Make Quantum Dots (Cadmium Selenide Type)
In this video we make cadmium selenide quantum dots. WARNING: This experiment uses toxic and carcinogenic reagents and directly handles extremely hot liquids. Gloves, protective clothing and a fume hood should be used. This should be performed by, or under the direct supervision of, an experienced chemist. Make trioctylphosphine selenide solution: Combine 30mg of pure selenium powder, 5mL of 1-octadecene and 0.4mL of trioctylphosphine. Gently heat it until all the selenium dissolves into a clear liquid. Once it's ready, take off heating, seal it and let it cool. Make quantum dots: Combine 13mg of cadmium oxide, 0.6mL of oleic acid and 10mL of 1-octadecene. Heat the mixture until the cadmium oxide completely dissolves to form cadmium oleate. After the cadmium oxide dissolves keep heating until the mixture hits 225 degrees celsius. Inject 1mL of the trioctylphosphine selenide solution from before and shake. Quickly withdraw small ~0.5mL portions of liquid and quench by placing it into vials at room temperature. A more narrow particle size distribution can be obtained if the vials are cooled on dry ice. The first several portions should be removed as fast as possible. The remaining portions may be withdrawn when there is a visible color change. What's happening is the cadmium oleate is reacting with the trioctylphosphine selenide to form cadmium selenide. These particles start small but grow in size the longer the solution reacts. Now this growth only continues if the ...

Millions of Fish Die From Cadmium Pollution in Guangxi, China
For more news and videos visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Add us on Facebook ☛ on.fb.me A river in China's Guangxi region was recently polluted with cadmium, a cancer-causing chemical. Local officials estimate that more than 88-thousand pounds of fish have died from poisoning and they are carrying out an investigation. In China's Guangxi Autonomous Region, millions of fish were found dead in Longjiang River on January 15. Cadmium pollution has been confirmed as the cause. Investigations are still underway. [Li Li, Vice Mayor of Hechi City]: "1.33 million small fish and 40000 kilograms of adult fish were found dead on Thursday in a section of the river from Lalang to Sancha. 237 households of farmers and their 758 net cages have been affected." Samples from the water indicated high levels of cadmium. Over 154 melting companies along the river are under suspicion. [Li Li, Vice Mayor of Hechi City]: "We are still carrying out thorough investigation over these firms one by one. We have blocked out the source of the contamination although the investigation is still underway. It can not be done overnight." So far, a total of 17 suspects from two companies—the Guangxi Jinhe Mining Co. Ltd. and Hongquanlide Powder Factory—have been singled out for the damage. Three more are still missing.

Nickel-Cadmium Batteries
Nickel-Cadmium Batteries1. Rechargeable batteries are the main alternative to ordinary batteries. These are power sources where the chemical process is reversible: it goes in one direction when they are under load and in the other when they are under voltage. Thus, you do not have to throw away a rechargeable battery after use and buy a new one. You only need to recharge it to its full (or almost full) initial capacity. 2. We'll have a look at batteries used in light household electronic equipment. Nickel-cadmium batteries were created by the Swedish scientist Waldemar Junger in 1899. At that time, they were quite expensive. Moreover, they were not sealed: they released gas during the charging. It is only in the middle of the last century that a closed cycle nickel-cadmium battery was created. Gas released while charging was absorbed by the battery itself. 3. Batteries of this type have a nickel anode and a cadmium cathode. Nickel-cadmium batteries are popular with customers all over the world. Besides, they are relatively light and power-intensive. 4. Nickel-cadmium batteries are reliable and durable. They can be stored for up to 5 years and charged up to 1000 times if used correctly. They function well at low temperatures and sustain high charging currents. They can be charged by both low and high currents. Batteries feature a memory effect. The memory effect is a result of violation of the battery internal structure. Crystals grow in it, reducing the useful surface and ...

Report Finds Cadmium in China Rice Crops
For more news visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com or Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Food safety has been a persistent problem in China in recent years. Now consumers are warned that rice—the staple food for most Chinese—may contain high levels of the dangerous metal cadmium. Citing a 2007 survey by Nanjing Agricultural University researchers, Beijing-based New Century Magazine reports that between 10 to 60 percent of rice sold in six regions in China contain cadmium. In one sample, the cadmium content was five times the legal limit. Cadmium can cause bone softening and fluid accumulation in the lungs. Researchers say contamination happens when industrial waste pollutes the soil and metals, like cadmium and lead, are absorbed by rice crops. Researchers found most of the contaminated rice in southern China, where industrial activity is more concentrated. Water and soil pollution is a serious problem in China. Authorities have largely failed to protect the environment in the wake of rapid industrialization over the years. 10% of rice on Chinese market contains cadmium in excess: Survey english.peopledaily.com.cn China rice laced with heavy metals: report www.google.com New Food Scare: Some Cadmium With Your Rice? blogs.wsj.com

