Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Airport, Nanded (IATA: NDC, ICAO: VAND) is a public airport located in Nanded, in the state of Maharashtra, India. On the occasion of the 300th year celebrations of Gur-Ta-Gaddi Samaroh in 2008, the airport was officially named as "Shri Guru Gobind Singhji Airport". It was inaugurated on 4 October 2008 by Union Aviation Minister Shri. Praful Patel and the then Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Shri. Vilasrao Deshmukh, with Kingfisher Airlines flying a special commemorative flight to Nanded airport using its ATR-72 turboprop aircraft.

History[link]

The Nanded airfield was built in 1958^[1] by the Public Works Department and has the distinction of being the first airport in the Marathwada region. However, it remained under-developed for many years being served only for a short while by Regional carrier Vayudoot in the early 90s. In April 2000, the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation took over the development and maintenance of the airport.^[2]

To push trade in the region, the Maharashtra State Industries Ministry initiated the process of modernisation of airports operated by MIDC in 2006. Tenders were floated to invite private parties to draw out a plan for airport operations.^[3] as a result of which, the airport was leased to Reliance Airport Developers, a subsidiary of Reliance Infra that undertakes project management, implementation and operation of airports, who currently operate the airport. ^[4]

Upgrade[link]

In 2008 the airport was upgraded at a cost of Rs. 940 million. A new terminal complex, complete with an apron measuring 290 m x 120 m was constructed on the north side of the runway to accommodate three parking bays for large aircraft with fueling stations and CAT V and CAT VI Airport Fire Fighting & Rescue Service.

Structure[link]

While the New terminal building, capable of handling 300 passengers at peak hours, featured six check-in counters, VIP Lounges, Departure and Arrival Lounges, Transit Suites & Snooze Cabins, Visitors Waiting Area and Cafeteria, the airside saw drastic improvements too. The sole runway was extended from 1375 metres to 2300 metres. Runway width was also increased by 15 metres to 45 metres, making it capable of handling larger aircraft such as the Boeing 737 and the Airbus A320. A new night landing system and airfield lighting system was installed along with modern Navigational aids.^[5]

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation awarded Provisional Aerodrome License to Nanded Airport in Public use Category on 5 April 2010 and Permanent License on 1 October 2010. Passenger traffic at Nanded airport in FY 2011 Q2 increased to almost 5,700 per month from 3,000 in previous quarter.^[6]

Nanded (Marathi: नांदेड; Punjabi: ਨੰਦੇੜ; Urdu: ﻧﺎﻨﺪﻳﮍ ) is the second largest city in the Marathwada region of Maharashtra, India. It is also headquarters of Nanded district in the Marathwada Division of the state. It is an important holy place for the Sikh faith and is famous for the Hazur Sahib Gurudwara. It is the district headquarters once very famous as district of Sanskrit poets. Nanded is a town of great antiquity and famous for Muslim Sufi shrines. This district of great antiquity is important for the Hindu faith and is known for the Renukadevi temple at Mahur (a taluka place).

History[link]

Nanded is one of the historical places in Marathwada region of Maharashtra State. It is situated on north bank of Godavari river. Nanded is a town of great antiquity. It is famous for Sikh Gurudwaras and Sufi shrines. It is said that during the Puranic days, many great personalities travelled through Nanded district. Nandas ruled over Nanded through generations.

Nanded also formed part of the Mauryan Empire during the reign of emperor Ashoka the great (272 to 231 BCE). The mention of Nanded is found in the Lilacharitra, a treatise written about 700 years ago by Mhaimbhatta. It gives the description of the idol of Narasimha in the town. Nanded was formerly known as Nanditat (Marathi: नंदितट) which is confirmed by the copper plate found at Vasim. Nanded District and the adjoining areas were ruled over by the Andhrabhrtyas or Satvahanas during the First Century A.D. During the fourth century A.D. Kandhar was the capital of the King Sogadev and at Nanded was ruled by the king Nanddeva of the Chalukya Dynasty. That the Rashtrakutas were ruling at Kandhar is established by the inscription at Krishnadev alias Khandardev found at Khandar. Kandhar (or Kandahar city) is also famous for Sufi shrines and Muslim philosophers. An inscription at Arahapur shows that some dynasty of the Rashtrakutas was also ruling over Degloor. Hottal, a place in Nanded District was the capital of the Chalukyas, Kakatiyas followed by the Yadavas of Devgiri were the last the Hindu dynasties to have ruled of this part. During the very first invasion by the Muslims this territory subjugated to them and after a few years it became a part of the fief of Malik Kafur, the general of Alauddin Khilji.

