cleared the sand, and followed the boulevard to the site. After using explosives to clear rocks blocking the entrance to the catacomb, he excavated most of the complex. Unfortunately, his notes of the excavation were lost, which has complicated the use of these burials in establishing Egyptian chronology. Mariette found one undisturbed burial, which is now at the Agricultural Museum in Cairo. The other 24 sarcophagi, of the bulls, had been robbed. A controversial aspect of the Saqqara find is that for the period between the reign of Ramesses XI and the 23rd year of the reign of Osorkon II – about 250 years, only nine burials have been discovered, including three sarcophagi Mariette reported to have identified in a chamber too dangerous to excavate, which have not been located since. Because the average lifespan of a bull was between 25 and 28 years, egyptologists believe that more burials should have been found. Furthermore, four of the burials attributed by Mariette to the kingdom of Ramesses XI have since been retrodated. Scholars who favour changes to the standard Egyptian chronology, such as David Rohl, have argued that the dating of the twentieth dynasty of Egypt should be pushed some 300 years later on the basis of the Saqqara discovery. Most scholars rebut that it is far more likely that some burials of sacred bulls are waiting to be discovered and excavated. eTN 2.0: Inside the Burial Chamber of King Ramses III, The Valley of Kings
It is November 13, 2013, and we are on day 6 of our tour of Egypt. Today we are reporting in front of King Ramses III's tomb at The Valley of Kings, one of world's most popular tourist attractions, located on the West Bank of Egypt. All week I have been saying it is business as usual here in Egypt, but the gripping reality is that it really is far from the usual business being normal. The harsh reality is that the people of Egypt in the areas that we have visited so far, with the exception of Cairo, the people of Aswan, Luxor and the tourist destinations along the Nile River are hurting. Hurting because their businesses and services are simply not generating the kind of traffic that they are used to pre-2011 revolution levels. Yesterday, as we pulled into Luxor, a merchant literally begged for tourists to buy his goods. It was difficult not to take pity to such a scene, knowing that Egypt so epitomizes the so-called trickle down effect of travel and tourism. I'm certain this begging merchant is one of thousands affected by the low number of tourists turning up in Egypt. Tourism is one the main economic pillars of Egypt, which makes it even harder to fathom what the people who depend on tourism for their livelihood could be going through in the last three years. To put it simply, no tourists mean no jobs for a lot of Egyptians. Apart from what you may think of happening in Here, it is an irrefutable fact that no single tourist has been killed as a result of the current political climate. The streets of Cairo are far from the usual relax atmosphere tourists have come to known and seen in years prior. But. the truth remains: Even in Cairo, tourists are greeted with a smile. Egyptians are courteous, curious and just as hospitable as they have ever been. My advice for tourists who have had some degree of interest in visiting Egypt is this: come. This is an opportune time to visit, as you are guaranteed to have a unique visit from those who have come before you. Your experience will be more pronounced, as Egyptians usher in this historic transition resulting from the Arab Spring phenomenon. Above all, you will be making a difference to those who are badly in need of you being here for their livelihood. EGYPT 533 - PHARAOHS of the XIXth Dynasty - (by Egyptahotep)
The XIX Dynasty: RAMESSES I : he was , the commander of royal archers. He held many weighty offices in army, he was later vizier and confidant of Horemheb, appointed by him as heir to the throne. As a vizier he ordered to build for himself a tomb at Gourab. After he had been designated heir to the throne he built for himself a KV16 tomb in the Kings' Valley. The king's mummy was found in Deir el-Bahari, his mummy is now in Luxor museum and his sarcophagus in Cairo Museum. Ramesses I ruled one year and 4 months, as co-regent with his son and successor, Seti I SETI I : Son of Ramesses I. After coming to the rule he was forced to undertake series of war campaigns to Asia and Libya. He made wars with Hittites, conquered the land of Amurru and city of Kadesh. In his 8th regnal year he made war expedition to the land of Jam in Sudan. History records of his warlike deeds add splendor to walls of many Egyptian temples. He erected magnificent temple at Abydos and a number of building structures all over Egypt, among others great hypostyle of the temple of Karnak, mortuary temples in Western Thebes and Memphis. He erected temple of Amun at Napata in Nubia, as well as in other cities. Many temples, destructed during Amarna period, were restored and covered with new reliefs and polychrome. He started building new capital of Ramessides in the Delta. Burial place of the ruler became the finely decorated tomb KV17 in the Kings' Valley. The king's mummy was found in the Deir el-Bahari. RAMESSES II :Son of Seti I by queen Tui. He had 7 legal, royal wives and 200 concubines. Historical sources record that he had 96 sons and 60 daughters. Ramesses II was regarded one of the mightiests (if not the one mightiest) Egyptian pharaohs. Certainly he is the best known ruler of ancient Egypt and a symbol of this land. Three facts went into the making thereof: tremendous building activity, traces of which can be found all over Egypt; active internal policy and presence of military force keeping strong position of Egyptian Empire as well as immensely long rule, comprising 67 years. He was crowned the king after his father's death in June 1279 BC. In his 4th regnal year he made first military campaign into Syria which resulted in relieving of the principality of Amurru ruled by Betneshina. The next year took place battle at Kadesh by Orontes. The course of this most famous in Egyptian history battle is recorded in wall presentations of temples at Abydos, Thebes and Abu Simbel, also in papyri and is called Poem of Pentewere. Egyptian sources present the battle as a great triumph of Egyptian army and pharaoh Ramesses II in person, Hittite sources - in contrary. The fact that in consequence the land of Amurru had been annexed to Hittites' influence zone allows us to conclude that closer to the truth are Hittite sources which record failure (if not complete defeat) of Egyptian army. Next over a dozen-or-so years Ramesses was making numerous war campaigns into Syria-Palestine, consolidating his own influence zone. Treaty made in 1258 with Hittites warranted in writing non-aggression and mutual relieving of political refugees. This is an oldest known historical document made between two foreign countries. In 1245 and 1240 BC to the royal harem arrived two Hittite princesses thus consolidating the peace with the land of Hatti. There are known to us expeditions to land of Jam in Sudan in year 21 of Ramesses reign and to Nubia in year 44, under command of Setau, the viceroy of Kush. Ramesses II reinforced fortresses in the Western Delta which protected from the "sea people" attacks and Libyan tribes. Building activity of the king exceeds that of any other pharaoh and counting out at least part of buildings erected or restored in his times seems to be impossible. There is no city in Egypt where the ruler would not have left traces of his building activities. Temples in Western Thebes (Ramesseum) and Abu Simbel are masterpieces of ancient Egyptian architecture. MERNEPTAH (or Meremptah):The thirteenth son of Ramesses II, his mother was queen Isetnofret I. The most significant event during Merenptah's rule was repulse of Libyans. Building activity of Merenptah focused mainly in Western Thebes and Memphis. SETI II: he was a son of Merenptah. Seti II founded a station for a barge on the courtyard in front of the pylon II at Karnak.Amenemesse Usurped him the throne. AMENEMESSE:he usurped the throne illegally by 4 years in times of Seti II. SIPTAH:was a Son of Seti II and Syrian concubine. In his behalf the rule was held by Twosret, his step mother. Another interesting figure of those times was chancellor Bay, usurping the right to the rule. TWOSRET:Wife of Seti II, step-mother of Siptah. The queen held rule as regent . She started even counting length of her reign including years of regency- published: 26 Aug 2013
