World War II did not end on the battlefield, but in a courtroom in Germany. The Nuremberg Trials revealed the full scope of Nazi Germany's atrocities and ended in the execution of many of the top Nazi leaders. Follow the historic trials from accusations through executions. See how Nuremberg was the defining point for new principles in the laws of nations, with the war-time actions of defendants like Rudolph Hess and Hermann Goering the measuring sticks. Meet some of the men who were present at the trials, including the chief counsel for the prosecution, and hear how they planned the case against the defendants, knowing that the eyes of the world and the judgement of history watched their every move. And find out how the Trials established a new standard for atrocity "Crimes against Humanity." Related article

The lawyers of five people accused of planning the 9/11 attacks say the US wants to cover up the fact they were all tortured in secret CIA prisons. Pre-trial hearings are underway in Guantanamo Bay for the men, including the self-professed mastermind of September 11. The week long pre-trial now has to determine whether to allow them to freely say in court what happened during their years in custody. The live transmissions from the courtroom are also being covered by a 40-second sound delay. Lawyer and Retired Air Force Colonel, Morris Davis, though, thinks this policy is less about protecting the nation - and more about saving face. Colombian government officials and leaders of the FARC rebel group are due to arrive for peace talks in Norway, aimed at bringing an end to 50 years of conflict. The government wants to stop both the insurgency and drug trafficking by the rebels. FARC is seeking commitment to rural development and political representation. Both sides will have to agree to the terms of an amnesty for the fighters. Al Jazeera's Teresa Bo has been talking to one FARC commander in Cuba who says a ceasefire remains a key issue. The peace talks will represent the latest attempt by Norway to help broker a truce in a long-running conflict. The country has a track record of bringing enemies together, as Linda Nyberg reports from Oslo.

More than a year after Afghan forces in Lashkar Gah took control of security there are said to have been huge improvements in the Afghan National Police force. The part military, part civilian Provincial Reconstruction Team has also been working with the Afghan Uniformed Police, now a major focus to ensure they can run their own training programmes by the time ISAF troops leave. Building trust in the local community is key. In 2009 the PRT set up an anonymous Crimestoppers free phone line for Afghans and there are plans to make it country wide. This a police force that knows it has to develop quickly but personnel like Captain Namatullha Mail, an AUP Guard Segeant Major, are keen. He said: "We have had the training from ISAF and now we have confidence that when ISAF leave Afghanistan we will be able to take care of our duties ourselves." Until then the PRT will slowly be stepping back as the AUP work to reassure their local communities that they can keep them safe.

United Nations, New York, 24 September 2009: The Security Council, in a summit meeting this morning presided over by the US President Barack Obama, adopted Resolution 1887, which, among other things, calls upon the States that are party to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) to comply fully with all their obligations and fulfill their treaty commitments. It also calls upon all States to sign and ratify the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT). Todays meeting only the fifth in the Council's history to be held at the level of heads of State and government began with the unanimous adoption of a resolution by which the 15-member body voiced grave concern about the threat of nuclear proliferation and the need for global action to combat it. Although we averted a nuclear nightmare during the Cold War, we now face proliferation of a scope and complexity that demands new strategies and new approaches, said Mr. Obama, the first US President to preside over a Security Council meeting. Just one nuclear weapon exploded in a city be it New York or Moscow, Tokyo or Beijing, London or Paris could kill hundreds of thousands of people. And it would badly destabilize our security, our economies, and our very way of life. Website: www.ctbto.org Webcast: webcast.un.org
