007 Legends PS3 gets exclusive Skyfall characters for multiplayer

Eurocom's re-imagining of select James Bond films, 007 Legends, has some exclusive content on the PS3. MI6 field agent Eve and assassin Patrice from next month's Skyfall film are both playable in multiplayer and have "their own special features and abilities," though the PlayStation Blog post doesn't mention what those features and abilities are, exactly.

We contacted Activision for further information on what sets these two characters apart in the 007 Legends multiplayer mode. We'll be sure to update as soon as MI6 command gets back to us.

The War Z terms of use has link to League of Legends agreement

The War Z terms of use has link to League of Legends agreement
The War Z user agreement has a link to the terms of use for League of Legends, with the URL typed out in full, in the middle of section two, "Requirements." The War Z terms read:

"In installing and using the Software and playing the Game, you acknowledge that you have read, understand and agree with the terms of this License Agreement. You must also: (i) read, understand and agree to the OP Productions Terms of Use http://www.leagueoflegends.com/legal/termsofuse (the 'Terms of Use')."

Someone who actually read the terms of use before accepting noticed this mistake and posted a thread in The War Z's subreddit, where another user uploaded the above photo (larger image here). The War Z already gets flak for being a "cash-in rip-off" of wildly successful Arma 2 mod Day Z, and now it's getting heat for apparently taking League of Legends' terms of use, copy-pasta.

Dead or Alive 5's new costume packs include fiend Hayabusa, cat ears, 'bartender britches'

Dead or Alive 5's new costume packs include fiend Hayabusa, cat ears, 'bartender britches'
The latest slew of DLC costume packs for Dead or Alive 5 includes one awesome thing (above), some normal-lookin' street clothes and then a whole bunch of stuff we'd be embarrassed to describe in public.

"Kitty Pack," as you might suspect, includes cat ears and corset-ish catsuits for Christie, Helena, Tina and Lisa. The "What a Character" pack adds two maid outfits for Hitomi and Mila that are more of the "Octoberfest Bar maid" variety than the "French House maid" type you might expect, a slinky gown and mask for Lisa, and "bartender britches" for Rig.

Lastly, the "Special Set" gives Kasumi and Leifang access to their traditional overalls and panda-bear outfits, respectively, in addition to "fiend" Hayabusa and an even slinkier evening gown for Lisa. Each pack is available now for $4.99/400 MSP, and all three can be purchased together via the "Round 2 Costumes - Full Set" pack, which at the moment is only available on the 360 for 1040 MSP. PlayStation 3 owners looking for a sweet costume discount will have to wait until next week, when the Full Set becomes available for $12.99.

Dungeon Defenders celebrates first birthday with new content, sale

Co-op tower defense action-RPG (phew) Dungeon Defenders is celebrating its first year of existence with some party favors and a sale. For the next two weeks, the "Dungeon Defenders Anniversary Pack DLC" is free. It finds our pint-sized heroes wearing party hats and defending a newly decorated tavern homebase from wave after wave of monsters trying to destroy the birthday cake crystal core.

Dungeon Defenders is also 75 percent off as part of Steam's midweek madness sale, making the core game a mere $3.74. Want to be a big spender and receive all of Dungeon Defenders' content? Well, better cancel that trip to The Olive Garden tonight, because that's going to cost $12.49.

New Medal of Honor trailer goes to the beach

Image Oh, this trailer is about "breaching," not "beaching." That's a relief, because we've never seen the gerund form of "beach" before and thought we were falling behind on our hip internet lingo. Of course, people who use "gerund" on a video game blog probably aren't that cool anyway. We're aware. ... Continue Reading

Report: Major game sales knocking out the middle market

Report The right kind of game sells big at retail, but where's the middle
The more marketing a video game gets, the more likely it is to succeed at retail. This may be obvious, but the questions it raises of the industry are more subtle, as is the impact this trend has on the market as a whole. Namely, the disparity created by mega-huge games is systematically booting out any chance of a middle-market game's success, Gamasutra's Matt Matthews reports.

Major games, such as Black Ops 2 and Halo 4, are seeing retail revenue contract slowly during the holiday season each year, as demonstrated by the above graph. Games outside of the top 20, however, are experiencing a holiday revenue decline by a compound annual growth rate of approximately 11 percent.

