Caspian Sea Monster Ekranoplan Flight Video
These craft were originally developed by the Soviet Union as very high-speed military transports, and were based mostly on the shores of the Caspian Sea and Black Sea. The largest had max take-off weight over 544 tonnes. About 120 ekranoplans (A-90 Orlyonok class) were initially planned to enter military service in the Soviet Navy. After the collapse of the Soviet Union smaller ekranoplans for non-military use have been under development. The CHDB had already developed the eight-seat Volga-2 in 1985, and Technologies and Transport developed a smaller version by the name of Amphistar.

The Caspian Sea Monster
In August of 1967 an American spy satellite took sensational photographs. A huge unknown machine of 100 meters long and about 500 tons of weight, which looked like an aircraft, was flying over the Caspian Sea waters with more than 500 kilometers of speed. Pentagon analysts called this object "the Caspian sea monster". It was constructed to make the Soviet Union a naval superpower. Find out about the history of the Caspian sea monster's construction, checkouts and its rebirth today.

Life on a Caspian Sea cargo ferry (2007)
In late August 2007, in order to be true to the Silk Road overland plan, I caught a cargo ferry across the Capsian Sea. The journey across the ancient Caucasus glacial melt took about 24 hours from embarkment at Baku in Azerbajian to disembarkment at Turkmenistan's port of Turkmenbashi. The ride cost about US$55. On the way, i met some of the crew and the 3rd engineer agreed to show me a slice of life on the boat. The crew live on this boat for 9 months every year, with little time on land to see family and friends. The Capsian Sea vista is dotted with off shore oil rigs, and other ferries/cargo ships on their way to other ports in Russia, Iran and Kazakstan. In rough weather (thankfully not this time), the salty sea can swell to 10 metres and can be quite a dangerous bronco ride for the sea tanks. My travelling companion (who makes a short but memorable appearance) is Rishi Watson, a brave Irish lad on his way overland to Kathmandu. Traveller's teacup www.teacup.net.au

Caspian Sea countries' summit in Iran - 16 Oct 07
He's the first Russian leader to visit Tehran since the second world war, and President Vladimir Putin's visit comes at a crucial time. Iran's standoff with the US and other world powers over its nuclear programme shows no sign of abating, and Russia has positioned itself as mediator. Just a few hours ago, Putin fired a warning shot at the US by making it clear that any use of military force in the Caspian region was unacceptable. Ayman Moheldine has this report. Amid much fan fare, pomp and even reports of an assassination plot the sitting president of Russia, Putin arrived in Iran. It is the first such visit by a sitting president since 1943 despite participating in a five-nation Caspian Sea Summit, it's the relations between the two that will be closely watched. Now, Moscow, which has had traditionally warm ties with Iran, will attempt to iron out possible differences over Tehran's nuclear energy program which it's helping to develop. And this is where the Russians are doing exactly that the Bushehr Power Plant. It's 90% complete but is still far from operational...Russian contractors say Iran hasn't made timely payments a claim it denies. Tehran has said Moscow was delaying construction because of intense western pressure. That has made some Iranians lose trust. It's not just bilateral issues that will dominate the headlines. Western powers will be watching the Putin's visit very closely for any signs there's a shift in Moscow's policies over Iran nuclear program - a ...

Ekranoplan KM 'Caspian Sea Monster' seaplane
Sorry its in Russian! :( Note: The 6-engined jet at 0:40 is the Antonov 225, which is presently the largest aircraft in the world, period. Its a cargo transporter and its cargo bay is so large it can hold most of the assembled components of a Boeing 747. The Russian space shuttle Buran can be attached to its back for transport as well. The aircraft at 1:23 is the Orlyonok ekranoplan, which as of October 2007 is in the process of being restored for an upcoming Russian aircraft exhibition in Moscow. (Or at least, that's what I've read on the net.) There are thought to be maybe one or two other surviving Orlyonoks besides this one. The aircraft at 7:35 is the Lun ekranoplan, which is based on the KM 'Caspian Sea Monster', but smaller. From the wikipedia article: An ekranoplan (Russian: экранопла́н, literally "screen plane") is a vehicle resembling an aircraft but which operates solely on the principle of ground effect (in Russian эффект экрана effekt ekrana - from which the name derived). Ground effect vehicles (GEV) fly above any flat surface, with the height above ground dependent upon the size of the vehicle. Ekranoplan design was conceived by revolutionary Soviet engineer Rostislav Alexeev. During the Cold War, ekranoplans were sighted for years on the Caspian Sea as huge, fast-moving objects. The name Caspian Sea Monster was given by US intelligence operatives who had spotted the huge vehicle, which looked like an airplane with the outer halves of the wings removed ...

