The Pawnbroker Movie 1964 - Part 1 of 13
Based on a novel by Edward Lewis Wallant, this gritty story follows Sol (Rod Steiger in a breakout performance), a lonely camp survivor who has dealt with the destruction of his family by suppressing all emotion and cleaving to the philosophy that nothing matters except money. (His bedridden and dying friend Mendel describes him, to his face, as "the walking dead.") Sol cannot accept the friendship of his assistant, Ortiz (Jaime Sanchez), or of an equally lonely widow (Geraldine Fitzgerald). As the 25th anniversary of his wife's murder approaches, he starts to fall apart, and it becomes clear that what he really wants is to die. The film was considered shocking when first released, both because of its rawness and because of brief nudity. Time has made some of the dramatic touches seem melodramatic--especially the corny "blood on my hands!" final scene. But Steiger's performance is still remarkable, and, even after MTV, the sudden-flashback editing is a forceful technique. A high point of Sidney Lumet's career. Black and white, with lots of atmospheric trumpets by Quincy Jones. (1964)

The Pawnbroker (1964) - Rod Steiger / Sidney Lumet
The Pawnbroker is a 1964 drama, starring Rod Steiger, Geraldine Fitzgerald, Brock Peters and Jaime Sánchez. It was directed by Sidney Lumet and adapted by Morton S. Fine and David Friedkin from the novel of the same name by Edward Lewis Wallant. The film was the first American movie to deal with the Holocaust from the viewpoint of a survivor and earned international acclaim for Steiger, launching his career as an A-list actor. It was among the first American movies to feature nudity during the Motion Picture Production Code (Hays Code) censorship years and was the first film featuring bare breasts to receive the Code's approval. Although it was publicly announced to be a special exception, the controversy proved to be first of similar major challenges to the Code that ultimately led to its abandonment in 1968. In 2008, The Pawnbroker was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". Plot Summary: With the rise of Hitler, Sol Nazerman (Steiger), a German-Jewish university professor, was dragged to a concentration camp along with his family. He saw his two children die (one while riding in a cattle car) and his wife raped by Nazi officers in the camp. Now he operates a pawnshop in East Harlem, while living in an anonymous Bronx high-rise apartment. Numbed by his experiences, he has worked hard not to experience emotions. He is bitter and alienated, viewing <b>...</b>

The devastating experience and unrelenting memories inhibit Sol from emotional involvement with life. He has no faith in religion and less in mankind. Though he carries on an affair with a woman who was also a victim of the Nazi camps, it is without emotion and Sol grows increasingly bitter and callous, withdrawing still further from the world around him. As his small shop in Harlem is run with little care or attention, it becomes a convenient cover for a local racketeer. Finally, a caring social worker tries to appeal to his humanity, but Sol's emotional wounds may prove to be too great to overcome. Terence Blanchard : The Pawnbroker
From his brilliant "Jazz In Film" album (1999), here is Terence Blanchard's arrangement of Quincy Jones' "The Pawnbroker".from the soundtrack to the the 1964 film starring Rod Steiger. Note: There's a brief moment of nudity in the video, as there was in the film; this display of nudity in Sidney Lumet's film, despite Production Code prohibitions on the practice at the time, is viewed as a landmark moment in American motion pictures. Below is a list of the musicians on Terence Blanchard's "Jazz In Film" album. Terence Blanchard - trumpet Joe Henderson - tenor saxophone Donald Harrison - alto saxophone Steve Turre - trombone Kenny Kirkland - piano Reginald Veal - bass Car Allen - drums
