Press Conference Introducing 7 Mercury Astronauts 1959 Part 1/3
Less than a year after NASA's birth, the agency introduced its first astronaut class, the Mercury Seven, on April 9, 1959. The press conference held in Washington that day introduced the world to a group of men who would become household names and genuine American heroes. Six of the Original Seven flew Mercury mission; Deke Slayton was grounded by a medical problem but later flew on the Apollo-Soyuz flight. The Mercury flights proved that humans could live and work in space, and paved the way for the Gemini and Apollo programs as well as for all further human spaceflight. more at scitech.quickfound.net The first Project Mercury quarterly report covers testing of Mercury spacecraft aerodynamics using models fired by a gun (at over 10000 mph) and in wind tunnels (mach 14), escape tower tests in wind tunnels and launch tests with the Little Joe solid rocket booster, Little Joe construction, boilerplate spacecraft drops from C-130 aircraft to test parachute systems, the first "Big Joe" test launch of the Mercury spacecraft on an Atlas launch vehicle to confirm reentry survivability (Mercury capsule brought to launch pad on a pickup truck), molding of contour couches for the Mercury 7 astronauts John Glenn, Wally Schirra, Alan Shephard, Gordon Cooper, Scott Carpenter, Deke Slayton, and Gus Grissom, spacesuit testing, side arm controller testing for the reaction control system, flight maneuvering simulator and human centrifuge training, Mercury spacecraft mockup at McDonnel plant in St. Louis, and early stages of manufacturing the actual flight article Mercury capsules, fabricating the inner and outer titanium fuselage layers and welding them together prior to installing the systems hardware (which was not yet fully developed). Ablative heat shield, navigation periscope, ground support equipment, communications hardware, trailers to hold GSE, are also covered, and final assembly of retro rocket housings, antenna canisters, and escape towers was underway. Project Mercury: Flight of Faith 7 pt1-2 1963 NASA MA-9 15min
video for embedding at scitech.quickfound.net Flight of Mercury-Atlas 9, carrying astronaut Gordon Cooper on the last of the manned Mercury missions. The spacecraft, Faith 7, orbited the Earth 22 times. Public domain film from the National Archives slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and mild noise reduction applied. part 2: www.youtube.com from "This New Ocean: A History of Project Mercury" 1966 ntrs.nasa.gov Thirteen seconds past 8:04, range-zero time, on the morning of May 15, 1963, Mercury-Atlas 9 lumbered upward the two inches that defined liftoff and thundered on toward its keyhole in the sky. Inside MA-9, Astronaut Gordon Cooper felt the smooth but definite push intensify as Faith 7 gained altitude faster each second. His clocks marking the moments in synchronization, Cooper shouted through the din of the afterburner behind him to Waiter Schirra, his predecessor and now capsule communicator at the Cape, "Feels good, buddy .... All systems go." Sixty seconds upward, MA-9 initiated its pitch program, and Cooper felt the max-q vibrations grow, but the rate gyros sensed greater lateral oscillations than the pilot did. Six or seven swings from peg to peg on his instruments, and the flight smoothed out. Two minutes and 14 seconds upward Cooper heard "a loud 'glung' and then a sharp, crisp 'thud' for staging" as booster engines cut themselves out and off. Then away flew the needless escape tower, and at three minutes after launch ...

Freedom 7 / Project Mercury - 1961 NASA Manned Space Program Documentary
NASA documentary about the early space programs of the United States, focusing on the sub orbital manned flight of Alan Shepard aboard the Mercury capsule "Freedom 7", launched by a Redstone rocket. Background information about this space flight from www-pao.ksc.nasa.gov The main scientific objective of project Mercury was to determine man's capabilities in a space environment and in those environments to which he will be subject upon going into and returning from space. A few of the basic flight problems included: The development of an automatic escape system, vehicle control during insertion, behavior of space systems, evaluation of pilots capabilities in space, in flight monitoring, retrofire and reentry maneuvers and landing and recovery.

Dragon 1/72 Redstone with Mercury Spacecraft model kit review
This video is an inbox review of the brand new 1/72 Mercury Redstone plastic model kit from Dragon models. This is an all new kit (the first styrene Mercury Redstone offered in 1/72 scale). It sells for about $24.00 in the US (available at some online vendors for closer to $20) and it contains decals to do it up as either astronaut Alan Shepard's Freedom Seven or astronaut Gus Grissom's Liberty Bell Seven. Parts count for the kit is low and quality looks good, meaning it should be a good kit for a novice builder to intermediate builder. It can be done as a decent model out of the box, but it needs some work to make it more accurate.

An Evening With Two Mercury Astronauts
The 2011 John H. Glenn lecture featured a moderated conversation with two of NASA's original Mercury astronauts: John Glenn and Scott Carpenter. Fifty years after the first human spaceflights, they shared stories about their selection as astronauts, the first human spaceflights, and their careers in and out of spaceflight. This lecture was presented in the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum's Lockheed Martin IMAX(r) Theater on June 23, 2011.

Second to Space - Freedom 7
An Orbiter film by Unstung. On May 5, 1961, Alan B. Shepard became the first American (second man) to space in the Project Mercury. Freedom 7 was a suborbital flight which lasted under 16 minutes, where Alan Shepard traveled 302 miles. This is a recreation of Shepard's historic flight on his Mercury-Redstone, Freedom 7. orbit.medphys.ucl.ac.uk

Queen-In only seven days
Jazz Lyrics~ Monday the start of my holiday Freedom for just one week Feels good to get away ooh Tuesday saw her down on the beach I stood and watched a while And she looked and smiled at me Wednesday I didn't see her I hoped that she'd be back tomorrow And then on Thursday My luck had changed She stood there all alone I went and asked her name I never thought that this could happen to me In only seven days It would take a hundred or more For memories to fade I wish Friday could last forever I held her close to me I couldn't bear to leave her there Saturday just twenty four hours Oh no I'm goin' back home on Sunday I'm so sad alone Written by John Deacon. Sung by Freddie Mercury.
