Tony Danza (born Antonio Salvatore Iadanza, April 21, 1951) is an American actor best known for starring on the TV series Taxi and Who's the Boss?, for which he was nominated for an Emmy Award and four Golden Globe Awards. In 1998, Danza won the People's Choice Award for Favorite Male Performer in a New Television Series for his work on the 1997 sitcom The Tony Danza Show.

Personal life[link]

Danza was born in Brooklyn, New York, to parents Anne Cammisa Iadanza (1925–1993) and Matty Iadanza (1920–1983), both of whom died from cancer.^[1] Matty Iadanza worked as a garbage man in Brooklyn.^[2] Danza's family was of Italian ancestry. He has a younger brother, Matty Jr. (born 1954), a Los Angeles restaurant owner.^[3] When Danza was 14, he and his family relocated to Malverne, New York on Long Island. Danza attended Malverne High School, graduating in 1968.^[4] In the first episode of his show "Teach: Tony Danza", Danza describes himself as a "bad student" in high school. Danza earned a bachelor's degree in history in 1972 from the University of Dubuque,^[5] which he attended on a wrestling scholarship. It was during his first year of college that he got the Robert Crumb Keep on Truckin' tattoo on his upper right arm. In a 1985 interview in Us Weekly magazine, Danza remarked, "I was playing pool with a guy who had all these tattoos, and I wanted to be friends."^[6] Danza sports a "Keep Punching" boxing gloves tattoo on his right shoulder.^[7] In college, Danza met and married his first wife. Danza was a professional boxer with a 9-3 record, with all of his fights, wins and losses, ending by knockout.^[8]

Shortly after his college graduation, Danza was discovered by a producer at a boxing gymnasium in New York.^[9] He then earned a spot on the television show Taxi. In 1986, Danza married for the second time, to Tracy Robinson. The couple separated in 2006 and filed for divorce on March 10, 2011.^[10] They have two daughters, Katherine (born 1987) and Emily (born 1993). In 2005, Tony Danza became a grandfather when his son Marc and his son's wife, Julie, had a son, Nicholas. In 2008, Danza and his son Marc published a cookbook, Don't Fill Up on the Antipasto: Tony Danza's Father-Son Cookbook.^[11]

Acting, show business, and teaching[link]

Danza is better known for his characters named 'Tony' in Taxi (1978–1983), in which he played cab driver and part-time boxer, "Tony Banta". On Who's the Boss? (1984–1992), Danza portrayed a retired baseball player working as a housekeeper and single father, "Tony Micelli."

Danza also starred in the short-lived sitcoms Hudson Street (1995) and The Tony Danza Show (1997), not to be confused with his talk show of the same name. He had a role in the TV drama Family Law from 2000 until 2002. He took his first role, a nonspeaking part as a poker player in National Lampoon's Animal House.

He was nominated for an Emmy Award^[12] for a guest-starring 1998 role in the TV series The Practice. His movie debut was in the comedy The Hollywood Knights (1980), which was followed by Going Ape! (1981). He received critical acclaim for his performance in the 1999 Broadway revival of the Eugene O'Neill play The Iceman Cometh. In 2002, Danza released his debut album The House I Live In as a 1950s-style crooner.^[13]

Danza hosted his own TV talk show, The Tony Danza Show, that was produced each weekday morning in his hometown of New York and was syndicated across the US. On May 9, 2005, during a go-kart race with NASCAR star Rusty Wallace, who was a guest on the show, Danza's kart flipped after Wallace accidentally bumped him.^[14] Neither he nor Wallace was wearing a helmet at the time. Danza returned to go-kart racing on October 20, 2005, to challenge IndyCar driver Danica Patrick, but his brakes malfunctioned and he skidded into a wall, unharmed. His daytime talk show ended in May 2006; the last live episode aired on May 26, 2006.^{[citation needed]}

He starred on Broadway as "Max Bialystock" in The Producers, from December 19, 2006, to March 11, 2007^[15] and reprised his role at the Paris Las Vegas from August 13, 2007,^[16] to February 9, 2008.^[17]

In September 2008, it was reported that Danza would host the 4th season of The Contender, which was filmed in Singapore and began airing in December 2008 on the Versus TV sports channel.^[18] In August 2009, it was reported that Danza would appear in a new A&E reality show Teach: Tony Danza, in which he would co-instruct a 10th Grade English class at Northeast High School in Philadelphia. The series was filmed during the 2009-2010 school year and premiered on October 1, 2010.