"Consider games like Sleeping Dogs and Darksiders 2, each of which sold under 300,000 units in August and then disappeared from the top 10 by September," Matthews says. "These middle-tier titles fall by the wayside when they don't get the first-class promotions of titles like New Super Mario Bros. 2, which is now over 500,000 units in its second month on a platform with fewer than 6 million owners."

This holiday season matters more than previous years, as publishers have moved most of their major launches to October at least, potentially shifting the "middle of the retail year" from September to October for the first time this generation. Games with a surplus of marketing money, such as Borderlands 2, New Super Mario Bros. 2 and Madden NFL 13, are selling almost disproportionately well, which bodes well for this holiday's major hits.

"However, I think it likely that other titles, like say XCOM: Enemy Unknown, are on the edge and at risk of being overlooked by gamers who appear to have become more discerning with the money they're spending on games," Matthews says. XCOM will remain a hit in our hearts, at least.

Obsidian's Project Eternity Kickstarter concludes at $3.9 million

Obsidian's Project Eternity Kickstarter ends today 9pm ET
That's it! Obsidian's Project Eternity Kickstarter has finished with $3,986,194 pledged. This means Project Eternity, an old-school fantasy RPG project from the longtime developer, has earned more contributions than the $3.3 million by Double Fine Adventure, the Kickstarter project that kicked off this whole "year of the game."

"It's all smiles and gratitude over here at Obsidian," CEO Feargus Urquhart told us. "It is incredible what crowdfunding can make possible."

Other recent mega success stories in Kickstarter funding include Uber Entertainment's $2.2 million for Planetary Annihilation and the $8.5 million by Ouya.

Rayman Jungle Run updated for iPhone 5

Rayman Jungle Run updated with Retina support, stuff
Rayman Jungle Run on iOS was bumped up to version 1.0.3 today. The update optimizes the game for retina display on iPhone 5, adds a menu option that allows players to gift Rayman Jungle Run to a friend (you still have to pay the $3, mind you), and fixes minor glitches in iCloud and elsewhere.

Rayman Jungle Run is available for Android and iOS. We think it's "evil," but in a good way.

Today marks the rollout of the Fall 2012 Xbox 360 dashboard update for non-beta participants – that's you guys! Regular ol' Xbox 360 users should discover a mandatory update sometime today.

Among the changes to the UI and the addition of Internet Explorer for Gold subscribers, this latest dashboard refresh adds tailored recommendations based on your gaming habits, the ability to pin individual items to the home screen and enhanced searching functionality. SmartGlass support should be coming later this month, once Windows 8 arrives on October 26.

UK gaming pioneer Mike Singleton dies at 61

UK gaming pioneer Mike Singleton died today, aged 61
Mike Singleton, a prominent and prolific game developer based in the UK, died on October 10 of natural causes at the age of 61, following a year-long battle with jaw cancer. Singleton was responsible for a few games that serve as the foundation of home entertainment, including Space Ace for the Commodore VIC-20, War in Middle Earth for the ZX Spectrum, Carrier Command for the Amiga, Midwinter and Midwinter 2 for Atari ST, Amiga and PC, and more recently GRID for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC.

A friend and previous employee of Singleton's has a heartfelt dedication to his work and life here, along with a list of all the games Singleton created or had a hand in. The friend writes, "Next time you pop in a disk, raise a glass and say 'Cheers Singo!'"

Cheers.

Sonic Jump vaults to iOS on October 18

Sonic Jump vaults to iOS on October 18
Sega's mysterious iOS game Sonic Jump just got a bit less mysterious – at least, when it comes to pricing and launch date. Sonic Jump will be available worldwide for iPhone/iPod Touch and iPad on Thursday, October 18, the Sega Twitter account has announced.

Sonic Jump will cost $1.99 and looks like a Doodle Jump clone, though Sega has yet to show us any gameplay. Sega released a mobile Sonic Jump game in 2006, predating Doodle Jump, but we're certain that later game has influenced this new one.

'Frobisher Says' to download this free Vita game next week

'Frobisher Says' to download this free Vita game next week
Frobisher Says was given away on Vita in Europe at launch, but North American Vita owners have had to wait for their opportunity to play what is basically indie WarioWare. Now, SCEA will publish the microgame collection on October 23 – for free.

