The US military and political authorities see him as a threat however and decide to use so-called intensive interrogation techniques on him but Dr. Benson decides to facilitate his escape. Quotes:
Polygraph Operator: I'm going to ask you a series of control questions. Are you currently in a seated position?::Klaatu: Yes.::Polygraph Operator: Are you human?::Klaatu: My body is.::Polygraph Operator: Do you feel pain?::Klaatu: My body does.::Polygraph Operator: Are you aware of an impending attack on the planet earth?::Klaatu: You should let me go.::Polygraph Operator: I'll repeat the question. [he touches the machine and gets a shock]::Klaatu: What gate did you use to enter this base?::Polygraph Operator: East loading door.::Klaatu: How do I get there?::Polygraph Operator: 100 yards left from the back of this building.::Klaatu: Is there a security code?::Polygraph Operator: 4-4-Bravo-3-0.::Klaatu: What size is that suit?::Polygraph Operator: 42 long.::Klaatu: Take it off.
Regina Jackson: What is your purpose in coming here?::Klaatu: There is a gathering of world leaders not far from here; I will explain my purpose to them.::Regina Jackson: I'm afraid thats not possible. Perhaps you should explain yourself to me instead.::Klaatu: Do you speak for the entire human race?::Regina Jackson: I speak for the President of the United States. Now, please; tell me why have you come to our planet.::Klaatu: *Your* planet.::Regina Jackson: Yes; this is our planet.::Klaatu: No, it is not.
Klaatu: The decision is made.
Klaatu: [to Helen] Your professor is right. At the precipice we change.
Guardswoman: [Catching Helen with a cellphone after they had been forbidden] Is that a cell phone?::Helen Benson: [nods]::Guardswoman: [Chokingly] Can I borrow it?
Helen Benson: I need to know what's happening.::Klaatu: This planet is dying. The human race is killing it.::Helen Benson: So you've come here to help us.::Klaatu: No, *I* didn't.::Helen Benson: You said you came to save us.::Klaatu: I said I came to save the Earth.::Helen Benson: You came to save the Earth... from us. You came to save the Earth *from* us.::Klaatu: We can't risk the survival of this planet for the sake of one species.::Helen Benson: What are you saying?::Klaatu: If the Earth dies, you die. If you die, the Earth survives. There are only a handful of planets in the cosmos that are capable of supporting complex life...::Helen Benson: You can't do this.::Klaatu: ...this one can't be allowed to perish.::Helen Benson: We can change. We can still turn things around.::Klaatu: We've watched, we've waited and hoped that you *would* change.::Helen Benson: Please...::Klaatu: It's reached the tipping point. We have to act.::Helen Benson: Please...::Klaatu: We'll undo the damage you've done and give the Earth a chance to begin again.::Helen Benson: Don't do this. Please, we can change. We can change.::Klaatu: The decision is made. The process has begun.::Helen Benson: Oh God.
Professor Barnhardt: There must be alternatives. You must have some technology that could solve our problem.::Klaatu: Your problem is not technology. The problem is you. You lack the will to change.::Professor Barnhardt: Then help us change.::Klaatu: I cannot change your nature. You treat the world as you treat each other.::Professor Barnhardt: But every civilization reaches a crisis point eventually.::Klaatu: Most of them don't make it.::Professor Barnhardt: Yours did. How?::Klaatu: Our sun was dying. We had to evolve in order to survive.::Professor Barnhardt: So it was only when your world was threated with destruction that you became what you are now.::Klaatu: Yes.::Professor Barnhardt: Well that's where we are. You say we're on the brink of destruction and you're right. But it's only on the brink that people find the will to change. Only at the precipice do we evolve. This is our moment. Don't take it from us, we are close to an answer.
Klaatu: There are some things I can't do.::Jacob Benson: But you have powers.::Klaatu: I'm sorry.::Jacob Benson: Please. Please!::Klaatu: Jacob, nothing ever truly dies. The universe wastes nothing. Everything is simply, transformed.::Jacob Benson: Just leave me alone.