Judith Ellen Light (born February 9, 1949) is an American actress. Her television roles include Karen Wolek on the soap opera One Life to Live, Angela Bower on the sitcom Who's the Boss?, Claire Meade on ABC's TV series Ugly Betty and Judge Elizabeth "Liz" Donnelly on Law & Order Special Victims Unit. She is currently appearing on Broadway as Silda in Other Desert Cities.

Early life[link]

Light was born in Trenton, New Jersey,^[1] the daughter of Pearl Sue (née Hollander), a model, and Sidney Light, an accountant. Light graduated from high school in 1966 at St. Mary's Hall-Doane Academy, now Doane Academy, in Burlington, New Jersey. She graduated from Carnegie-Mellon University with a degree in drama. She recalled the university as "rigorous" and "amazing".^[2] Afterwards, she started out on stage, making her professional debut in Richard III at the California Shakespeare Festival in 1970, before moving to Broadway to star in A Doll's House in 1975. She also starred in the 1976 Broadway play Herzl. Light also acted for such theatre companies as the Milwaukee Repertory Theater and the Seattle Repertory Theatre.^[3] In the late 1970s, Light went through a real crisis after a period of not landing any parts.^[2] Broke, she almost quit acting, because she felt that she was not contributing to the theater.^[2]

In this period, Light was called by her agent to audition for an understudy role in the ABC soap opera One Life to Live. Never wanting to be attached to a soap opera or a sitcom, she initially rejected the idea, until she was told that she would have a daily salary of US$350.^[2] At the audition, she realized that "the format reaches a lot of people", and that she could thereby "make a difference" and "make money" at the same time.^[2] Instead of landing an understudy role, she was recast in the role of Karen Wolek, a role that had previously been portrayed by actresses Kathryn Breech and Julia Duffy. This role was quite lucrative for Light and spawned one of the show's most-remembered storylines; Light's character became a prostitute after she became bored with her life as a housewife. On trial, Karen saved her friend Viki Lord Riley from being convicted of killing her pimp by admitting to the entire town, including her faithful husband, that she had been a prostitute. In 1980, this won Light her first Daytime Emmy Award for "Lead Actress in a Daytime Drama Series"; the scene in which she confessed her guilt in court is held in such high esteem that it is used in acting classes to the current day. Light recalled:

"I was scared before those courtroom scenes. I was afraid to put myself out that much. With the agony of pulling it out piece by piece and having the prosecutor stick the knife in her gut, I couldn't help but let everything spew out of her."^[4]

Light won another Emmy in the role in 1981. She appeared in an episode of St. Elsewhere in its first season, called "Dog Day Hospital", in which she played a housewife who became pregnant for the 9th time even though her husband claimed he had a vasectomy. In an effort to punish the doctor who botched the job she took an operating room hostage though it was later revealed that her husband had not had the procedure.

After this success on daytime, she landed the role of assertive advertising executive Angela Bower on the ABC sitcom Who's the Boss. Co-starring Tony Danza, who played her housekeeper (and eventual lover), the show ran for eight seasons from 1984 to 1992. TV Guide has Who's the Boss? ranked as the 109th best sitcom of all time.

Light spent most of the 1990s starring in made-for-TV and feature films such as Men Don't Tell and 1997's Too Close to Home, which co-starred Rick Schroder. She also starred on the sitcom Phenom, which ran for only one season (1993–1994) before being canceled.

