A Day without Child Care
The residents of Humboldt County, California, wake up one day to find that all their child care providers have mysteriously disappeared. The result? A good portion of the workforce has to stay home to take care of their kids! Chaos ensues. A solution is proposed.

Child Care Infant Care Nursery Day Care - The Learning Experience
Infants (Six Weeks to One Year) :: Our infant centers have been designed for maximum efficiency, security and safety. Toys are sterilized daily and changing tables are sterilized after each diaper is changed. Changing tables always face out so that caregivers never have their back to the babies. A thirteen step diaper changing procedure is strictly adhered to. In a warm and nurturing environment, our babies are cuddled, rocked and played with by carefully chosen caregivers. Each caregiver is dressed in clean, colorful hospital scrubs. For the protection of each baby, we do not allow street shoes and every adult must sanitize their hands before entering our infant center. Your baby will have a personal crib and cubbie where clothing, bedding, food and bottles can be stored away from other children. Nursing mothers are able to nurse on the center premises in a clean private area comfortably seated in a glider. Play is based on exploration, stimulation and sensory. Music plays a big part in this adorable nursery. Your baby will be in a very special place, because after all, your baby deserves a special place, like The Learning Experience.

Child 6, left in day care van overnight unnoticed in MISSOURI CITY, TX
Child 6, left in day care van overnight unnoticed in MISSOURI CITY, TX. It was a long night last week for a six-year-old boy in Missouri City after his parents say he spent the night unnoticed in his day care's van. The parents say they received the surprising call from the day care this morning. They thought their son was staying with a relative and were shocked to hear where he had actually spent the night.
"I'm calm right now because he's OK, but then, I was pretty upset," the child's father, Anthony Lennette, said.
Lennette says he's still outraged about what happened last week at his son's Missouri City day care, Southern Preparatory Academy.
"When his mom came to pick him up, they told her he wasn't there [and] he left with his aunt," Lennette said.
But Lennette says when the boy's mother called the boy's aunt the next morning, his aunt thought she was joking. He says it wasn't until the mother got a phone call the following afternoon that the family discovered the boy had been left in the van parked at a day care worker's home all night long.
"They called his mom and they told her they were sorry he was left in the van some kind of way," Lennette said.
Upset, Lennette says he went straight to the day care.
"They didn't tell me anything. One of them was saying she didn't know what was going on. The other one didn't want to tell me anything," he said.
We called Southern Preparatory Academy, but the director refused an on-camera interview. She did admit that the day care worker driving the van did make a mistake and leave the child in the van overnight and part of the next day. The director also blamed the parents for not calling about their child.
The day care owner said the van operator is no longer with her company and that the incident was reported to the state immediately.
The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services says there have been no major problems at this day care since it opened two years ago, but officials did note past concerns about supervision, child-to-worker ratio and the day care directors' roll.
The state agency says, "Child care licensing is investigating whether or not the day care center followed our rules regarding transportation. One of the rules says someone has to check when children get on and off the vehicle and the staffer must do a walk through after everyone has gotten off the bus because if not, it could be a tragedy."
"Of course, I would love an apology," Lennette said.
The father says his son deserves that apology more.
"I'm just glad my son is safe right now," Lennette said. "I will deal with that later."
The boy's parents said they plan to pull their son out of Southern Preparatory Academy.

Community Child Care Marketing
Child Care Marketing Idea of the Week:
An often overlooked strategy to fill your program with children quickly is what I call "good old-fashioned, 'pound the pavement' style community marketing." This is truly one of your most powerful tools for success -- are you using it effectively and often? Getting out, shaking hands, spreading your flyers all over town—these are the ways to connect with your community business potential and make valuable connections.
If you, as the owner or director of the business, are not doing this kind of marketing, you are missing out. Think you are too busy? Afraid to step out of the comfort zone of your office? Nervous about what to say to get the ball rolling? I challenge you to drop all excuses, make a plan, get out of your comfort zone and put this strategy to work!
An easy plan to follow to succeed at community marketing is to identify 3 or 5 (or, better yet, 10!) business associates with whom you could partner in your community. Get started with a few and build your 'partnering' momentum. Ideal partner prospects are those businesses that attract the same clientele or customers that you seek. For instance, here are some easy, sophisticated ways to tap your community potential:
• Who are the key Realtor or top relocation specialists—buyers' agents rather than sellers' agents—who are working with families as they move into your community? You can figure this out by driving around looking at the yard signs and seeing who has the most business. Then, once you identify the top ones on the signage, talk to the Realtor who will help you figure this out.
• Apartment buildings, especially new ones, are a great resource to connect to families as they move into your area. New renters can be tapped by your arrangement with the apartment managers to have special offers or coupons in the lobby or even inserted into mail slots (with management permission). Apartment managers are especially receptive if you offer a special value. You can easily code each flyer or offer, asking the customer to bring that in to your facility, to keep track and know which apartment complexes are your richest sources of prospects. Which ones are the more family-oriented apartment buildings? Simple coding helps you to figure that out.
• Pediatric dentists or pediatricians, especially those who you partner with to come into your center and do presentations about their services, can have your flyers in their offices to promote your center as a service to their clients, just as you promote their business as a service to your families.
• Do you have enrichment programs coming into your center, such as Itsy Bitsy Yoga, Mommy and Me, KinderMusic, etc.? These are perfect business partners for you to trade flyers and promotional offers.
• Hair salons and nail salons may be another source of your ideal clients. The back of a restroom door is a great place for an ad featuring your center. You have a captive audience to look at that ad! Work with the salons to arrange a trade. They could come in to do a quick free manicure for your moms, for instance. Don't forget kids' hair salons too!
• Toy stores are a no-brainer. These shoppers are your ideal customers.
• Craft stores, such as Hobby Lobby and Michael's have 'child and mom' craft time, and these are the perfect clients for your business. Think creatively and offer to co-promote their programs and your business.
• Join the Lions Club, Rotary and The Chamber of Commerce. These are ideal venues for reaching out to your community business partners.
Themed flyers and seasonal promotions—pumpkins, turkeys, all the holidays—as well as any special enrollment offers, are all ways for you to constantly refresh and renew your visible and valuable connection with community marketing partners. Many of you are not doing effective community marketing, and yet it is the most natural networking approach!