Helen Benson: It's alright. He's here to help.::Klaatu: There's another side to you. I feel it now.::Helen Benson: [referring to large, black cloud] Is that how it ends?::Klaatu: Yes.::Helen Benson: You can't stop it?::Klaatu: I don't know. It would come at a price, to you and your way of life.::Helen Benson: But we can change, you know that now. Please, please, just give us a chance.::Klaatu: I'll try. I must get back to the city.
Professor Barnhardt: I have so many questions to ask you.::Helen Benson: [addressing Klaatu about the music playing] It's Bach.::Klaatu: It's beautiful.::Professor Barnhardt: So we're not so different after all.::Klaatu: I wish that were true.

Plot: 'Stephen Spielberg', 'Ridley Scott' (qv), 'James Cameron (I)' (qv) and 'George Lucas (I)' (qv) discuss the importance of science fiction films and the influence of the genre. Following the end of World War II, new kinds of enemies appeared, those that could not be seen such as the atom or the fear of the unknown such as that resulting from the cold war. Movies became metaphors for those fears and science fiction films took many forms. They include giant bugs such as the ants in _Them! (1954)_ (qv) or inanimate object such as in _The Monolith Monsters (1957)_ (qv). In _The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957)_ (qv) the terror comes from everyday life - a cat, a spider - as the man gets smaller and smaller. Science fiction involving space travel required more imagination. _Destination Moon (1950)_ (qv) and _Rocketship X-M (1950)_ (qv) were early attempts at taking a serious look at space flight and its implications. Then there were encounters with aliens, some benign, such as Klaatu from _The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951)_ (qv) or aggressive aliens as terrorist or a danger to humankind such as in _Invaders from Mars (1953)_ (qv) or _The War of the Worlds (1953)_ (qv).

Quotes:
C-3PO: [to R2D2] If I told you half the things I've heard about this Jabba the Hutt, you'd probably short circuit.
Luke: [approaching R2-D2] I can't do it, R2. I can't go on alone.::Obi-Wan: [from out of sight] Yoda and I will always be with you.::Luke: Obi-Wan.::[Obi-Wan's spirit approaches Luke]::Luke: Ben! Why didn't you tell me? You told me that Darth Vader betrayed and murdered my father.::Obi-Wan: Your father... was seduced by the Dark Side of the Force. He ceased to be Anakin Skywalker and "became" Darth Vader. When that happened, the good man who was your father was destroyed. So what I told you was true... from a certain point of view.::Luke: A certain point of view?::Obi-Wan: Luke, you're going to find that many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view. Anakin was a good friend. When I first met him, your father was already a great pilot. But I was amazed how strongly the Force was with him. I took it upon myself to train him as a Jedi. I thought that I could instruct him just as well as Yoda. I was wrong.::Luke: There is still good in him.::Obi-Wan: He's more machine now than man. His mind is twisted and evil.::Luke: I can't do it, Ben.::Obi-Wan: You cannot escape your destiny. You must face Darth Vader again.::Luke: I can't kill my own father.::Obi-Wan: Then the Emperor has already won. You were our only hope.::Luke: Yoda spoke of another.::Obi-Wan: The other he spoke of is your twin sister.::Luke: But I have no sister.::Obi-Wan: Hmm. To protect you both from the Emperor, you were hidden from your father when you were born. The Emperor knew, as I did, if Anakin were to have any offspring, they would be a threat to him. That is the reason why your sister remained safely anonymous.::Luke: Leia! Leia is my sister.::Obi-Wan: Your insight serves you well. Bury your feelings deep down, Luke. They do you credit, but they could be made to serve the Emperor.
Luke: I'll not leave you here. I've got to save you.::Anakin: You already have, Luke.
Darth Vader: You cannot hide forever, Luke.::Luke: I will not fight you.::Darth Vader: Give yourself to the Dark Side. It is the only way you can save your friends. Yes, your thoughts betray you. Your feelings for them are strong. Especially for... sister. So, you have a twin sister. Your feelings have now betrayed her, too. Obi-Wan was wise to hide her from me. Now his failure is complete. If you will not turn to the Dark Side... then perhaps she will...::Luke: [igniting light saber, screams] NEVER!