In 2000 she received critical acclaim when she starred on stage as Dr. Vivian Bearing in Wit, Margaret Edson's Pulitzer Prize-winning play about an academic dying from ovarian cancer.

Since 2002, she has had a recurring role on NBC's Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, where she plays Judge Elizabeth Donnelly, who served as an EADA and Bureau Chief in the Manhattan District Attorney's office before being appointed to the bench in Season 7.

In 2006 she landed the recurring role of Claire Meade, the alcoholic mother of Daniel and Alexis Meade, on ABC's Ugly Betty. The role earned her an Emmy nomination.

Light appeared in a May 2006 episode of Family Guy ("Untitled Griffin Family History") wherein she voiced a cartoon version of herself obsessed with former co-star Tony Danza and making out with a constructed dummy of Tony in her house. She also recently appeared in an episode of the NBC sitcom Twenty Good Years.

In 2007 Light starred as a radical Christian woman in Save Me an independent film. Light's character, Gayle, runs a Christian ministry known as Genesis House, which works to help gay men recover from their 'affliction.' She is challenged by the arrival of Mark, an ill gay man who reminds Gayle of her dead, gay son, and the movie chronicles the challenges of the two as they learn to accept each other as they are.

In 2011 Light was nominated for a Tony award for her role in the Broadway production of Lombardi.^[5]

Personal life[link]

Light is Jewish.^[6] She has been married to television actor Robert Desiderio since 1985,^[7] when they met while co-starring on One Life to Live. They have no children. She speaks French fluently.

Activism[link]

Light is a gay rights activist and helped former Who's the Boss? co-star Danny Pintauro in coming out. She has done work for many LGBT charities. She sits on the board of the Matthew Shepard Foundation and spoke at the 1993 March on Washington. In 1998, she had a library named after her at the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center.

She is also a prominent AIDS activist and played Ryan White's mother in the 1989 TV movie on his life The Ryan White Story. Also, she sits on the board of Point Foundation, a LGBT organization that provides financial support, mentoring, leadership training and hope to meritorious students who are or feel marginalized due to sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression.

On April 1, 2010, Judith Light joined Cyndi Lauper in the launch of her Give a Damn campaign to bring a wider awareness of discrimination of the GLBT community as part of her True Colors Fund. The campaign is to bring straight people to stand up with the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered community and stop the discrimination. Other names included in the campaign are Whoopi Goldberg, Jason Mraz, Elton John, Cynthia Nixon, Kim Kardashian, Clay Aiken, Sharon Osbourne, Kelly Osbourne and Jesse Tyler Ferguson.

Jennifer Love Hewitt (born February 21, 1979) is an American actress, producer, television director and singer-songwriter. Hewitt began her acting career as a child by appearing in television commercials and the Disney Channel series Kids Incorporated. She rose to fame in teenage popular culture in her roles in the Fox series Party of Five as Sarah Reeves Merrin, and films I Know What You Did Last Summer and its sequel as Julie James. Hewitt was born in Waco, Texas,^[10] and is the daughter of Patricia Mae (née Shipp), a speech-language pathologist, and Herbert Daniel Hewitt, a medical technician.^[11] Hewitt grew up in Nolanville, Texas.^[12] Hewitt received her middle name after her mother promised her college friend (named "Love") that if she had a daughter, she would name her after her.^[13] Her older brother, Todd Hewitt, chose the name "Jennifer" as a homage to a crush he had at the time she was born.^[12] After the divorce of her parents, Hewitt and her brother were brought up by her mother.^[14]

