A tiny Indian-made "people's car" could be heading to the U.S. in the next few years, despite a massive amount of changes that would be needed to make the car legal to drive on American roads.
Ratan Tata, head of the Tata Group conglomerate, told Automotive News that it plans to bring a $10,000 version of the Tata Nano to the U.S. in the next three years. The Nano now sells for about $2,500 in India, and was dreamed up as a way to provide a safer alternative to India's most popular form of road transportation, the motorcycle.
"The U.S. is a very enticing market," Tata told the Automotive News. The automaker is redesigning the car for the U.S. and European markets.
The bare bones Nano would give families – who often pile onto a motorcycle – a roof and seatbelts, protecting them in case of accidents. The car isn't selling all that well in India, where highly-publicized photos of the cars bursting into flames put a damper on the vehicle's safety image.
