harvest stinging nettles and eating nettles raw!
www.permies.com Harvesting stinging nettle and eating some sting nettles RAW! A big nettle patch under a cottonwood tree. various ways of harvesting, including bare handed. Heidi Bohan, author of "The People of Cascadia Pacific Northwest Native American History" talks about when to harvest nettles and how to do an ethical harvest. Three of her students help out. Different kinds of gloves are used. The nettle "stingers" are under the leaves only. Apparently, some people sting themselves intentionally. There is also some discussion on drying the nettles and how dried nettles can last years. Nettles are nitrogen pigs and, in this case, the nettles are fed by bird crap.

stinging nettle as a farm crop - permaculture!
www.permies.com Michael "Skeeter" Pilarski is a popular permaculture instructor well known as a first class wildcrafter. Skeeter shows off a patch of stinging nettle he is growing intentionally. This is in the fall. He talks about getting three crops out of this patch each year. First, a crop of edible leaves; then a crop of seeds (urinary tract medicine) and finally a crop of root cuttings (prostate medicine). He says that he gets about ten bucks a pound for stinging nettle root cuttings and the small patch will produce about 35 pounds. Skeeter says that stinging nettles are a dynamic accumulator, accumulating iron and other minerals. Music by Jimmy Pardo

edible wild stinging nettle permaculture
In this video, Matt Berry of the Regenerative Design Institue (RDI) discusses the finer points of stinging nettle harvesting. Harvesting nettles can really adhere to the principles of permaculture by using the surplus nature has to offer. In many places, nettle is in extreme abundance and requires little or no input to grow. In this video, Matt shows us a particular type of sustainable wildcrafting technique. If you top the nettle at the right time when it is young and good to eat, more nettle will grow back. This can help the plant and increase the harvest. Nettle is by far the most nutritious plant in my garden, being a superfood with loads of vitamins and minerals, including chlorophyll and calcium. The poison in the stinging spines on nettles are rendered harmless by drying or cooking. You can also check out some cool nettle beer recipes in Buhner's Sacred Herbal and Healing Beers as well as figure out how to make lacto fermented nettle beer in Jessica Prentice's Full Moon Feast: The Hunger for Connection.

nettle-infusion
Susun Weed makes stinging nettle leaf nourishing herbal infusion. Stinging nettle (Urtica dioica) builds energy, strengthens the adrenals, and is said to restore youthful flexibility to blood vessels. A cup of nettle infusion contains 500 milligrams of calcium plus generous amounts of bone-building magnesium, potassium, silicon, boron, and zinc. It is also an excellent source of vitamins A, D, E, and K. For flexible bones, a healthy heart, thick hair, beautiful skin, and lots of energy, make friends with sister stinging nettle. It may make you feel so good you'll jump up and exercise. An infusion is a large amount of herb brewed for a long time. Typically, one ounce by weight (about a cup by volume) of dried herb is placed in a quart jar which is then filled to the top with boiling water, tightly lidded and allowed to steep for 4-10 hours. herbshealing.comJoin Susun Weed in the Catskill Mountains near Woodstock NY, view complete schedule of events at www.susunweed.com join the free ezine, register for the free online course Nourishing Herbal Infusions the Wise Woman Way, view the holistic links directory, ask questions at the Wise Woman Forum, join Herbal Healing Email group, visit five weblogs with Women's Health Q&A database, and so much more...join us at www.herbshealing.com