Darth Vader: Luke... help me take this mask off.::Luke: But you'll die.::Darth Vader: Nothing... can stop that now. Just for once... let me... look on you with my *own* eyes.::[Luke takes off Darth Vader's mask one piece at a time. Underneath, Luke sees the face of a pale, scarred, bald-headed, old man - his father, Anakin. Anakin sadly looks at Luke]::Anakin: Now... go, my son. Leave me.::Luke: No. You're coming with me. I'll not leave you here, I've got to save you.::Anakin: You already... have, Luke. You were right. You were right about me. Tell your sister... you were right.::[Anakin slumps down in death]::Luke: Father... I won't leave you.
Yoda: No more training do you require. Already know you, that which you need.::Luke: Then I am a Jedi.::Yoda: No. Not yet. One thing remains. Vader. You must confront Vader. Then, only then, a Jedi will you be. And confront him you will.
Moff Jerjerrod: Lord Vader, this is an unexpected pleasure. We are honored by your presence...::Darth Vader: You may dispense with the pleasantries, Commander. I'm here to put you back on schedule.::Moff Jerjerrod: I assure you, Lord Vader. My men are working as fast as they can.::Darth Vader: Perhaps I can find new ways to motivate them.
Moff Jerjerrod: The Emperor's coming here?::Darth Vader: That is correct, Commander. And, he is most displeased with your apparent lack of progress.::Moff Jerjerrod: We shall double our efforts.::Darth Vader: I hope so, Commander, for your sake. The Emperor is not as forgiving as I am.
Lando Calrissian: Split up and head back to the surface. And see if you can get a few of those TIE fighters to follow you.
Darth Vader: Obi-Wan has taught you well.

Quotes:
[last lines]::Klaatu: I am leaving soon, and you will forgive me if I speak bluntly. The universe grows smaller every day, and the threat of aggression by any group, anywhere, can no longer be tolerated. There must be security for all, or no one is secure. Now, this does not mean giving up any freedom, except the freedom to act irresponsibly. Your ancestors knew this when they made laws to govern themselves and hired policemen to enforce them. We, of the other planets, have long accepted this principle. We have an organization for the mutual protection of all planets and for the complete elimination of aggression. The test of any such higher authority is, of course, the police force that supports it. For our policemen, we created a race of robots. Their function is to patrol the planets in spaceships like this one and preserve the peace. In matters of aggression, we have given them absolute power over us. This power cannot be revoked. At the first sign of violence, they act automatically against the aggressor. The penalty for provoking their action is too terrible to risk. The result is, we live in peace, without arms or armies, secure in the knowledge that we are free from aggression and war. Free to pursue more... profitable enterprises. Now, we do not pretend to have achieved perfection, but we do have a system, and it works. I came here to give you these facts. It is no concern of ours how you run your own planet, but if you threaten to extend your violence, this Earth of yours will be reduced to a burned-out cinder. Your choice is simple: join us and live in peace, or pursue your present course and face obliteration. We shall be waiting for your answer. The decision rests with you.
Klaatu: I'm worried about Gort. I'm afraid of what he might do if anything should happen to me.::Helen: Gort? But he's a robot. Without you, what could he do?::Klaatu: There's no limit to what he could do. He could destroy the Earth.
Mr. Harley: Your impatience is quite understandable.::Klaatu: I'm impatient with stupidity. My people have learned to live without it.::Mr. Harley: I'm afraid my people haven't. I'm very sorry... I wish it were otherwise.
Klaatu: We have come to visit you in peace and with goodwill.
Klaatu: I won't resort to threats, Mr. Harley. I merely tell you the future of your planet is at stake.
Helen: Gort! Klaatu barada nikto!
Barnhardt: Have you tested this theory?::Klaatu: I find it works well enough to get me from one planet to another.
Army physician: [about Klaatu] He was very nice about it, but he made me feel like a third-class witch doctor.
Helen: I thought you were...::Klaatu: I was.
Helen: What about the rest of the world?::Tom: I don't care about the rest of the world!::[Seeing her shocked expression]::Tom: You'll feel different when you read about me in the papers.::Helen: I feel different now.