With the advent of the Bahamanis, the southern country or the Deccan was divided into four parts or the subhas and Nanded was included in the Subha of Telangana. The famous Vazir or the Prime Minister of the Bahamanis Mahmud Gavan divided the Kingdom into subhas with Nanded forming part of Mahur Balaghat. Resided at Nanded and Kandhar for many days and the Vazirabad part of Nanded town was established by him.

Nanded was the capital of the district of Telangana. When Aurangzeb was appointed the Subhedar of the Deccan. Bidar was the Headquarters of the Subha and named as Ahmadabad. The Subha of Bidar was divided into six sarkars and 76 mahals and Nanded was one of the Sarkars of that subha. In 1708, the year following the death of Aurangzeb, Guru Gobind Singh the tenth spiritual leader of the Sikhs came over to Nanded, his permanent abode. He proclaimed himself the last living Guru and established the Guru Granth Sahib as the eternal Guru of the Sikhs. This elevates the reverence of Granth to that of a living Guru. A monument has been constructed at place where he breathed his last. Maharaja Ranjit Singh's endowment saw the construction of a beautiful Gurudwara at Nanded around 1835 AD. The Gurudwara features an imposing golden dome with intricate carvings and a breathtakingly beautiful artwork. It is known as Takhat Sachkhand Sri Hazur Abchalnagar Sahib.

Nanded became the part of the Hyderabad State in 1725 when the Nizam permanently opted for the Deccan and continued to be part of Nizam's dominions until 1948. With India getting freedom in 1947 and the consequent Police Action ^[2]against the Hyderabad State and invasion by the Indian Armed Forces, the district forming part of the Marathwada region of the Hyderabad state became part of the bilingual Bombay State. Consequently upon the creation of Maharashtra in 1956, the district continues to form part of the state of Maharashtra.

Nanded is the second largest city in Marathawada after Aurangabad. Latur and Parbhani districts are to the west of Nanded district; Yavatmal district lies in the north. The state of Andhra Pradesh lies to the east and Karnataka state to the south. Nanded district is amongst the large districts in the state having 15 Talukas. The river Godavari flows through the city. Temples and ghats on the banks of Godavari have made Nanded one of the holiest places for Hindus.

As of the^[update] 2011 census, Nanded had a population of 550,564.^[1] The municipality had a sex ratio of 924 females per 1,000 males and 12.4% of the population were under six years old.^[1] Effective literacy was 87.40%; male literacy was 92.68% and female literacy was 81.74%.^[1]

Nanded-Waghala City Municipal Corporation (NWCMC) was established on 26 March 1997. The Corporation is constituted under the provisions of Bombay Provincial Municipal Corporations Act, 1949 and is also governed by the provisions of 74th Constitutional Amendments Act 1992(CAA).

In addition with the Waghala Municipal Council, Vasarni Village, Kautha Village, Asarjan Village, Fatehjangpur Village, Asadwan Village, and CIDCO and HUDCO colonies areas were merged with the NWCMC. The total area under the NWCMC jurisdiction is 51.76 km², (5,176.66 Ha).

Nanded City is divided in two parts: Old Nanded (20.62 km²) north of the Godavari river (on the left bank) and New Nanded (31.14 km²) comprising Waghala and six other newly merged villages and CIDCO area, south of the Godavari river. Recently Taroda (Budruk & Khurd) has been included in Nanded Municipal Corporation.

Nanded Airport is well connected to Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Goa, Jaipur and Nagpur. The city has daily flight service to Mumbai, Aurangabad, Nagpur, Trivandrum & Delhi. Nearest international airport is Hyderabad(284 kilometre). Nanded has the distinction of having Marathwada region's first airport. As a part of JNNURM mission and Guru Ta Gaddi programe held in October 2008, it has been renovated and named as 'Shri Guru Gobind Singh ji Airport' and was re-inaugurated on 4 October 2008.

The Go Air is driving its flights to Mumbai/ Delhi & Nanded. Recently Kingfisher Co. has suspended some of its flights from Nanded to Mumbai and Delhi. Spicejet has started flights to Aurangabad, Mumbai, Delhi & Trivandrum.