Dawn Above the Cloud Sea
After hiking 13km up HuangShan on the first day, we got up at 4am (after only 5hrs of sleep) to go see the sunrise over the mountain. At first it was a tease - the sky got brighter but we did not see the disk of the sun. When it finally began emerging from the grayness of the horizon, a large cloudmist swooped in to block its ascent from view. (the crowd was certainly displeased!) But at long last the mist dissipated, and the glow of morning illuminated the rolling waves of the cloudsea beneath.
We were at 猴子视海 vista (hou zi guan hai) (monkey gazing at the cloudsea)

UK Navy Serious Game
Maritime Warfare School: Weapons Engineering Round Immersive Learning Simulation
Develop an immersive learning simulation that exposes learners to a type 23 frigate and some of the core daily tasks that new and recent recruits will perform during their first visits out to sea.
MWS’s primary objectives for the simulation were to:
• Reduce the “shock” that learners experience during their first days on their assigned ship
• Improve speed-to-acceptable-performance in conducting a Weapons Engineering Health and Safety round on board a type 23 frigate
MWS intended to use the Caspian-produced simulation as proof-of-concept that:
• Immersive learning simulations (ILSs) can be produced quickly in comparison to traditional simulations and virtual scenarios
• ILSs can be delivered on standard PCs, yet still be immersive
• ILSs can be produced for a much lower cost than traditional simulations and virtual scenarios
• Such ILSs can produce statistically significant performance improvement

Alexeyev KM Ekranoplan "Caspian Sea Monster"
The Central Hydrofoil Design Bureau (CHDB), led by Alexeev, was the center of ground-effect craft development in Russia. The military potential for such a craft was soon recognised and Alexeyev received support and financial resources from Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev. This led to the development of the Caspian Sea Monster, a 550 ton military ekranoplan. Before it, some manned and unmanned prototypes were built, ranging up to eight tons in displacement. The ekranoplan has a lifting power of 1000 tonnes (984 long tons), among the largest ever achieved. The KM, as the Caspian Sea Monster was known in the top secret Soviet military development program, was over 100 metres (328 ft) long, weighed 540 t (531 long tons) fully loaded, and could travel over 400 kilometres per hour (249 mph), mere meters above the surface of the water.[6][7] Another model was the Lun-class, entering service with the Black Sea Fleet in 1987; the Lun-class vehicles had a top speed of 297 knots (550 km/h). The important design principle is that wing lift is reduced as operating altitude of the ekranoplan is increased (see ground effect). Thus it is dynamically stable in the vertical dimension. Once moving at speed, the ekranoplan was no longer in contact with the water, and could move over ice, snow, or level land with equal ease, though flight over land would have involved extreme risks unless the surface were dependably flat.

Crossing the Caspian Sea
Driving from Munich, to Dushanbe (Tajikistan) in a 39hp hatchback, we took the ferry from Baku (Azerbaijan) to Turkmenbashi (Turkmenistan). This infamous ferry connection is for commercial traffic only, but lets tourists on if there is empty space. What it's infamous for? Decrepit cabins and missing safety equipment on the ferries, customs officers demanding bribes from passengers, the captains charging extra money on top of your ticket, crew members cutting your fuel lines and fining you for the spill...and the ferry often staying anchored in different places for two or more days due to weather issues (and the bad state of the ferry, too), boiling passengers in their cabins or frying them in the blistering heat on deck while they watch their Turkmen visas expire. Oh, yeah, and the immigration process in Turkmenbashi takes 8 to 12 hours. I shit you not.