As a young girl, Hewitt was attracted to music, which led to her first encounters with the entertainment industry. At the age of three, she sang "The Greatest Love of All" at a livestock show.^[15] Just a year after that, at a restaurant-dance hall, she entertained an audience with her version of "Help Me Make It Through the Night".^[16] By the time she was five, Hewitt already had tap dancing and ballet in her portfolio.^[17] At nine, she became a member of the Texas Show Team (which also toured in the Soviet Union).^[18] At the age of ten, at the suggestion of talent scouts and after gaining the title of "Texas Our Little Miss Talent Winner",^[19] she moved to Los Angeles with her mother to pursue a career in both acting and singing.^[14] In Los Angeles, Hewitt attended Lincoln High School where her classmates included Jonathan Neville, who became a talent scout and recommended Hewitt for her role in Party of Five.^[16]

After moving to Los Angeles, Hewitt appeared in more than twenty television commercials, including some for Mattel toys.^[20] Her first break came as a child actor on the Disney Channel variety show Kids Incorporated (1989–1991),^[21] where she was credited as "Love Hewitt". She later appeared in the live action video short Dance! Workout with Barbie (1992), released by Buena Vista.^[22]

She played Pierce Brosnan's daughter in a pilot for NBC called Running Wilde (1993),^[23] which featured Brosnan as a reporter for Auto World magazine whose stories cover his own wild auto adventures. However, the series was not picked up and the pilot never aired.^[24] Hewitt later had roles in several short-lived television series, such as Fox's Shaky Ground (1992–1993),^[25] ABC's The Byrds of Paradise (1994),^[26] and McKenna (1994–1995),^[27] and finally became a young star after landing the role of Sarah Reeves Merrin on the popular Fox show Party of Five (1995–1999).^[28] She assumed the role of Sarah after joining that show during its second season and continued it on the short-lived Party of Five spin-off, Time of Your Life (1999), which she also co-produced.^[29] The show was cancelled after half a season.^[30]

Hewitt's first feature film role was in the independent film Munchie (1992).^[31] A year later, she achieved her first starring film role in Little Miss Millions (1993).^[32] She appeared as a choir member in Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit (1993).^[33] Hewitt became a film star after a lead role in the horror film I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997),^[34] which enjoyed great box office success ($125,000,000 USD).^[35] Hewitt and her co-stars gained popular exposure from the film. Hewitt will direct the film Wait Till Helen Comes (2012) based on the novel by Mary Downing Hahn.^[59] This will be Hewitt's feature film directorial debut (she previously directed three episodes of Ghost Whisperer).^[60] She is also set star alongside Ivan Sergei and Joel David Moore in the independent comedy Jewtopia (2012)^[61] and will star in the television series The Client List (2012).^[62]

At the age of 12, Meldac funded the recording of Hewitt's first album, Love Songs (1992).^[63] The album was released exclusively in Japan, where Hewitt became a pop star.^[64] Her explanation for her success in Japan is that the Japanese "love perky music. The poppier the music, the better."^[65]

After she joined the cast of Party of Five, she signed to Atlantic Records, who rushed her second album, Let's Go Bang (1995), out in October.^[63] The album and its three singles failed to chart.^[63] Juggling her music career with her acting career, she recorded and released her follow-up album, Jennifer Love Hewitt (1996).^[66] The album, along with its four singles, failed to chart and Atlantic dropped Hewitt, who did not return to the music scene for three years.^[63]

She recorded the single "How Do I Deal" (1999) for the I Still Know What You Did Last Summer soundtrack.^[67] The song became Hewitt's first charting single, climbing to No. 59 on the Hot 100 and No. 36 on the Top 40 Mainstream.^[1] It reached No. 8 in Australia.^[68] Hewitt also recorded a cover of the Gloria Gaynor song "I Will Survive", which features briefly in the film.^[69]

She appeared in the LFO video for "Girl on TV" (1999),^[70] a song which was written for her by a member of the band.^[71] She also appeared in the music video for the Enrique Iglesias song, "Hero" (2001), as the singer's love interest.^[72]