The airport has been upgraded at a cost of Rs. 940 million and the facilities available include a huge terminal building to handle 300 passengers and a runway to handle big aircraft like Boeing 737s and Airbus 319-320. It also now has three parking bays for large aircraft, six check-in counters, plush passenger terminals, fuelling stations and all other passenger and flight operations facilities, including night operations.

Nanded has received massive investment in infrastructure development.

Rail[link]

The direct trains are available to Nanded from Mumbai, Hyderabad, Delhi, Amritsar, Pune, Bangalore, Nagpur, Visakhapatnam, Kolkata, Tirupati, Patna, Sambalpur, Rameswaram, Thiruvananthapuram . Soon Nanded will be a railways junction as a new rail line from Nanded-Yawatmal-Wardha connecting further to Nagpur has been announced and the work has started from February, 2009.

Nanded (NED) is the Divisional Headquarters of Nanded Division of South Central Railway (SCR) zone of the Indian Railways. The entire Nanded Division was a part of Hyderabad Division. In 2003, Nanded Division was carved from Hyderabad Division for administrative reasons.

Nanded is situated at 651 kilometre away in south-east from Mumbai by road . It is on National Highway No.222 connecting Mumbai to Nirmal (NH7) in A.P. and about six-hour drive from Aurangabad, Hyderabad and 11-hour drive from Pune. Several passenger bus services operate from Nanded providing easy overnight connectivity with almost every major city in Maharashtra. These buses are reasonably priced and fairly punctual. The comfort level differs greatly from operator to operator.

National Highway 222 (NH222) passes through Nanded. NH 222 connects the city of Kalyan near Mumbai in Maharashtra to Nirmal near Adilabad in Andhra Pradesh. This is one of the longest highway in Maharashtra.

Off late, Nanded has emerged as a favorite choice for industries and businesses in the country. This may be due to its geographical location, being on the border of two states, i.e., Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Another reason could be that, Aurangabad, which was known to be one of the fasest growing cities of India is now saturated. Also, Nanded is well connected with almost all major cities in India either by Road, Rail or Air. Presently industries such as Textile, Sugar, Drug and Chemicals run in Nanded.

Recently, there was a trade fair organized by the District Authorities which got a good response. Many renowned Corporates have started working on establishing their units in Nanded. Nanded is a hub of Agriculture and allied industry also, mainly Cotton, Banana and Food Processing among others.

Nanded is one of the biggest agricultural trading markets in India and second in Maharashtra after Navi Mumbai.

Nanded city's industrial estate has number of solvent plants in which DOC is produced and some of these solvent plants exports it to some foreign companies. These solvent plants also play a vital role in economy of Nanded.

Tata Chemical in support with the Pune based ethenol maker Praj Industries have set up a state of the art ethynol plant at the Krushnoor Five Star MIDC near Nanded. Parsvnath SEZ (PSL), a subsidiary of Parsvnath Developers, is developing a pharmaceutical special economic zone (SEZ) at Nanded by way of a special purpose vehicle in a joint venture (JV) with Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) over 370 acres (1.5 km²) in the Krushnoor Industrial Area of Nanded. This SEZ is aimed at providing world class infrastructure to revive the interest amongst many players from the pharmaceutical sector and will serve as a big boon for the Nanded's economic growth. Also the MIDC has big plant like Jai Corp, Flamingo pharma, Mauritioun co. Welspun is going to make 1200 crores investment here, Videocon to open 1000 capacity BPO, Tata Steel and many more are also interested in the city. Its evident that Nanded soon going to be regional hub for industries.

Due to this now all other ancillary sectors such as Insurance, Banking and mainly construction are flourishing. All major Banks and Financial Institutions have their presence here and many residential townships are coming all around the city.

Culture[link]

Nanded has a cosmopolitan culture as five major communities (Hindu, Muslim, Buddhist, Sikh and Jain) have resident in the city, it reflects the real culture of the India where people live together with great happiness though they are from different culture, state, language, community, etc. The great example of this is a recent function held at Nanded on the occasion of “Guru Ta Gaddi”. Where everybody was involved and working together even they are from different religions to make it a great success and it has been proven also.

Nanded has a great cultural heritage. It is the place of birth of the Saint poets like Vishnupant Sesa and Raguhunath Sesa and Vaman Pandit besides being a Centre for learning Sanskrit.