Childcare apprenticeships
Find an apprenticeship now: http://www.apprenticeships.org.uk
Ella, 19 is doing her Level 3 NVQ childcare apprenticeship at Treetops nursery in Dudley. She shows us around as the three to four year-olds get stuck into dancing, playing and getting messy with lots of paint and goo!
"Before I started my apprenticeship life was boring," she says. "I couldn't get a job with no skills or qualifications." Ella always wanted to work with children, so after a failed attempt at getting into hairdressing she did a course and took the plunge on a childcare apprenticeship. Now she's the proud owner of an Apprenticeships Award and is looking to become an early years teacher or a midwife.

Anniversary of Conservative Cancellation of National Child Care Agreements
Speaking in the House of Commons on Wednesday, February 6, 2013, Liberal Status of Women critic Judy Sgro lamented the seven-year anniversary of the Conservatives' cancellation of early learning and child care agreements -- worth $5 billion and negotiated by Paul Martin's Liberal government -- that would have introduced the first national child care system in Canada.

Childcare Plans Nursery Ratios To Be Relaxed.
The average British family spends over a quarter of their income on childcare - but the Government plans to ease the burden.Nurseries and childminders will be allowed to look after more children under Government plans to help parents battling soaring fees.
Staff will be able to take charge of six two-year-olds rather than four, and the ratio for under-ones will go up from three to four.
Under the new plans, a childminder would also be able to look after two babies instead of one and four under-fives rather than three.
Education minister Liz Truss outlined the changes, which are part of reforms requiring carers of pre-schoolers to have higher qualifications.
She argued that they would make childcare more available as well as improving its quality, suggesting this would help to drive down prices.
But critics branded the reforms a "recipe for disaster" which could put children at risk and cast doubt on the prospect of cheaper care.
One parent writing on Mumsnet said: "How can this possibly improve childcare standards? Common sense says more children, less attention per child no matter how qualified the staff."
Another added: "I fail to see how someone can care for four young babies adequately. I do fear it will lead to accidents or even worse, simply because nobody has that many eyes in their head."
Britain families currently spend an average of 27% of their income on childcare - the second highest proportion in the world.
Despite this, the quality of care provided in the UK is said to be behind other European countries.
Ms Truss told an event at the Policy Exchange think-tank that the Government wants to bring in graduate-level Early Years teachers.
An Early Years Educator qualification will also be created, requiring practical experience and at least a C grade in English and maths GCSE.
The minister declared that nursery staff had to be paid more to improve the system, citing an average wage of £6.60 an hour.
Easing rules on ratios will give nurseries the "headroom to pay higher salaries", Ms Truss said.
"We have learned from other countries that deliver better value and better-quality childcare. We have looked across Europe and beyond ...
"I have been particularly struck by the high status and trust afforded to childcare professionals in continental Europe."
She added: "Other European countries have taken a different approach on ratios. They think that the quality of staff is the most important thing.
"Whereas in England nursery staff may look after no more than three one-year-olds, in France they can be responsible for five - and there are no limits in Denmark, Germany or Sweden.
"That is why we are encouraging nurseries to use their professional judgment and enjoy greater flexibility."
Anne Longfield, the chief executive of families charity 4Children, said the proposals could "transform the early years profession in this country" and they were also welcomed by Ofsted.
But Neil Leitch, chief executive of the Pre-School Learning Alliance said: "We are absolutely appalled by this fixation to alter ratios ... This is a recipe for disaster."
TUC general secretary Frances O'Grady said the changes would "not reduce costs and instead risks reducing the quality of care".
Chris Keates, from the NASUWT teachers' union, warned that sacrificing appropriate ratios to secure higher pay levels and more qualified staff was a "flawed strategy".
"It is more likely that any increased revenues gained by reducing ratios will simply be diverted to increasing profit margins rather than to enhancing the pay and conditions of staff and the quality of provision for children," he said.
Shadow education secretary Stephen Twigg said: "This Government has created an affordability crisis by cutting support and pushing up costs for parents.
"Watering down quality is the wrong way to try to deal with the problem they've caused. Experts are warning this could threaten child safety and won't reduce costs. Parents will be worried.
"With a £1,700 toddler tax for families with two children, and 401 fewer children's centres, parents are being locked into inflation-busting cost rises while the quality of childcare is undermined."