The over 50 microgames force players to manipulate the Vita in every possible way to fulfill challenges like washing a dog or scratching the mascot's back, basically frantically pawing at the Vita until you figure it out. In addition, up to eight players can play together, all panicking as they figure out how to achieve the insane goals.

PSA: Mark of the Ninja now on Steam

Klei Entertainment's Mark of the Ninja is now live on Steam, completely in the open and totally unguarded against online purchases of $14.99. As for the trailer, it certainly isn't helping the 2D stealth game stay undetected.

Incidentally, Klei isn't resting its laurels after sending Mark of the Ninja on its way. The developer's next project is Don't Starve, described as "an uncompromising wilderness survival game full of science and magic." So, a bit like Half-Life 2 then? Oh wait, we've just seen the video, never mind.

PSA: Watch, interact with tonight's presidential debate on Xbox Live

PSA Watch tonight's presidential debate on Xbox Live
The second presidential debate will be streamed on Xbox Live tonight for Gold members, starting at 9 p.m. ET. Just like the previous presidential and vice presidential debates, this one will be interactive, posing questions to viewers on policy and performance.

This presidential debate is in a town hall format, meaning members of the audience will have the opportunity to ask President Barack Obama and republican Mitt Romney questions directly. It will (attempt to) focus on domestic and foreign policy.

The vice presidential debate saw more than 30,000 responses to each question, with more than 800,000 individual responses total. Tonight's debate is accessible through the Xbox Live dashboard.

PSA: Three Sleeping Dogs DLC packs out today

PSA Sleeping Dogs Street Racer, Tactical Soldier, free packs out now
Three DLC packs for Sleeping Dogs launch today for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC: The Street Racer pack runs $4 (320 MS Points), the Tactical Soldier pack is $2 (160 MS Points), and the Community Gift pack is free (otherwise it wouldn't be much of a gift).

Street Racer adds three new races on land and sea, titled Kamikaze, Cross Island Enduro and Harbor Run – the last of which is the water-based race, if that wasn't obvious. This pack includes a new Sting racing bike and a Dragon outfit.

Tactical Soldier includes the assault rifle, known as "the game's most powerful and destructive weapon," and the strongest armor of the game, the Tactical outfit. The Community Gift pack includes wardrobe items from developer United Front Games, for United Front Games: a studio t-shirt, a UFG-themed, environmentally friendly compact car and a luchador mask, which is apparently some sort of inside joke for the development team.

All three packs are available right now, so get racing, tactician-ing and wrestling, we guess.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 launch trailer is all gunfire and gadgets, that one AC/DC song

Image Activision's final pre-launch video barrage for Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 has arrived, giving us an ample look at the techno-gadgets and many, many explosions sure to pervade the campaign. Plus there's that one song that just seems to make all explosions a bit more explodey, so that's nice. ... Continue Reading

Monaco coming to XBLA and PC simultaneously

For years, Pocketwatch Games' multiplayer heist-action game Monaco has been a hit at trade shows, award ceremonies and Joystiq parties. Now, Joystiq can exclusively reveal that it's going to be playable in your very own home on XBLA and Steam (for both Mac and PC).

There's no release date, but the self-published PC version will be released simultaneously with the Majesco-published XBLA release – Pocketwatch isn't sure if the Mac version will be day-and-date, but "we're doing our best."

"Monaco was originally designed to be played with four friends on the couch, all planning and executing a heist together," designer Andy Schatz said. Pocketwatch has added four-player online co-op to all the versions, in addition to the couch-based co-op and the single player ("the stealthiest version," Schatz calls it.) The XBLA release facilitates the authentic couch multiplayer by putting the game on a couch-friendly console. Schatz said that he met with Majesco at PAX East and "the stars aligned."

Mass Effect 3 receives 'Groundside Weapons' pack
Those who pick up the "Groundside Resistance weapon pack" for Mass Effect 3 can have Commander Shepard play with some new toys. The armory set includes seven new weapons, covering pistols to shotguns, along with a harpoon gun... to hunt elcor? Asked how it felt about being compared to a whale in that last line, our token office elcor responded, "Disappointed: Did you just call me fat?"

The weapon pack costs $1.99 (160 Microsoft points) and is available today on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. The next big piece of a DLC content for Mass Effect 3 is the Omega mission, available November 27 for $15 (1200 MSP).