Nanded has been home to several well known Marathi Cultural figures. Mr. W. R. Kant, a well known Marathi Poet calls Nanded his home. The late Mr. Narhar Ambadas Kurundkar is another well recognized literary figure.

Nanded has been a venue of several literary and artistic meets such as Marathi Sahitya Sammelan, Marathi Natya Samellan. Late Mr. Tryambak Vasekar from Nanded is also a recognized figure in the area of paintings.

Though mall culture is not a new concept in India, it is still taking place in Nanded. BIG Cinemas has renovated the Jyoti Chitramandir as Jyoti BIG Cinemas, a two screen multiplex theatre in the city. Also Nanded has got a shopping mall called Treasure Bazaar. The mall hosts PVR Cinemas, one of India's leading multiplex chain with four screen multiplex and a three star business hotel.

Nanded is heading towards becoming a Modern Indian City.

Demography[link]

Due to its location and history, Nanded is more diverse than its appears. About 70% population is Hindu, 12% Muslim. Another 17% is Punjabi/Hindi speaking Sikhs. And rest 1% are from other parts of India. Also there is substantial amount of Kannada and Telugu speakers.

Nanded is home to various communities migrated from all over India. Most of the businesses are run by Marwari (Rajasthani) community and Arya Vaishya Komti (Migrants from South). In addition it has Gujrati (Hindu and Bohra-Muslim), Sindhi, Punjabi, Tamil and South Indian Christian minorities. As a result of this microcosm, Nandedites tend to speak a peculiar version of Dakhani Urdu influenced version of Hindi on street in addition to its main language Marathi.

Nanded has most circulated & "B" grade newspaper certified by Maharashtra State Government Marathi Swarajya weekly in Marathi Language. Nanded has ten Urdu daily newspapers. The Nanded Times is the most circulated Urdu daily of the city.

Hot Weather in April and May. Heavy rains in August and September, whereas frost in December–January. It experiences all three extreme weathers.

The city is surrounded by hills and river Godavari, Aasna and Purna from all directions.

Climate Classification: Nanded has a semiarid climate under the Koppen climate classification.

Temperature: Annual temperatures in Nanded range from 9 to 44 °C, with the most comfortable time to visit in the winter - October to February. The highest maximum temperature ever recorded was 48 °C in May 2009. The lowest recorded temperature was 2 °C (36 °F) on in the year 1911. In the cold season, the district is sometimes affected by cold waves in association with the eastward passage of western disturbances across north India, when the minimum temperature may drop down to about 2 °C to 4 °C (35.6 °F to 39.2 °F).^[6]

Rainfall: Most of the rainfall occurs in the monsoon season from June to September. Average annual rainfall is 725 mm.

As The Tenth (last bodily Sikh Guru) Guru Gobind Singh Jee stayed about three months in Nanded at the banks of the holy Godavari river, the city has several Gurudwaras where some historical events took place. Basit Ali (Urdu: باسط علی) (born December 13, 1970, Karachi, Sindh) is a former Pakistani cricketer who played in 19 Tests and 50 ODIs from 1993 to 1996. He was recognized by many to have a similar batting style as Javed Miandad. A right-hander, he has the relatively uncommon statistic of having a higher ODI than Test batting average. Strong through the covers and point, Ali was also a nerveless hooker and puller against the fast bowlers.

Ali was a successful junior cricketer, at one time holding the record for most hundreds in a Karchi zonal league season[2]. He debuted for Pakistan aged 22 in March 1993, playing both ODI and Test cricket in a tour of the Caribbean. For similarities and batting styles and temperament, he was initially seen as the one who'd take the mantle of Pakistani batting from Javed Miandad. He went on to play in 19 Tests but made just the one Test century, against New Zealand in 1993-94.

An aggressive risk taker, he was a regular in the Pakistani ODI side for a while in the mid 90's. In November 1993 he scored the then second fastest One Day International century in history, with a 67 ball effort against the West Indies at Sharjah. He took 5 more balls as compared to the record of Mohammad Azharuddin who took 62 balls. Basit Ali finished on 127 not out. He became involved in the Pakistani match fixing scandal which ended the career of Saleem Malik. Ali and Rashid Latif accused Pakistani players of match-fixing as well as facing allegations against themselves[3]. He was forced into a premature retirement.
