Via Think Progress: "The number of teen births in the US dropped again in 2010, according to a government report, with nearly every state seeing a decrease. Nationally, the rate fell 9 percent to about 34 per 1000 girls ages 15 through 19, and the drop was seen among all racial and ethnic groups. Mississippi continues to have the highest teen birth rate, with 55 births per 1000 girls. New Hampshire has the lowest rate at just under 16 percent...".* Ana Kasparian and Cenk Uygur discuss this in the context of the role of abstinence sex education programs on The Young Turks. *Read more from Amanda Peterson Beadle: thinkprogress.org Subscribe to The Young Turks: bit.ly Find out how to watch The Young Turks on Current by clicking here: www.current.com The Largest Online New Show in the World. Distilled Demographics: The Birth Rate
The birth rate is one of the most basic and important measures in demography. Birth rates affect public policy and budgeting for education and health systems, and can have major impacts on the wellbeing of a country's population. In this video, PRB senior demographer Carl Haub explains how "crude" birth rates, the total fertility rate, and replacement-level fertility rates are measured, and using examples from various countries, why these measures matter for public health and economic development. By comparing these measures across different countries as examples, we can see how birth rates matter for all of us.

Economy is best form of birth control
nma.tv US birth rates have been falling ever since the recession started, and studies show that this year they've fallen even more! In 2007, there were over 4.3 million babies born, the most ever. It's supposed to go up every year. But now it's down to 4 million. This year, young women from their teens to early 20s have the lowest birth rate ever! Modern women have certain goals and dreams they want to experience before having kids, so they're having kids later in life. But these days, they just want to keep their jobs and be able to pay for gas! And if you have any fear of losing your job, you wouldn't try to get pregnant at a time you could lose your health insurance! The number of vasectomies has also gone up in the last few years! Why keep paying for condoms or pills if you know you don't want more kids? You may think low birth rate is good, for population control. But down the line, it could actually be harmful. In the near future we will see more and more of the "4-2-1 problem". You have four grandparents, two parents and one child, and in countries where people are expected to take care of their old folks, it's a lot of responsibility! But either way, if old folks don't have retirement money or savings, the responsibility goes to the government and taxpayers. Careful, or you could end up like Taiwan, where they're trying to bribe people into making babies!

euronews reporter - Uganda family planning: 'Choice not chance'
www.euronews.com In Uganda today family planning is at the top of the agenda. At the moment there are 34 million citizens but the country has one of the fastest growing populations anywhere in the world. On average each woman will give birth to six children. In villages and communities people gather to listen the presenters of Heart Radio Uganda. Their talk show discusses family planning, covering topics such as contraceptive injections, condoms and how to avoid teenage pregnancy. It offers people the chance to call in with their questions, and also stimulates debate in the community. John Baptist Muweesi is one of the presenters. "It is very useful, he says. "All of the people in this community own phones, then people call, ask questions, give views, then the expert on the studio answers those questions." This is one of the UN Population Fund initiatives to provide information about birth control to the people of Uganda. Jackie Kasande, a Ugandan single mother who has been helped by the show, said: "When I was 19 I had just completed my A-level exams when I got pregnant. I decided not to abort. I gave birth to my son and afterwards I thought of ways to go back to school. So I went back to school and I used family planning methods not to mess up again." There are many reasons for the high birth rate, but it hinges on tradition, religious beliefs, polygamy and early marriage. In Uganda large families are seen as a source of prestige and wealth, some also see child labour ...

Professor Wants US Population Cut 50%
During a speech earlier this year given by University of California-Riverside professor Richard Cardullo, the cottonseed derivative Gossypol is being proposed as an adequate sterilant to bring down the birthrate in the United States. Stating that the substance's permanent sterilization effects on males is already being considered for widespread use in China and many third world countries, Cardullo calls it "an option" for use within the United States. In addition to Gossypol, the professor advised the attending students to lower their standard of living if the earth is to continue carrying humans on its surface. Interesting to note that the professor has recently been selected by the National Science Foundation, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to join the Partnership for Undergraduate Life Sciences Education (PULSE) program, funded by the federal government. As part of the university's online science lecture series, recorded on the campus earlier this year, the professor's lecture "Is Earth Overpopulated" is a classic neo-Malthusian regurgitation claiming the planet cannot carry much more people. "If you want to minimize environmental impact, perhaps you should consider lowering your standard of living, for instance." Cardullo also told people could reduce human impact on the earth by becoming vegetarians: "One of the things we know is the production of meat is incredibly expensive," he said.