In 2002, Hewitt signed to Jive Records^[73] and recorded her fourth album with singer, songwriter and producer Meredith Brooks.^[74] The first single, "BareNaked" (2002), became her biggest radio hit to date when it peaked at No. 24 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 chart, No. 31 on the Adult Top 40 and No. 25 on the Top 40 Mainstream.^[75] It climbed to No. 6 in Australia, remaining there for two weeks,^[76] and reached No. 33 in the Netherlands.^[77] The song later featured in two episodes of Ghost Whisperer: "The Vanishing" (Season 1, episode 20)^[78] and "The Collector" (Season 2, episode 20).^[79] The moderate success of the single propelled the album to peak at No. 37 on the Billboard 200^[80] and No. 31 in Australia.^[81] However, it only remained on the chart for three weeks.^[75] The second single, "Can I Go Now" (2003), failed to chart in the US, while managing to peak at No. 8 in the Netherlands^[82] and No. 12 in Australia.^[83]

Since 2004, Hewitt has remained inactive from the music industry, but the compilation album Cool with You: The Platinum Collection (2006) was released in Asia.^[84] Another compilation, Hey Everybody (2007), was released in Brazil.^[85] In 2009, reports surfaced that Hewitt was planning on making a country album and was in the process of writing material for it.^[86] Jamie Kennedy, Hewitt's boyfriend at the time, said: "I really want to make her a new demo for her music, because I think she should do singing again. She's so good."^[64] However, nothing has of yet come of the reports and Hewitt has remained absent from the music scene.

In November 2009, Hewitt made a foray into comic books. Veteran writer Scott Lobdell scripted the 5-issue anthology, Jennifer Love Hewitt's Music Box (2009–2010), based on Hewitt's ideas.^[87] The series has been published by IDW Publishing, and has been compiled in a trade paperback.^[88]

Hewitt wrote a book entitled The Day I Shot Cupid (2010), in which she speaks of her experiences with love and dating.^[89] During a January 2010 interview on Lopez Tonight, Hewitt said that there was a chapter in the book about "vajazzling" her "vajayjay" (decorating her vulva with Swarovski crystals).^[90][91] Hewitt was attributed with popularizing the trend.^[92] The book became a New York Times Bestseller the week of its release.^[93] She announced via her Twitter page that she is currently penning a follow-up.^[94]

Hewitt has said that she has an allergy to nuts and carries with her a pocket-sized epinephrine autoinjector in case of an allergic response.^[95]

She has dated many high-profile celebrities such as Carson Daly,^[96] John Mayer, and Jamie Kennedy.^[97]

Hewitt began a relationship with Scottish actor Ross McCall, whom she met when he made an appearance on Ghost Whisperer in late 2005.^[98] After two years of dating, they became engaged in late 2007, while vacationing in Hawaii.^[99] Paparazzi photographs taken of Hewitt in a bikini at that time led to harsh criticism of her body by bloggers.^[100] Hewitt responded: "I've sat by in silence for a long time now about the way women's bodies are constantly scrutinized....What I should be doing is celebrating some of the best days of my life and my engagement to the man of my dreams, instead of having to deal with photographers taking invasive pictures from bad angles."^[101] Several celebrities supported her views.^[102] During her engagement, Hewitt reportedly said: "I’m getting ready to turn 30 and get married and all those things. In 2002, conspiracy theorist and former social worker Diana Napolis was arrested for stalking and uttering death threats against Hewitt and Steven Spielberg after "verbally confronting" the actress at the 2002 Grammy Awards, and the subsequent day attempting to pose as one of Hewitt's friends to enter the premiere of The Tuxedo.^[105] Napolis admitted to becoming involved in a shoving match with Hewitt's mother while confronting the actress.^[106] Napolis accused Hewitt, along with director Spielberg, of controlling her thoughts through "cybertronic" technology and being part of a Satanic conspiracy against her.^[107] Napolis was charged with six felonies related to the incidents.^[108] After a year of involuntary commitment, Napolis pleaded guilty and was released on bail with a condition that she was barred from contact with both Spielberg and Hewitt.^[109]
