TEDxSydney - Simon Stone - What is Theatre Capable Of?
Theatre director Simon Stone deconstructs some of the common visual and audio tricks of modern theatre in this first-ever performance utilising a cast of first-time volunteer actors recruited in the days prior to TEDxSydney 2011 and rehearsed just once, the night before the event! Simon is a writer, director and actor. After graduating from The Victorian College of the Arts, he acted in the films Jindabyne, Kokoda, Balibo, Blame and Eye of the Storm, and on stage in Benedict Andrews' Belvoir production of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?. In 2007 Simon founded the independent theatre ensemble The Hayloft Project. For Hayloft he wrote and directed Thyestes and The Only Child; adapted and directed The Suicide, Spring Awakening, Platonov, and one third of the multi-director project 3xSisters; and directed BC. In 2009 he directed his first main stage production for Belvoir, The Promise. In 2010 he was invited by newly-appointed Artistic Director Ralph Myers to become Belvoir's Resident Director. His first production in this position was the 2011 production of The Wild Duck, which he wrote and directed after Ibsen's play of the same name. This year he will also direct Neighbourhood Watch for Belvoir and Baal, co-translated with Tom Wright, for Sydney Theatre Company and Malthouse Theatre. tedxsydney.com ------------------- TEDxSydney 2011 took place on Saturday 28 May 2011 at CarriageWorks. Leading Palestinian Peace Activist & Theater Director, Juliano Mer-Khamis, Killed in Jenin
DemocracyNow.org - Palestinians, artists and peace activists worldwide are mourning the loss of a leading figure in Palestinian creative non-violence resistance. Juliano Mer Khamis, the founder of a theater for Palestinian children, was killed Monday by masked assailants in the West Bank town of Jenin. He had received a number of death threats from extremist Palestinians for his work with the Jenin Freedom Theatre. The theatre has helped Palestinian youths deal with the hardships of life under Israeli occupation by expressing themselves through the arts—film, photography, art and theater. Democracy Now! interviews Nabeel Raee, director of the acting school at the Jenin Freedom Theatre, where he worked closely with Mer-Khamis for many years, and by Constancia "Dinky" Romilly, founder and president of the board of the New York City-based Friends of the Jenin Freedom Theatre, who also worked closely with the program in Jenin. VÍCTOR JARA - Te Recuerdo Amanda
Víctor Lidio Jara Martínez (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈbiktor ˈliðjo ˈxaɾa marˈtines]) (September 28, 1932 -- September 16, 1973) was a Chilean teacher, theatre director, poet, singer-songwriter, political activist and member of the Communist Party of Chile. A distinguished theatre director, he devoted himself to the development of Chilean theatre, directing a broad array of works from locally produced Chilean plays, to the classics of the world stage, to the experimental work of Ann Jellicoe. Simultaneously he developed in the field of music and played a pivotal role among neo-folkloric artists who established the Nueva Canción Chilena (New Chilean Song) movement which led to a revolution in the popular music of his country under the Salvador Allende government. Shortly after the Chilean coup of 11 September 1973, he was arrested, tortured and ultimately shot to death with 44 bullet shots by machine gun fire. His body was later thrown out into the street of a shanty town in Santiago. The contrast between the themes of his songs, on love, peace and social justice and the brutal way in which he was murdered transformed Jara into a symbol of struggle for human rights and justice across Latin America.

Augusto Boal (April 16, 1931 - May 2, 2009) - PART 1
Augusto Boal (April 16, 1931 - May 2, 2009) After spending the past 2 weeks re-reading his books- i didn't expect to be putting up an obituary instead of a vlog. I found out today that he died on Saturday. I'd been tagged by KazukiSeirei a couple of weeks ago for another 5 facts tag, and i offered to vlog on something that really inspires me instead. This is the man I intended to vlog on. His work is truly inspirational to me, and I think, so very useful for the times we live in. I studied the theatre forms of Augusto Boal for 2 years- doing practical street theatre, invisible theatre, community drama, Theatre in Conflict Resolution and other dramatherapy. I wanted to vlog about him and in particular, Invisible Theatre and how it works to empower people and create real social and political change. I've had a load of little synchronicites that kept pointing me back to his work in the past month, & learned i had missed a workshop he himself held here in London just 4 weeks ago... so it's a bit strange to hear he's died after I had been geeking out on his life's work when i hadn't looked at it in 10 years! I'll vlog more personally on him next week maybe- somehow not in the mood right now :-( **************** AN EXAMPLE OF INVISIBLE THEATRE- write up of what was planned and what transpired,, on the topic of "Manufacturing Fear" that took place in New York. quebec.indymedia.org ***************** www.democracynow.org uprisingradio.org Legendary Brazilian theater director <b>...</b>

The Manganiyar seduction by roysten abel. New promo
Is it theater? Is it music? Is it an Installation? Is this contemporary? Or is it Traditional? Is it a combination of all these? Please do not try to attach any of these tags to this creation born out of the union between contemporary theater director Roysten Abel and the traditional Manganiyar musicians. The concept creates a dazzling union between the Manganiyars music and the visual seduction of Amsterdams red light district. The intellect is put to rest for more than hour thereby allowing the soul a full experience of intoxication. It is a magic box of 43 musicians who are seated in 36 red-curtained cubicles arranged in four horizontal rows one on top of the other. The show starts with a single cubicle lighting up to reveal the first performer, soon another cubicle lights up and then another thus creating a dramatic and musical roller coaster which take us into a world which is beyond the known. The Normal practise is to take and use music for theatre but here the process is reversed and theatre is used to create magic in music.