Chinese Factory Directors Detained After Cadmium Deaths
Directors of a chemical plant in central Hunan Province are in criminal detention after cadmium poisoning killed two people. Residents in the city of Liuyang blame Xianghe Chemical Factory for cadmium pollution since its operation started in 2004. They say the factory has contaminated the surrounding vegetation and water supply. In March this year, the municipal Environment Protection Bureau denied that there was cadmium pollution in the area—despite residents' complaints. Two men died in the following months, and autopsies found both had high cadmium levels in their bodies. According to state media, tests conducted last month revealed that 509 residents have excessive levels of cadmium in their urine. On Friday, 1000 residents protested against the problem they say has been ignored for too long. Mounting public pressure now has Hunan officials admitting that Xianghe Factorys illegal operations are the direct cause of local cadmium pollution. As a result, the factory directors were detained, the head of the Liuyang Environment Protection Bureau has stood down, and the factory has been permanently closed.

Cancer-causing Cadmium Pollution Found in China's Liujiang River
For more news and videos visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Add us on Facebook ☛ on.fb.me A mining company has polluted a major river in southern China. The deadly chemical contamination threatens millions of people living downstream. Cadmium pollution was detected in the Liujiang River in the Guangxi region last Thursday. Cadmium is a chemical that can cause cancer and damage people's kidneys. It was found more than 10 days after the wastewater from a local mining firm polluted Longjiang, a tributary upstream of the Liujiang River. A water test sample shows the river contains five times more cadmium than the safety standard. The affected areas have been reached 37 miles away from Liuzhou Dam, which sits on the Liujiang River. Local authorities warned residents not to fetch water from the polluted sections of the river. It's affecting more than three million people living nearby who have to rely on bottled water. Although it has been verified the pollution comes from the Guangxi Jinhe Mining Company, it's not clear when it started and the quantity of the discharge. [Huang He, Deputy Head of Environmental Protection Bureau, Hechi City]: "Guangxi Jinhe Mining Co. Ltd. is responsible for the pollution according to our initial investigation. The company had long been storing industrial waste at the foot of the hill, which was then discharged to the Longjiang River through underground water." Local fire authorities put tons of neutralizers, made from ...

Agbogbloshie is a suburb of Accra, Ghana known as a destination for legal and illegal exportation and environmental dumping of electronic waste (e-waste) from industrialized nations. Often referred to as a "digital dumping ground", millions of tons of e-waste are processed each year in Agbogbloshie
Processing electronic waste presents a serious health threat to workers at Agbogbloshie. The fumes released from the burning of the plastics and metals used in electronics are composed of highly toxic chemicals and carcinogens. Workers often inhale lead, cadmium, dioxins, furans, phthalates and brominated flame retardants.
Exposure to these fumes is especially hazardous to children, as these toxins are known to inhibit the development of the reproductive system, the nervous system and the brain.

Cadmium Heavy Metal Detox & Cleanse
www.balancedhealthtoday.com http Heavy Metal Detoxification Process Some natural heavy metal detoxification agents include alfalfa, cilantro, chlorella, and rutin. It is ideal that these herbs and supplements be taken after consulting a qualified natural health care physician or herbalist. Alfalfa: Alfalfa is high-fiber herb which is a rich source of proteins, vitamins A, B6, D, E and K. In addition to this, it also contains various minerals like calcium, potassium, magnesium, chlorophyll, iron, and phosphorous and other important enzymes that aid in the digestion process. Alfalfa also has the ability to deactivate toxic chemical substances in the intestine and liver. It will then eliminate these toxins from thehuman body before they can cause damage. People with increased iron levels should not take alfalfa or its products. Cilantro: Also referred to as coriander, cilantro has the ability to remove heavy metal toxins from the human body. Cilantro can be used in salads, soups, and other dishes and included in the diet on a regular basis. Cilantro has always been described as having the ability to "chelate" toxic heavy metals from thehuman body . Chelate is based on a Greek word for "claw" and suggests that it can surround the particle or substance, swallow it up, and here we are referring to the ability of cilantro to chelate heavy metal toxins from thehuman body. Chlorella: Chlorella is a unicellular algae growing in fresh water and is great source of minerals, vitamins ...
