The flying "Heel Lift" - Arup S2 and S4 flying wings
A podiatrist from South Bend, Indiana, was responsible for one of the more distinctive and successful tailless designs of the Depression. Dr. CL Snyder, intrigued with the flying qualities of a felt heel lift that he had idly tossed through the air one day in 1926, pursued his idea from the primitive model stage to unpowered and powered gliders, and finally to several highly successful disc-type aircraft. Dr. Snyder's goal was to develop the flying wing for air transport purposes. He envisioned an aircraft with a wing 15 feet thick with a 100-foot span and a 100-foot chord. The passengers were to be seated in the wing with a clear view forward through the plastic leading edge of the wing. Snyder's early glider experiments led to the formation of the Arup Manufacturing Corporation in 1932 to refine his initial experimental configuration to a practical aircraft. Aided by the engineering skills of Raoul Hoffman and with Glenn Doolittle (racing pilot Jimmie Doolittle's cousin) acting as test pilot, Dr. Snyder produced three more variations of the basic disc-shaped Arup S-1 powered glider. Of the three, Arup S-2 and S-4 proved to be more durable and practical, making hundreds of flights during the mid-1930s, including impressive demonstration flights for the NACA, CAA, and the Army. The Arup experienced an accident-free service life. Some of its pronounced advantages over more conventional aircraft were greater lift and safety, increased cruising range, lower takeoff and ...

Season's Greetings from Arup
Arup's 2010 global 'happy holidays' card. This year, the global card design was given to Havering College in the UK, which one of our graphic designers, Terry Nicholls, used to attend. The course tutor set the 'design competition' as a module for the student's course. They were given a brief, and their designs were presented back to Terry. Working on a live project that would be used in the 'outside world' was an exciting prospect for the students involved, and many fantastic ideas were developed. A huge thank you to Simon Grove, this year's winner. We hope you enjoy the animation!

How Arup designed Sky TV HQ - Harlequin 1, a sustainable TV centre
In 2008 SKY commissioned Arup Associates to design Harlequin 1, a state of the art broadcasting HQ at their Osterley site in West London. The building needed to house 8 television studios and post production and transmission facilities for all Sky's sport and news content. Sky's target was to reduce the building's energy consumption by 20% and generate 20% onsite energy making it Europe's most sustainable broadcasting facility. This is the third film in a series of sustainability stories from Building in association with Dulux Trade Contract Partnership. As part of its industry leading sustainability programme, "Step Towards Greener", Dulux Trade Contract Partnership has invited a number of well recognised experts to share their sustainability journeys with you. Listen and learn how they have set challenges, identified solutions, engaged team members and inspired others. More information - www.building.co.uk

Arup Park(ing) Day 2011
In September 2011 Arup in Sydney took over a parking spot in support of PARK(ing) Day, an annual worldwide celebration of people and open space. We asked passers-by to tell us what they wanted from their city and add to our collection of aspirational drawings for the city. Making cities more liveable and healthy were amongst the main messages from our time on the street.
