Diffusion and Osmosis
Clark College Tutoring and Writing Center tutor Joey Smokey introduces the concept of diffusion and osmosis, providing multiple definitions and explaining how the two processes work. Along the way, he explains things such as concentration gradients, semipermeable membranes, colloids and suspensions, and the effects of concentration on red blood cells in isotonic, hypotonic, and hypertonic solutions.

Learn Biology: Cells—Osmosis vs. Diffusion
Check out Bas Rutten's Liver Shot on MMA Surge: bit.ly Mahalo biology expert Mary Poffenroth explains the difference between osmosis and diffusion. Osmosis vs. Diffusion --------------------------------------------------------------------- Passive transport is the movement of a substance across a permeable membrane, without additional energy. Diffusion and osmosis are both examples of "passive transport." The difference? Diffusion is the passive transport of solutes, like oxygen and carbon dioxide; osmosis is the passive transport of only water.c Natural Diffusion --------------------------------------------------------------------- Substances will naturally diffuse down a concentration gradient from high to low. Think of it like a bus - as more people get on, the concentration rises; when you get to a bus stop, half the people get off and the concentration decreases until an equilibrium is achieved.c Read more by visiting our page at: www.mahalo.com

Rendering Synthetic Objects into Legacy Photographs
Supplementary material video for our 2011 SIGGRAPH Asia paper (see the project page here: http://kevinkarsch.com/publications/sa11.html). 3D objects are rendered using LuxRender (http://www.luxrender.net).
Authors: Kevin Karsch, Varsha Hedau, David Forsyth, Derek Hoiem
Abstract: We propose a method to realistically insert synthetic objects into existing photographs without requiring access to the scene or any additional scene measurements. With a single image and a small amount of annotation, our method creates a physical model of the scene that is suitable for realistically rendering synthetic objects with diffuse, specular, and even glowing materials while accounting for lighting interactions between the objects and the scene. We demonstrate in a user study that synthetic images produced by our method are confusable with real scenes, even for people who believe they are good at telling the difference. Further, our study shows that our method is competitive with other insertion methods while requiring less scene information. We also collected new illumination and reflectance datasets; renderings produced by our system compare well to ground truth. Our system has applications in the movie and gaming industry, as well as home decorating and user content creation, among others.

Oil in Water
Just messing around one day, with my Canon Rebel XT DSLR.
Oil being poured into a cup of water.
Music by Bonobo // Recurring
edit 4/24 6:30am:
WOW! I'm glad everyone is liking this so much! I really didn't even put any thought into the timing or editing of this. i just went through the sequences i had, in order, and tossed some music over it. The frames are pretty much un-edited. I think I changed the white balance, and added some sharpness, and that was all.
I wish I had an actual video camera, that could capture some of the things I see, when photographing my subjects. IMO the time-lapse looks neat, but does not do it justice.
A lot of people are asking how I did this. It's pretty simple. I just put the camera on its' lowest jpeg setting, placed the camera into continuous mode, and locked the shutter down with my wired remote. The oil is being dumped into a tall cylindrical glass, with about a cup of water in it. The whole thing is lit from behind by a diffused clamp light.

100 and one faces. 101 faces
Playing off the theme of a recent video contest, « Transformation : Live and React », JUL & MAT (France) explored the human face, the most exposed and personal part of the human body. Their dynamic portrayal of 1000 and one faces is a mosaic of portraits and emotions that plays off of the power of faces seen close up. Julien Fargo composed the melody that encapsulates the film.

L'uomo dalle 100 teste.

Science Experiment - Diffusion Through a Membrane
Iodine turns blue in reaction to starch. When a starch solution is placed in dialysis tubing (a semi-permeable membrane) and the tubing is added to a beaker of iodine , will the starch be able to pass through the tubing and turn the water blue or will the smaller iodine molecules pass through and turn the contents of the tube blue?
