Iran mulls death penalty for offensive blogs - 24 Mar 09
The number of state-sanctioned executions almost doubled last year. A report by Amnesty International shows Iran, Saudi Arabia and China as being responsible for 90 per cent of all executions in 2008. Another Iranian blogger is in detention
Iranian judiciary confirmed on 30 December the detention of an Iranian-Canadian blogger. His charges are related to insulting Islams religious figures. This move is only the latest in a series of government attempts to tighten the grip on nearly 400000 active bloggers in the country. (According to Open Net Initiative country report, 400000 blogs are active and 7 million access the Internet in Iran.) A bill, which overwhelmingly passed in the Iranian Parliament on its first reading in July 2008, further tightens the squeeze on bloggers. It applies the death penalty to web crimes that threaten societys moral security. These are activities promoting prostitution, corruption or apostasy. Tala Dowlatshahi, Reporters Without Borders Director New York: It is a bill simply put in place to alert the media and other members of civil society that blogging and sending out information, that it is not going to tolerate anybody going against the governments line. Also Tehrans Prosecutor-General Saeed Mortazavi announced on December 10 the formation of a special prosecutors department for Internet crimes that monitor online content and impose penalties for Internet offenses. By the end of 2008 more bloggers were behind bars. According to RSF, Esmail Jafari of Bushehr was sentenced on charges of anti-government propaganda and disseminating information abroad. Additionally, the editor of the Azar Zan blog, Shahnaz Gholami, has been imprisoned since November 9 in the northwestern city of ...

Iranian Bloggers Active Despite Crackdown (Iranvnc.com)
Washington, May 13, 2008 (IranVNC)—The number of Internet users in Iran increased 29 times in 2000-2005. But, according to the Open Net Initiative country report, Iran is now second to China in cracking down on cyberspace. That, however, did not stop bloggers in Iran from telling their stories. 16.20 GMT-12:20 PM/EST Iran experienced the biggest boom in Internet growth throughout the Middle East, according to the Open Net Initiative country report [The number of Internet users increased 29 times between 2000 and 2005]. But, second to China, Iran has exercised the widest crackdown on cyberspace. Government regulations now demand websites and weblogs to be registered, filtered, and in many cases banned without explanation... weblogs such as Farnaz Seify's: Farnaz Seify, popular Iranian blogger: "This is my famous blog, which was blocked six months ago by the judiciary and other authorities. I don't know why. I don't write about political issues. I am careful, but perhaps because of the hits it receives... I tell you blogosphere is not a safe place. There have been cases in which the government had arrested some bloggers." Despite that and the government restricting the speed of Internet connection to 128 kilobytes per second so Iranians wouldn't be able to download foreign music, films or TV programs, bloggers have been very active inside Iran [GFX: In the West, Internet speed connection is above 700 kb]. Seify: "It is a popular concept, especially for youths. It is a good ...

Iran bans Facebook
For Iranians there is nothing unusual in banning Facebook except for sensitive timing. Muzzle the opposition and obstruct the mobilization of Iranian youth through Facebook. The reformist Presidential candidates are using new media technology to reach out to their young voters to unseat current conservative President. The development of new media technology and its is adoption by a large number of people 21m people out of a population of 70m have access to the internet has made blogs and web sites such as Facebook an important campaign tool for the reformist candidate hoping a swing in June 12 balloting. Mr Moussavis supporters have been using Facebook to encourage other Iranians to vote for him, and to unseat President Mahmoud Ahmadi-Nejad. Besides facebook is the only independent source that both the Iranian youth and reformists can use to communicate with the state media tightly under the grip of ruling incumbent President Ahmedinejad. BBC News - Iran state TV runs first documentary on elite forces.FLV
A documentary made by Iranian state television has, for the first time, shown the country's elite forces in action. The troops - known as Yegan-e-vizheh - form the country's anti-terrorism squad, as well as being tasked with dealing with threats ranging from hostage situations to urban violence. The unit helped to quell the unrest after Iran's presidential elections in 2009, in which Iranian security forces were widely criticised for human rights abuses. The programme has proved controversial on Iranian blogs, with some suggesting the authorities are aiming to deter further protests. Karen Zarindast reports.

Anti-Iran Terrorist Confession - Jundollah Leader Abdolmalek Rigi (1 day after his capture)
US offered Rigi 'extensive aid' for Iran attacks The captured ringleader of the Jundallah terrorist group, Abdolmalek Rigi, has confessed that the US administration had assured him of unlimited military aid and funding for waging an insurgency against the Islamic Republic of Iran. The following is the detailed transcript of Rigi's confession, stated in Farsi, as broadcasted on Press TV. "After Obama was elected, the Americans contacted us and they met me in Pakistan. They met us after clashes with my group around March 17 in (the southeastern city of) Zahedan, and he (the US operative) said that Americans had requested a meeting." "I said we didn't have any time for a meeting and if we do help them they should promise to give us aid. They said they would cooperate with us and will give me military equipment, arms and machine guns. They also promised to give us a base along the border with Afghanistan next to Iran." "They asked to meet me and we said where should we meet you and he said in Dubai. We sent someone to Dubai and we told a person to ask a place for myself in Afghanistan from the area near the operations and they complied that they would sort out the problem for us and they will find Mr. Rigi a base and guarantee his own security in Afghanistan or in any of the countries adjacent to Iran so that he can carry on his operations. "They told me that in Kyrgyzstan they have a base called Manas near Bishkek, and that a high-ranking person was coming to meet me and that ...

THE GREEN WAVE teaser (ENGLISH)
a documentary about the uprising in Iran
www.thegreenwave-film.com
Green is the color of hope. Green is the color of Islam. And green was the symbol of recognition among the supporters of presidential candidate Mir-Hossein Mousavi, who became the symbolic figure of the Green Revolution in Iran last year. The presidential elections on June 12th, 2009 were supposed to bring about a change, but contrary to all expectations the ultra-conservative populist Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was confirmed in office. As clear as was the result, as loud and justified were the accusations of vote-rigging. The on-going Where is my vote? protest demonstrations were again and again worn down and broken up with brutal attacks by government militia. Images taken from private persons with their cell phones or cameras bear witness to this excessive violence: people were beaten, stabbed, shot dead, arrested, kidnapped, some of them disappearing without trace. What remains is the countless number of dead or injured people and victims of torture, and another deep wound in the hearts of the Iranians.
THE GREEN WAVE is a touching documentary-collage illustrating the dramatic events and telling about the feelings of the people behind this revolution. Facebook reports, Twitter messages and videos posted in the internet were included in the film composition, and hundreds of real blog entries served as reference for the experiences and thoughts of two young students, whose story is running through the film as the main thread. The film describes their initial hope and curiosity, their desperate fear, and the courage to yet continue to fight. These fictional 'storylines' have been animated as a motion comic – sort of a moving comic – framing the deeply affecting pictures of the revolution and the interviews with prominent human rights campaigners and exiled Iranians. Ali Samadi Ahadi's documentary is a very contemporary chronicle of the Green Revolution and a memorial for all of those who believed in more freedom and lost their lives for that.

The Role of New Media in the Iranian Elections
New technologies played a major role in the events leading up to and following the recent Iranian elections and should continue to have a tremendous impact.
